Camaiore is a city and comune of 32,513 inhabitants within the province of Lucca, Tuscany, central-western Italy. It stretches from the Apuan Alps to the east, to the plains and the coast of Versilia to the west. Camaiore is the largest municipality in Versilia and its territory has many different environments. It extends from the beach in Lido di Camaiore, to the peaks of the Apuan Alps including the peaks of Monte Prana, Mount Matanna and Mount Gabberi and passes through both high and low hills. The plains of caezzanese are also important, as they are known for the cultivation of flowers and the general growth of foliage. In addition to the lido’s promenade, there are also rolling hills with small crops of vitis and olives.
Camaiore is rich in water, especially ground water, which is continuously extracted for private use including gardens and greenhouses as well as being used by some adjacent municipalities for the replenishment of local reservoirs. In the summer of 2007 strong earthquakes were felt that, according to some experts, were due to the excessive pumping of groundwater. Earlier, in the mid-nineties, chasms formed which caused extensive damage including the collapse of some houses. Small rivers can be found throughout the area, which are fed by drainage water from the mountains. One of the more important rivers is the Lombricese that runs at the foot of Mount Gabberi, touching the nearby towns of Lombrici and joining another river, the Lucese, which comes down from the pass of the same name, arriving in the valley through Nocchi Marignana (Camaiore) areas and the lower part of Pieve di Camaiore up to Camaiore. From here onwards, it joins with the Lombricese to form the Camaiore river down to its mouth which is called Fosso dell'Abate. Throughout the territory there are ponds and small lakes which are fed from various sources. The coast of Lido di Camaiore is bathed by the Ligurian sea, which extends from Liguria to the promontory of Piombino and not the Tyrrhenian Sea as many mistakenly believe.
Camaiore has Roman origins, as it was the site of one of the largest Roman encampments near the city of Lucca and an important station along the Via Cassia. From this we find the origins of the name Campus Maior (Campo Maggiore). In the Middle Ages, the town grew considerably thanks to the old Francigena, which follows northwest from Lucca, towards the Lunigiana and Passo della Cisa, and on to 'Campo Maggiore’. The city represented the Twenty-seventh stage during the journey of Sigerico Canterbury, and was called Campmaior by the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1226, the Luccans destroyed the remote hill fortress of Montecastrese, situated above Camaiore on the slopes of Mount Prana, and the survivors of this battle migrated down to the valley in Camaiore as it offered more protection against future city-state attacks

Lido di Camaiore una delle migliori destinazioni estive in Toscana
Una lunga lingua di sabbia dorata e un mare limpido: Lido di Camaiore è una località balneare molto amata dai turisti, l'ideale per una vacanza glamour.
Il litorale toscano è un vero tripudio di spiagge bellissime, mare limpido e località vivaci, dove trascorrere le vacanze estive. Una delle mete più amate dai turisti è Lido di Camaiore, incastonato tra spiagge forse più rinomate e glamour, con le quali tuttavia condivide un fascino unico al mondo. Si trova a pochi chilometri di distanza dal paese, ed è la destinazione perfetta per chi cerca relax e divertimento. Andiamo alla sua scoperta.
Lido di Camaiore, una spiaggia meravigliosa.
Nessun centro storico, solo qualche casa e dei negozietti per supplire alle esigenze dei turisti: Lido di Camaiore, pur essendo frazione di un paese che conta oltre 30mila abitanti, non ha altro che la sua splendida spiaggia e un lungomare dove passeggiare, ammirando il sole che si riflette sull’acqua. Siamo nel cuore della Versilia, una delle località più chic dove recarsi in estate, molto apprezzata anche dai vip. È letteralmente incastonata tra spiagge famosissime, come quella di Forte dei Marmi e quella di Viareggio, e si trova a due passi dalla Liguria.
La lunga lingua di sabbia dorata che caratterizza la spiaggia di Lido di Camaiore, ancora una volta premiata con la Bandiera Blu, è interamente attrezzata, e ci sono tantissimi stabilimenti balneari tra cui scegliere. Di sicuro potrete trovare quello che più fa al caso vostro, visti i numerosi – e variegati – servizi offerti ai turisti. Si va dalla presenza di tende sulla sabbia, che sostituiscono i più classici ombrelloni, alle lezioni di pilates o di zumba da seguire in riva al mare, passando persino per alcune piscine d’acqua dolce per chi non ama avere la pelle ricoperta di sale che si secca al sole.
Se invece preferite risparmiare qualcosa, potreste provare ad aggiudicarvi uno spazietto presso le due sole spiagge libere dell’intero litorale, che sono tuttavia sempre molto affollate. Perché trascorrere le vacanze a Lido di Camaiore? Il mare è incantevole e ci sono tantissime occasioni per divertirsi, in famiglia o con gli amici. Senza parlare poi del clima, che è piacevolmente temperato anche in piena estate – a meno che non rimaniate a rosolarvi tutto il giorno sotto il sole. E poi, nonostante questa località sia incentrata completamente sulla spiaggia, ci sono alcune piccole sorprese che vi conquisteranno.
Cosa vedere e cosa fare a Lido di Camaiore.
Proprio a ridosso della spiaggia, c’è un lungomare davvero meraviglioso: si tratta di viale Ermenegildo Pistelli, che offre una camminata di un paio di chilometri con vista sulle acque pulite, che rifulgono sotto i raggi del sole. Se da un lato c’è il mare ad incantare i turisti, dall’altro potrete ammirare hotel in stile liberty, negozi ed eleganti ville del ‘900. Se amate invece andare in bici, proprio accanto al viale passa la Ciclovia della Versilia, un itinerario che vi porterà alla scoperta di paesaggi magnifici – con un po’ di fortuna, nelle giornate più terse lo sguardo si spinge sino alle Alpi Apuane.
Per vivere un’esperienza adrenalinica, in estate potete provare la ruota panoramica: installata al termine del lungomare, nella zona più a nord di Lido di Camaiore, è il punto d’osservazione ideale per godere di una vista mozzafiato che arriva addirittura alla costa ligure. Al tramonto, non c’è niente di più romantico che salire in cima alla ruota e veder scendere il sole. Infine, un’ultima tappa da non perdere è il famoso pontile, costruito solamente in anni recenti e divenuto il simbolo di Lido di Camaiore. Si spinge in mare per circa 200 metri e ha un bar-ristorante, oltre ad una terrazza panoramica.
