Puerto Varas, also known as La ciudad de las rosas or “the city of roses”, is a city located in the southern Chilean province of Llanquihue, in the Los Lagos Region.
Puerto Varas is famous for its German traditions and architecture from Germany, its natural environment, and its popularity as a tourist destination close to mountains, lakes, forests and national parks. It is located 20 kms from the city of Puerto Montt on the shore of Llanquihue Lake, the second largest lake in Chile and the Osorno and Calbuco Volcanoes. Puerto Varas is also close to town like Frutillar, Llanquihue and Puerto Octay.
The city was founded by German immigrants who settled the shores of Lake Llanquihue in 1853.

Calbuco Volcano eruption in 2015 & exploring Chiloé Island in Chile
???? April, 2015 ▶️ I left the El Chaltén Area of Argentina and crossed into Chile towards Puerto Natales. From there, a three day cruise through the Westfjords of Chile on the Navimag took me to Puerto Montt. I decided to take a trip to Chiloé, just hours before Volcan Calbuco erupted in a spectacular manner. Leaving Chiloé towards Puerto Varas again, I got the first close up views of the still erupting Calbuco Volcano. It also happens to be that the friend of my Couchsurfing host from Frutillar has been escaping the initial eruption near the summit, surviving and becoming a national interest in the TV. Once the border reopened again, I started to hitch hike towards Puyehue and eventually crossed the border to Argentina. [Fun fact: In this video, you can see the longest ever recorded hair length of mine ????]

Calbuco eruption, about 10 minutes in.
This is footage I took from outside the front of my house on April 22nd, its about 10 minutes into the eruption of volcano Calbuco in Chile. While zoomed in you can really see the billowing clouds of ash and other pyroclastic mater being ejected. (This later on ended up raining down on us as ash, sand and rocks, nearly half a foot thick blanketing everything in sight).

R3D resolution video for volcano chile travel !!!
Volcano Calbuco erupted on December 22, 2016, for the first time in four decades. Located close to the cities of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt in southern Chile. We (Jonas Dengler and Martin Heck) spend the prior couple of days on the neighboring volcano Osorno (~20km linear distance) shooting timelapses. After an amazing night under the nightsky we took the cable car downwards after a delay caused by repairs. Already late we headed south to catch the ferry on Routa 7 down to Patagonia. After 10min on the ferry we noticed a massive, almost nuclear looking cloud boiling upwards just were we left a few hours ago. Frenetically looking for a good outlook we then rushed to the only non-forested place to get a decent view of the show. We quickly put every bit of camera-equipment we could find on the constantly growing mushroom-cloud. We shot timelapses in 8K and 4K with a Pentax 645Z and Canon 6D. On the A7s we shot 4K video to the Shogun using Kingston HyperX SSDs. We filled almost all of our memory cards in the prior night so I had to do backups while shooting all this stuff.
This was for sure the most incredible show I've ever seen. I think this is a one in a lifetime event and I am so happy that we were able to capture it in all its glory.
