The origins of Castelnuovo di Porto can be traced back to the history of the ancient city-state of Capena, capital of the Capenati, a flourishing Italic population that thrived north-west of the Tiber, before the advent of the Roman Empire.
Autochthonous culture underwent external contamination over time, above all by the Etruscans, the Latins and the Sabines. They spoke a language related to Faliscan.
The Capenate territory (Ager Capenas) extended along the right bank of the Tiber, bordering to the north with the Falisci, to the east with the Tiber and the Sabines, while to the southwest with the Etruscans of Veio.
Little is known about the Roman era. The origins are also unknown, perhaps......................................................................................................................................................

The Circus Maximus (Circo Massimo) is an ancient Roman chariot-racing stadium and mass entertainment venue in Rome. In the valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills, it was the first and largest stadium in ancient Rome and its later Empire. It measured 621 m (2,037 ft) in length and 118 m (387 ft) in width and could accommodate over 150,000 spectators.

Places to see in ( Rome - Italy ) Case Romane del Celio

Places to see in ( Rome - Italy ) Case Romane del Celio

Case Romane del Celio is a Roman underground site where you can see 2nd and 3rd century Roman houses in which Christians worshipped, and several well-preserved frescoes. It is located under the church of Saints Giovanni and Paolo. It is probably easiest to get to by walking northeast (past the short edge of the Circus Maximus) from the Circo Massimo metro stop until you see a small pink building on the right, diagonally across the intersection once you've reached the end of that short edge of the Circus Maximus. By the way, this is a good opportunity to see the Circus Maximus, the Frangipane Tower and the Piazza di Porta Capena. Anyhow, once you see that small pink building at the east corner of Via di San Gregorio and Vid dei Cerchi, walk on the tiny Salita di San Gregorio which winds behind that building and takes a curve to the right, becoming Clivo di Scauro. After that curve, the second building on your left is the Basilica of Saints Giovanni and Paolo; look for the marked doorway which I recall being a few steps below street level. Alternately, you can walk across Via di San Gregorio from the entrance/exit of the Palatine Hill and walk up a short but steep embankment to get to Viale di Parco del Celio, which you should cross and continue on a few steps to that curve in Clivo di Scauro.

John and Paul (not the Apostles, and not the Beatles, but the guys the church was named after) lived in what are now the underground houses, which had been combined into an elegant pagan house during the 3rd century before they lived there. They were officers at the court of emperor Constantine (312 - 337 AD) who made Christianity legal in Rome. 24 years later, emperor Julian the Apostate (361 -363 AD) attempted to revert Rome back to paganism, and had John and Paul beheaded on the night of January 26th-27th, 361 AD after they refused to serve in a military campaign. They were buried on the site of their houses (which was illegal since this was within the city walls). A church was built over the houses in the 4th century shortly after their deaths, and remains of it can be seen in the present church which was built during the Middle Ages. The houses and their rich decorations were discovered under the church in 1887.

According to reviews, a residence from the 2nd century AD, a single home of a wealthy family, and a 3rd-century-AD apartment building for artisans are all preserved in this site, but I must admit that the signage is poor enough (or my addled brain is old enough) that I had no idea when I visited the site that this was the case. But the well-preserved frescoes are easy to see, even if they're not identified at the site, and they made the trip worthwhile. Those frescoes range from the 3rd to the 12th centuries. The most famous one is the 5th photo below, which is about 9 feet tall by 15 feet wide, and probably dates to the mid to late 3rd century AD. The subject of the painting might be Proserpina returning from the Underworld at the beginning of Spring, resting on a small island with her mother Ceres and her brother Bacchus. Or it might be Venus in her role as protectress of sailors.

There is also a small museum (antiquarium) which houses many artifacts found during the excavation. If you get the idea that I think the site needs to be improved, explaining what you're looking at better, you're absolutely right. I think it's inexcusable to not use the money this site is collecting from all its tourists to invest in a few signs that explain what people are seeing. In 10 languages. It's practically free, for cryin' out loud. Get with it. Owners, go look at the underground at the nearly-free San Nicola in Carcere where the signs are not superb, but at least there's something.

( Rome - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Rome . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Rome - Italy

Porta San Sebastiano, originally known as the Porta Appia. The gate sat astride the Appian Way, the regina viarum (queen of the roads), which originated at the Porta Capena in the Servian Wall. The present name is attested only since the second half of 15th century, due to the vicinity to the Basilica of San Sebastiano and its catacombs.

Around Rome on a Scooter—Via Appia, Garbatella, and More...

How about a tour around Rome on a Vespa?

In this video our Vespa man Valerio is taking us on a tour of Rome starting at his office in Campo de' Fiori and ending in his neighborhood, Garbatella.

To see my other Vespa video click here:

On our way we passed by the famous Roscioli bakery and San't Andrea della Valle church to turn into Via Vittorio Emanuele. We cut right to the Senate of Italy before making a turn and crossing the Piazza Sant' Eustachio with its famous coffee shop (

Valerio then rode right behind the Pantheon and crossed the Piazza della Minerva with its famous elephant to get to the Piazza del Collegio Romano and passing under one of those picturesque passetti.

We then headed for Via Del Corso passing Piazza S. Ignazio, and Palazzo Chigi on Piazza Colonna. Valerio swung left towards Piazza del Popolo and then immediate right into Via del Tritone. On our way to Monti we passed by the Fontana di Trevi and Quirinale.

Right before we swung towards the Colosseum ( Valerio pointed to the corner where Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise was filmed.

We went around the Colosseum ( and passed the Circo Massimo on our way to Terme di Caracalla. BTW, did you know that the Terme di Caracalla had a significant impact on some pretty notable architecture in the US?

From there the road took us through the Porta of San Sebastiano, along Via Appia (the Appian Way), the first major road ever built that still has some of the original cobblestones in place.

Finally, we arrived to Garbatella, where Valerio showed us around and shared some personal stories.

In this channel we film from the point of view of the observer what surrounds us while we walk or ride a bicycle.
The kind of film we make can be defined as Slow TV, i.e. filming ordinary events (such as a walk) for their entire duration, with original audio and without editing (except for unforeseen circumstances or technical reasons).
We decided to use this mode of shooting because we believe that in this way we can show (in addition to the places) a small slice of reality. This seems more interesting to us than showing the usual glossy films.

Hello dear Friends, welcome to MOPEG????.

In this virtual tour we walked along the streets of the Rione Celio and the Appio-Latino district.
We started the tour from the Arch of Drusus and from there we headed to the Viale delle Mura Latine passing through the beautiful Porta San Sebastiano.
After a walk in the hot sun these days along the Mura Latine we headed toward Piazza Epiro.
Once there we passed through the market of Piazza Epiro and headed in the direction of the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano crossing some residential streets in the area.
We ended the tour at Via Sannio, just before the market dedicated to clothing located on that street.
