Vigan City Ilocos Sur - The Most Preserved Heritage Town in the Philippines | Walking Tour | 4K HDR

Go back in time with the Heritage Village of Vigan City, Ilocos Sur!

Vigan City was founded in 1572 by the Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo, a grandson of Miguel López de Legazpi, who was the first Governor-General of the Spanish East Indies. Salcedo established the settlement along the banks of the Govantes River and named it Villa Fernandina in honor of King Ferdinand II of Spain.

Under Spanish rule, Vigan City flourished as a center of trade and commerce. It became a vital link in the galleon trade route, connecting Manila, the capital of the Spanish Philippines, to the port of Acapulco in Mexico. The city became a melting pot of various cultures and attracted merchants from China, Spain, Mexico, and other parts of Asia.

The most commonly known source of the city's name is the Biga'a plant, which once grew abundantly along the banks of the Mestizo River, from which Captain Juan de Salcedo derived the city's name (after a misunderstanding with the locals, thinking he was asking the name of the plants).

In 1999, Vigan City was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture. The UNESCO recognition highlighted the city's exceptional value and the need to protect and preserve its cultural heritage for future generations.

Candon walking tour in Ilocos Sur | A morning rainy walk tour of Candon City Ilocos Sur

In this video, I stroll through the streets of Candon, Ilocos Sur, showcasing the historic city's distinct charm and beauty. Candon has earned the moniker Tobacco Capital of the Philippines as one of the Philippines' most significant producers of Virginia-type tobacco. The many landmarks and monuments throughout the area reflect the city's rich history and culture. I highlight some of the city's most exciting features as I walk through the streets, such as the world's largest and heaviest kalamay, a sweet and sticky snack made from sticky rice, coconut milk, and sugar. The city's history is as intriguing as its present. The city is named after the legendary kandong tree, which is no longer found in the area but is essential in the city's mythology. On June 12th, the city's patron saint, John of Sahagun, has a feast. Candon Ilocos Sur is a city that has something for everyone, whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking for a new and exciting place to visit. Join me as I walk through the streets of Candon, discovering the rich culture and history of the Philippines' Tobacco Capital.

I now have more stuff to create and a valid excuse to travel while still being healthy, thanks to walking. It also allowed me to see many of the Philippines' beautiful locations, cafes, restaurants, and tourist attractions. To support this channel, it would be good if you could buy me a cup of coffee after each walk or trip I do. I love to have coffee after a long walk.

ILOCOS SUR PHILIPPINES | The Most Beautiful Heritage Province in the Philippines - Ep 1

Thank you for watching :)

Watch Episode 2:

I’ve started making a room for a set of discoveries around the province. Ilocos Sur (from ilocano word: Makin-abagatan nga Ilocos) is an heritage province in the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region in Luzon. Ilocos Sur is bordered by Ilocos Norte and Abra to the north, Mountain Province to the east, La Union and Benguet to the south and the West Philippines Sea to the west.

Ilocos Sur was founded by the Spanish conquistador, Juan de Salcedo in 1572. Ilocos Sur has a lot to offer not only with tourist attractions, but also in terms of products and delicacies. Its capital, Vigan City, was in fact included as one of the New 7 Wonders Cities of the World together with Doha, Qatar, Havana, Cuba, Durban, South Africa, Beirut, Lebanon, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and La Paz, Bolivia. Vigan was also listed by UNESCO as the best preserved example of Spanish colonial towns in Asia, because of it’s Popular Calle Crisologo a.k.a. Vigan Heritage Village. The climate is generally dry with drier months usually from October to May, so it’s the best time to visit.

As a province rich with history, many of the accommodations you’ll find in Ilocos Sur also have their own colorful stories to tell. Whether it’s at the heart of a historic city or near its hidden beaches, Ilocos Sur has options for all types of travellers!
