Bytom - a city with county rights in southern Poland, in the Silesian Voivodeship, in the Silesian Uplands, in the center of the Upper Silesian-Zagłębi metropolitan area.
After the war, a significant number of native inhabitants emigrated or were deported to Germany as part of the deportation of Germans (or those who were considered German), and men (especially miners) to the USSR. In turn, the Eastern Borderlands were filled with Poles resettled from areas incorporated into the USSR. The decades of the Polish People's Republic were characterized by a constant emphasis on the development of heavy industry, leading to the robbery of the mining industry. Today, the city is an important place on the cultural, entertainment and industrial map of the region.
According to CSO data as of December 31, 2020, Bytom was inhabited by 163,255 people. It is ranked as the 23rd largest city in Poland.

Bytom is one of the oldest cities in the Upper Silesia, and the former seat of the Piast dukes of the Duchy of Bytom. Until 1532, it was in the hands of the Piast dynasty, then it belonged to the Hohenzollern dynasty. After 1623 it was a state country in the hands of the Donnersmarck family. From 1742 to 1945 the town was within the borders of Prussia and Germany, and played an important role as an economic and administrative centre of the local industrial region. Until the outbreak of World War II, it was the main centre of national, social, cultural and publishing organisations fighting to preserve Polish identity in Upper Silesia. In the interbellum and during World War II, local Poles and Jews faced persecution by Germany.

Ulica Piekarska w Bytomiu – jedna z ulic w bytomskiej dzielnicy Śródmieście, wzdłuż której biegną tory tramwajowe. Biegnie od pl. Tadeusza Kościuszki, przez starą część Bytomia, do ul. Słonecznej i ul Kwiatowej.
W 1913 wzdłuż obecnej ul. Piekarskiej oddano do użytku linię tramwajową i zajezdnię (unieruchomiono ją w 1960). W 1979 zlikwidowano ruch tramwajowy wzdłuż ul. Piekarskiej, a przywrócono go 10 lutego 1982 (pod numerem 38, który kursuje do dziś).
Ulicą w części przebiega szlak turystyczny „Spacer po starym mieście w Bytomiu”. 15 listopada 2010 na pl. Tadeusza Kościuszki, pomiędzy ul. J. Jainty i ul. Piekarską oddano do użytku centrum handlowe Agora Bytom.

Bytom jest jednym z najstarszych miast Górnego Śląska, które posiada prawa powiatu. Swoją siedzibę ma tu m.in. Opera Śląska i Muzeum Górnośląskie. Bytom jest członkiem Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowskiej Metropolii Silesia, Związku Miast Polskich i Związku Powiatów Polskich. Położony jest w centrum Wyżyny Śląskiej, na Wyżynie Miechowickiej, części Płaskowyżu Bytomsko-Katowickiego. Wysokość miasta waha się między 249 m.n.p.m. w dolinie rzeki Bytomki do 346 m.n.p.m. w rejonie rezerwatu Segiet. Jego pierwotna lokalizacja została wybrana głównie ze względów obronnych, na naturalnym wzniesieniu – wzgórzu św. Małgorzaty. Rzeka Bytomka i podmokłe tereny były gwarancją bezpieczeństwa.
Historia Bytomia sięga XII wieku, ale to w 1254 roku dostał on prawa miejskie. Wtedy to Władysław, książę opolsko-raciborski, zezwolił na lokację miasta na prawie magdeburskim. Cztery lata później franciszkanie założyli tu swój klasztor oraz wznieśli kościół. Po śmierci Władysława obszar miasta został podzielony między jego czterech synów. W ten sposób powstało księstwo bytomskie. Jego pierwszym włodarzem został Kazimierz Bytomski. W 1355 roku wygasła linia Piastów na tym terenie. 14 lat później nastąpiło rozdrobnienie księstwa i podzielono znajdujący się tam zamek. W 1430 roku miasto zdobyli Husyci, którzy je spustoszyli. Następnie przeszło ono w ręce Habsburgów. W 1606 roku oddali je oni (w zamian za długi) Łazarzowi Henckel von Donnersmarck. W 1697 roku gród zyskał status Wolnego Państwa Stanowego. Rok 1742 przyniósł przyłączenie Bytomia do Królestwa Prus. XIX wiek stanowił dla miasta początek reformy administracyjnej i powołanie do życia licznych zakładów przemysłowych. W 1821 roku powstała huta cynku Klara, 17 lat później Rosamunda, w 1831 kopalnia rudy żelaza Magdalena, zaś po niej huta żelaza Pokój (1835 r.).
Zwiększyła się liczba ludności i Bytom w 1860 roku stał się najliczniejszym, pod względem mieszkańców, powiatem państwa pruskiego. Będąc pod jurysdykcją pruską, stał się on kolebką polskiego ruchu narodowego. Powstawało tu wiele wydawnictw, organizacji narodowych, politycznych czy kulturalnych. W 1895 roku, z inicjatywy Józefa Tucholskiego, założono w Bytomiu Towarzystwo Gimnastyczne „Sokół”. 10 lat później swoją działalność rozpoczął polski chór „Jedność”. W 1918 roku na obszarze Bytomia powstał podkomisariat Naczelnej Rady Ludowej. Następny rok przyniósł założenie w mieście Głównego Komitetu Wykonawczego Polskiej Organizacji Wojskowej Górnego Śląska. W tym samy czasie dokonano nieudanego ataku przez powstańców Jana Lortza na koszary Reichswery. Próbowano także przejąć wojskową centralę telefoniczną w hotelu Skrocha. Dnia 25 sierpnia 1920 roku podpisano w Bytomiu umowę kończącą II powstanie śląskie. Po plebiscycie z 20 marca 1921 roku większa część miasta i powiatu znalazła się w granicach Niemiec. W nocy z dnia 9 na 10 listopada miała tu miejsce tzw. Noc kryształowa, która przyniosła pogrom Żydów, bojkoty sklepów żydowskich i spalenie głównej synagogi. Po zakończeniu II wojny światowej (27.01.1945) Bytom zdobyła Armia Czerwona, która rozgrabiła część obiektów przemysłowych. 18 marca 1945 roku nastąpiło oficjalne przekazanie go polskiej administracji. W październiku wybrano Miejską Radę Narodową. W tym samym roku do miasta przybyli pierwsi Polacy z Kresów Wschodnich, po czym Bytom stał się jednym z większych polskich skupisk Kresowian. W 1991 roku powstał tu Śląski Teatr Tańca. Od 2007 roku miasto wchodzi w skład Górnośląskiego Związku Metropolitalnego.
Wśród ludzi związanych z Bytomiem można wyróżnić m.in.: Grzegorza Gerwazego Gorczyckiego (muzyk, kompozytor), Leszka Engelkinga (polski poeta, krytyk, literaturoznawca), Karin Stanek (polska piosenkarka), Annę Popek (prezenterka TV), Waldemara Legienia (judoka), Joannę Orleańską (polska aktorka), Mariusza Kałamagę (członek kabaretu Łowcy.B) czy Gosię Andrzejewicz (polska piosenkarka). Honorowymi obywatelami tego miasta są: Hubert Kowol (proboszcz parafii św. Barbary w latach 1965-2000), prof. dr hab. Jan Drabina (wykładowca Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, historyk, religioznawca), Wiesław Ochman (śpiewak operowy) i prof. zw. dr hab. n. med. dr h.c. Aleksander Sieroń (kierownik Oddziału Klinicznego Chorób Wewnętrznych, Angiologii i Medycyny Fizykalnej Katedry Chorób Wewnętrznych ŚUM).
