Places to see in ( Turin - Italy ) Piazza Carignano

Places to see in ( Turin - Italy ) Piazza Carignano

Piazza Carignano is one of the historic squares of the city of Turin .
Next to Piazza Castello , it is bounded by the Accademia delle Scienze streets, Cesare Battisti and Principe Amedeo. It is completely surrounded by remarkable Baroque architecture, among which stands out the imposing bulk of Palazzo Carignano , one of the major symbols of the Italian Risorgimento . Opposite the latter are the Teatro Carignano and some important local citizens such as the famous Ristorante del Cambio and the historic Gelateria Pepino . Orna the center of the square a statue dedicated to Vincenzo Gioberti .

The dimensions (about 88x33 meters), the monumentality of the curvilinear facade of Palazzo Carignano and the nearby presence of prestigious institutions in Via dell'Accademia delle Scienze, such as the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities , make the square one of the richest corners of artistic influences , historical and monumental of the historical center of Turin. The pedestrianization has made even more appreciable the atmosphere gathered in the square.

The square was opened during the expansion of the city of Turin provided by the Duke Vittorio Amedeo I of Savoy : the elegant palace, intended for Prince Emanuele Filiberto di Carignano the Mute was erected starting from 1679 on what had been the stables of the prince Tommaso Francesco di Savoia . The project, entrusted to Guarino Guarini, provided, on the side facing the Po , an elegant garden and, on the square, the famous sinuous façade, pearl of Baroque architecture. The works continued until 1685 , making this palace one of the most important buildings in Turin.

Later, when the Savoy of Carignano inherited the subalpine throne, the palace and the homonymous square became scenarios of those events that would have made the history of a united Italy. As recalled by the monumental inscription on the top of the building, QVI NACQVE VITTORIO EMANVELE II and the statute Albertino was announced by the sumptuous balcony . Inside the palace, the first Parliament of united Italy was set up.

Opposite Palazzo Carignano, there is the theater that takes its name from the square. The Carignano Theater stands in place of what was once the tennis hall of the city of Turin (called the Red Trincotto ). It was Vittorio Amedeo I of Savoy-Carignano who, in 1709 , had the boxes set up to transform the hall into a theater, which was then opened to the public during the 1711 carnival . In the course of history many authors performed here, from Carlo Goldoni to Vittorio Alfieri .

Adjacent to the theater is the famous Il Cambio restaurant . Already existent in the eighteenth century, the Cambio owes its fame to the illustrious people who used to have lunch: among them, Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour and Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy . In 1859 the monument dedicated to Vincenzo Gioberti was inaugurated , a work by the Valsesian Giovanni Albertoni .

Places to see in ( Turin - Italy ) Palazzo Carignano - Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento

Places to see in ( Turin - Italy ) Palazzo Carignano - Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento

The National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento (Museo nazionale del Risorgimento italiano) is the first, the biggest and the most important among the 23 museums in Italy dedicated to the Risorgimento, the only one which can be considered National according to a 1901 law and due to its rich and great collections. It is housed in the Palazzo Carignano in Turin.

The museum was established in 1878, shortly after Italian unification, even though it only had its first permanent exhibition in 1908. Originally located in the Mole Antonelliana, in 1938 it was moved to its current site (which had previously housed the Subalpine Chamber of Deputies, from 1848 to 1860, and then the first Italian Chamber of Deputies, from 1861 to 1865).

Its exhibits include weapons, flags, uniforms, printed and written documents (including the original manuscript of the song Il Canto degli Italiani, dated November 10, 1847 by Goffredo Mameli, now Italian national anthem since 1946), and artworks. The new exhibition, opened on March 18, 2011, occupies about 3500 square metres across 30 rooms, and covers the real Risorgimento period, stretching from the late 18th century revolutions to the beginning of the First World War. It includes a specialized library, a prints cabinet and a documentary archive.

Top Things to Do in Turin - Piazza Castello - A Guided Tour

Piazza Castello, the central square that contains all the history of the city, from its Roman foundation to the memorial stone reminding us of a Turinese resident deported to Auschwitz (161 Piazza Castello). At the centre of the square is the Castello degli Acaja (Castle of the Acaja) (13th -15th century) which is transformed into Palazzo Madama (Lady Palace) (17th – 18th century), the ancient residence of the Royal Ladies which then became the seat of the Senate of the Kingdom of Italy (Turin was the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1864). You can also find the Real Chiesa di San Lorenzo (Royal Church of Saint Lawrence), a baroque masterpiece by Guarino Guarini dated 1679, whose interior will leave you speechless.

Parco del Valentino is a popular public park in Turin, Italy. It is located along the west bank of the Po river. It covers an area of 500,000m², which makes it Turin's second largest park. (Turin's largest park, the 840,000m² Pellerina Park, is Italy's most extended urban green area).
