Calexico, California | What is it like to live there?
Driving through and exploring the border town of Calexico. This town is located in southern Imperial County, California. Situated on the Mexican border, it is linked economically with the much larger city of Mexicali, the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California. It is about 122 miles east of San Diego and 62 miles west of Yuma, Arizona.
Calexico, along with six other incorporated Imperial County cities, forms part of the larger populated area known as the Imperial Valley.
The name of the city is a portmanteau of California and Mexico. The originally proposed names were Santo Tomas or Thomasville. Mexicali is a similarly named city directly across the international border from Calexico, its name being a portmanteau of the words Mexico and California.

Imperial Valley California | El Centro
El Centro in Spanish means The Center. El Centro was founded in 1906 by Holt and Barker who purchased the land on which the city was built. Initially, El Centro was a part of San Diego County.
El Centro is the largest American city to lie entirely below sea level. At an average of 50 feet below sea level, it is one of the lowest elevations in the continental United States. The area allows water from the Colorado River to flow there by gravity. Many farmers settled in the area when the water from the Colorado River was diverted via canals to irrigate the desert valley.
The nearby Algodones Dunes, the largest dune field in the US, draws thousands of visitors each year, mainly for off-road driving. The Salton Sea lies 30 miles (48 km) north of El Centro, but water sports enthusiasts head to the Colorado River, 50 miles (80 km) to the east near Yuma, Arizona
Mexico (the border city of Mexicali, Baja California) is 10 miles (16 km) away, which offers big city amenities like museums, a zoo and a sports/convention center.
El Centro Imperial Valley California has a desert climate and is the southernmost desert city below sea level in the continental United States.

Never skip Calexico, California
Calexico is located by the Mexican border about 60 miles West of Yuma, AZ. The town started as a tent camp until it was founded in 1899. Juan Bautista de Anza, the Spanish explorer, passed the area around 1776.
The town looks like a typical border town with lower older buildings. Calexico has a small downtown area with stores selling mostly Mexican products. The border fence has so much barbed razor wire that it looks like a super max prison. The City Hall and Hotel de Anza are two prominent buildings in town. The weather is normally very nice and the summers can be very hot. The area between Calexico and Salton Sea is pretty much an agricultural area.
About 30 miles North you will find Calipatria. The town is the lowest city in the Western Hemisphere 184ft below Sea Level. Right next to the Town Hall is the famous 184-foot flag pole. Calipatria was founded in the early 1900s.
If you continue to drive North another ten miles you will be in the little town called Niland. Slab City is located just a few miles East.

This is an update from my previous video driving to Baja, Mexico through the Calexico-Mexicali West Border Crossing. Mexico Federal Hwy. 5 is the main artery to get Baja, particularly towards the east or Sea of Cortez side of Baja. For those who have not done this drive, connecting to Hwy. 5 after crossing the Calexico-Mexicali West Border crossing can be an adventure by itself particularly those driving around Mexicali solely relying on GPS.
This video will show my preferred route to connect to Hwy. 5 after crossing the Calexico-Mexicali West Border Crossing, including helpful landmarks to look for. It starts by staying at the Calz. de los Presidentes after getting out of the border crossing facility. At the 2nd traffic light on Calz. de los Presidentes, turn left to Calz. James W Stone. At the first traffic light at Calz. James W Stone, turn right to Blvd. Lopez Mateos. Stay on Blvd. Lopez Mateos until the reach the monument of Sanchez Taboada where the street splits to Hwy. 5 and Hwy. 2. For those heading to Baja, make sure to turn to Hwy.5 --- it can get tricky here at times because this can be a busy intersection.

When returning to US from Baja, Mexico through West Mexicali-Calexico border crossing, I stopped relying on GPS around Mexicali after some incidents where the GPS led me to areas in Mexicali that maybe I shouldn't be.
This video was recorded in July 2022 and shows my current preferred route through Mexicali to the
West Mexicali-Calexico Border Sentri Lanes, navigating using landmarks instead of relying on the GPS.
My current preferred route coming from south of Mexicali is to stay northbound on Hwy 5 through Mexicali, which becomes Lopez Mateos Blvd, then left turn at James W Stone, then right turn at de los Presidentes. Note that you need to have a Sentri Pass or Global Entry card to be able to use the Sentri Lanes.

Mexicali East Crossing Northbound Explained (2023)
Mexicali East is a great crossing location for travel by car between the US and Mexico. However, it's confusing going northbound (as is common on the border.) This video shows how to get to the regular lane (the SENTRI and Ready Lanes are pretty easy to get to.) This is in early 2023, so it may change at any time!

This is also known as Calexico East because Calexico is the city on the north side of the border and Mexicali is the city in Mexico.

Driving back to the USA using the Calexico-Mexicali East Border Crossing - April 2023
There are 2 US-Mexico border crossings between Calexico and Mexicali. They’re referred to as the East Border Crossing and the West Border Crossing.
This video shows my preferred route driving from Hwy. 5 to the Calexico-Mexicali East Border Crossing. As I have noted in my previous videos, I stopped relying solely on GPS when driving around Mexicali after some misadventures. Instead, I use landmarks that I noted in this video, and use GPS only as a supplemental navigation tool.
This route goes this way:
*From south Baja along Federal Hwy. 5 driving northbound, right turn to Calz. Manuel Gomez Morin.
*Stay along Calz. Manuel Morin and before the 7th traffic light, right turn Calz. Cetys.
*Continue on Calz. Cetys and at the 4th traffic light, turn left to Calz. Abelardo Rodriguez.
*Continue on Calz. Abelardo Rodriguez until you see the various border crossing entrances.
I prefer this route because it stays along major city streets.
