Amphitheatre of Capua . Italy

The Amphitheatre (italian: Anfiteatro Campano) of the ancient city of Capua is located in the modern city of Santa Maria Capua Vetere. It's the second largest after the Colosseum in Rome and maybe the first amphitheatre built by the Romans. Nearby was the gladiator school made famous by the revolt of Spartacus.

Ancient Capua, Italy #shorts #travel #tourism

Ancient Capua, or more precisely, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, is home to the second largest amphitheater in Roman times. It was near here, prior to its existence, that the Spartacus slave revolt began. It's also a relatively empty tourist attraction. The crowds found at the Colosseum aren't seen here.

Amphitheatre of Capua, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Caserta, Campania, Italy, Europe

The Amphitheatre of Capua was a Roman amphitheatre in the city of Capua, second only to the Colosseum in size and probably the model for it. It may have been the first amphitheatre to be built by the Romans. and was the location of the first and most famous gladiator school. The amphitheatre was the location of the outbreak of the revolt of Spartacus in 73 BC, which threatened the city of Rome for two years in the period immediately preceding the First Triumvirate. Today its remains are found in the comune of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, on Piazza I Ottobre. Much of the stone from the amphitheatre was reused by the Capuans in the Norman period in order to build the Castello delle Pietre. Some of the ornamental busts which were originally used as keystones for the arches of the amphitheatre are found today in the facade of the Palazzo del comune of Capua. Since December 2014, the museum, amphitheatre and mithraeum have been under the control of the state museum of Campania.

Gladiator Museum, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Caserta, Campania, Italy, Europe

The Museo dei Gladiatori stands near the Campano Amphitheater in Santa Maria Capua Vetere. In the museum, the surviving elements of the decoration of the Campanian Amphitheater were presented to the public for the first time. It was inaugurated in 2003 and is divided into three rooms. In the first room, placed at the entrance, various inscriptions have been placed bearing dedications to the emperors Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, a model that reproduces the original structure of the Amphitheater and, at the top right, there are three of the arch keys that decorated the exterior of the monument: a male head with a Phrygian cap identified with Mitra or Attis, a female with a diadem (perhaps Giunone), a head of Minerva with an attic helmet and the cast of the Volturno, whose original is kept in the Museo Campano of Capua. In the second room, with an original layout that reproposes the steps of the auditorium, the decoration of one of the vomitoria (accesses to the cavea) was reconstructed in its entirety; on the bottom there is a relief with a procession of magistrates and lictors, depicted in the act of entering the amphitheater to occupy their seats. The side balustrades instead reproduce felines that bite the prey; other fragments of lateral balustrades depict animals that seem to run towards the arena: gazelles, bears, elephants, lions. Fragments of the frontal plutei are also placed on the walls of the same room. Among the represented themes stand out sacrifice scenes, a depiction of the amphitheater under construction and mythological scenes; in particular we note, on the right wall, the exploits of Hercules (cleaning the Augean, Hercules and Antaeus stables) and two fragments with the Dioscuri. To the right of the entrance is the punishment of Prometheus, the torture of Marsyas, Mars and Rhea Silvia, as well as a fragment with dancing Maenads and another with Apollo. To the left of the entrance one can also recognize a scene with towered deities, the construction of the amphitheater, the representation of a sacred enclosure, a scene of sacrifice for the dedication of the amphitheater. On the left wall, scenes of Centauromachy and Actaeon torn apart by dogs. The stylistic features of the reliefs, the choice of subjects and the way of treating them in response to a strongly classical taste indicate the Hadrian age as a period of execution of the sculptures. In the third room, to the left of the first, there is a mechanical representation of a gladiatorial fight.

In this video I'm in Naples, in Italy's stunning Campania region. I delve into this beautiful, chaotic city to discover what makes up the unique Neapolitan culture. I also go on a delicious street food tour to try Naples's famous fried food and get to know some of the friendly locals. Naples is an ancient city with a rich history which has resulted in a very unique culture, and in my opinion it's one of Italy’s most authentic cities!

The Castle of Ettore Fieramosca in Capua, Italy (Castello e. Fieramosca)

Following the crisis of the Empire, the arrival of the Lombards and the foundation of the Duchy of Benevento , under King Arechi, gave way to a new military administration based on the fortification of the territory divided into 34 different counties (including Mignano) .

Picture Gallery:

Around the eighth century with the materials removed from the Vicus (local stone such as yellow tuff and limestone) was built, on a watershed protected by natural defenses, the Castle of Mignano which will always be considered a fiefdom of great prestige, as well as structure defense and refuge for the rural population.

The first written tests of the existence of the Castle date back to 1034 and its first real count was Landolfo Fusco . In 1134 the castle was confiscated by Roger II of Altavilla , who used it, given its strategic position, as a safe place to organize the rebellion against the Monastery of Montecassino . Mignano, therefore, as well as Galluccio were the scene of the war between the king and Pope Innocent until the latter was taken prisoner in the castle. After the Peace of Mignano of 1139, the lord of the feud and of the Castle of Mignano was the soldier Malgerio Sorello .

Furthermore, the location of the Castle on the Via Appia Traiana meant that it was chosen as a place for a stop by the King of France, Philip II Augustus , returning from the III Crusade.
In 1201 the fief of Mignano , came under the Kingdom of Sicily , ruled by Pope Innocent III guardian of Frederick II of Swabia, until the latter, declaring an adult at only 14 years, began his fight against the papacy.

The Pope forced Federico, under penalty of excommunication to undertake a new crusade in the Holy Land and during his absence, in 1229, he returned the fief of Mignano to the heirs of Sorello . A few years later, King Carlo D'angiò left the Castello di Mignano to defeat Manfredi in the famous Battle of Benevento .

From 1373 on the other hand the fiefdom passed to the Baroness Andreina Acciamoli countess D'Altovilla, famous for her beauty to such an extent that Giovanni Boccaccio dedicated the De Mulieribus Claris to her.

ETTORE FIERAMOSCA
Among the great and noble families who owned the Castle of Mignano , we give much value to the Fieramosca , men of arms of Capua; Rossetto Ferramosca is the first to give luster to the family, then he is succeeded by Rinaldo and finally, at his death in the siege of Gaeta, his sons.
In particular, the castle of Mignanobequeaths to Ettore, who in 1501 bravely fights against the French troops that had occupied Mignano Ettore, a skilled leader who leads the Italian knights who support the Spanish army, but unfortunately, during a battle in Puglia, he is captured by a squad of Frenchmen led by the Mounsier de la Motte. In February 1503 a collective duel is organized from which the valiant cavalier Fieramosca comes out winning forcing the opponent to surrender.

MODERN HISTORY
During the Second World War , Mignano Monte Lungo was severely hit by German bombing and Castello itself was not spared, suffering serious structural damage and becoming a place of refuge for the Mignano population. In 1956 the structure, with adjoining valley and five hectares of neighboring land, were purchased by the Bishop of Teano, Mons. Francesco Simeone, and donated to the parish church of Santa Maria Grande. His and his enthusiasm, with the support of numerous volunteers, allowed the damage inflicted by the war to be repaired. Following the death of Mgr. Simeone, the Castle ended up abandoned and suffered the damage due to the improper use of the rooms over the years, remaining the property of the Episcopal Curia of Teano-Calvi.

THE CASTLE TODAY
In 2009 the structure was given back to the population of Mignano Monte Lungo thanks to its acquisition by the Municipality. Today we can admire it in all its glory thanks to the restoration carried out under the high surveillance of the Superintendency of Fine Arts and Landscape for the Provinces of Caserta and Benevento.

The work was possible thanks to a € 8,041,650.00 loan included in the project restoration work on the Ettore Fieramosca castle , presented by the Municipality of Mignano Monte Lungo in 2011 for admission to the resources of POR Campania FESR 2007 / 2013.
