Must Stop Here For Famous Kadak Rotti, Enne Khara, Sappey Mutton! Hotel Nartaki Ranebennur Karnataka

I had heard much about this very special Ranebennur mutton preparation, the enne khara, translating literally to oil and chilli heat, drawing from its two principal ingredients. And so on our recent drive to Goa, we planned a lunch stop in this agricultural town in North Karnataka at Hotel Nartaki, the home of this iconic dish. Established 30 years ago by N Satish, a tailor turned restaurateur, in a tiny eatery that could only accommodate a few customers at a time. His wife would help him make the masala at home that he would cook into curries. Along the way, he came up with the concept of enne khaara largely to appease the spice-hungry tastebuds of the locals. The dish, in contrast to its fiery name, is a beautiful balance of flavours between the chilli heat (from a combination of 90% local Javannur chillies that also impart a striking colour to the dish, and 10% Guntur chillies) and the oil that rounds off all the sharp edges of the masala aided by the sourness of tomatoes. Mr N Satish has since passed on but the homemade tradition continues with his sons, Chetan and Chandan, in a much larger space today, aided by their mother and wives. If you love your meaty fare, Hotel Nartaki is certainly worth a visit, I would say even a detour should you be travelling in the area. I hope you enjoy this very special episode. Take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!

kuruvathi basaveshwara temple

Shri Kuruvathi Basaveshwara temple is an ancient historical temple located in Huvina Hadagali taluk, Bellary District, North Karnataka. Kuruvathi Basaveshwara temple is located on the bank of Tungabhadra river river and 10 km from Halavagalu and 2 km from Mylara and 36 km from Ranebennur and 326 km from Bangalore.

Shri Kuruvathi Basaveshwara Swamy Temple is around 600 years old built in accordance to Vijayanagara architecture during the period (1336-1565).

Lord Nandi also known as Basaveshwara or Basavanna is believed by followers to be a very merciful, being the fulfiller of every wish made to him by the devotees. He provides the blessing to the people by healing the wounds of their life. Lord Nandi is worshiped here as main deity. In Kuruvathi Lord Basaveshwara is of 10 feet in length and 9 feet in height. Here Lord Basaveshwara fulfills the request of the devotees and bless them and their families if one offers Prayer to him from Bhakti.

This shrine consist of a Garbhagriha, Sukanasi, a Navaranga connecting the sanctum and outer Mandapa and a Rangamantapa. The Mandapa are built on square or polygonal plinths with carved friezes that are four to five feet height and have ornate stepped entrances on all four sides with miniature elephants or with beast. The Mandapas are supported by ornate pillars.

Kuruvathi is also known as Dakshina Kashi / Varanasi, as the Tungabhadra river flows from East to West direction, because in Kashi / Varanasi also the Ganges river flows from East to West direction. The Holy mantra chanted here is Jaya Namaha Pravathi Patheye Hara Hara Maha Deva , Om Namaha Shivaya and Om Shri Kuruvathi Basaveshwaraya Namaha.

Shri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is around 900 years old built in Western Chalukya architecture also known as Kalyani Chalukya.

Kalyani Chalukya or Later Chalukya architecture is the distinctive style of ornamented architecture that evolved during the rule of the Western Chalukya Empire in the Tungabhadra region of central Karnataka, India, during the 11th and 12th centuries.Chalukyan temples fall into two categories - the first being temples with a common mantapa (a colonnaded hall) and two shrines (known as dvi kuta), and the second being temples with one mantapa and a single shrine (eka kuta).Since the contribution of Kalyani Chalukya had very great prominence during his reign of Chalukya dynasty, that the Lord Shri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is now under the protection of Archeological Department.

Lord Shiva who killed the deamons at this place and revealed himself in a form of Lingam and is known as Shri Mallikarjuna Swamy. This shrine belongs to Eka kuta category which consist of a Mahamantapa , 3 Navaranga connecting the sanctum and outer Mandapa and a Rangamantapa, 3 Dwaar and a Garbhagriha. These 3 Navaranga has Mahamantapas that are fabulous and spectacularly incarnated by Kalyani Chalukya and these inturn leads us to Sukanasi. This Sukanasi finally leads us to Garbhagriha where Lord Shiva resides. This Shiva Lingam is of 4 feet height.

The Rangamantapa has 12 pillars which are in triangular form in all 3 direction and is of 8 feet height with the width of 4 feet each, where we can find Lord Ganesha who is of 5 feet in height and Lord Subramanya, Karnataka along with Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy. The ornate pillars that support the roof of the mandapa are monolithic shafts from the base up to the neck of the capital.

There are 3 Entrance for this temple. Each of these Dwaars are beautifully incarnated with the traditional design that influences the Western Chalukya architecture. The Goddess Shri Bhuvaneshwari's idol is beautifully incarnated on the Main Dwaar of the temple.

Muktheshwara Temple, Haveri, Karnataka

Chaudayyadanapur is a small village in Ranebennur taluk, Haveri District, Karnataka, India. All facets of Indian civilization (religion, art and poetry) are exemplified in an exquisite Mukteshwara temple, with the highest degree of refinement.
The Mukteshwar Temple is a single cella temple in Jakkanachari style. Similar temples were built under the patronage of Kalachuris of Kalyani or Seuna dynasties. This temple is a jewel of architecture of the 11th–12th centuries. It was built during the heyday of the kingdom ruled by the Kalyani Chalukyas and the Seunas of Devagiri. It is dedicated to an Udbhava (spontaneously born) Lingam named Mukteshwar.

The dome of the temple is hollow and is closed by the slabs of the stupi. Shikhara of the Mukteshwara temple is 2.2 m in its axis at the base. The stupi is made of three beautiful lotiform mouldings diminishing in size and a lotus bud with its base.
The history of Mukteshwar Temple at Chaudayyadanapur is known through seven inscriptions in medieval Kannada, engraved on large steles. They provide information on the local rulers, kings of Guttala (Gupta ascendancy), on some constructions in the temple complex, on diverse donations to the deity.

They provide the details on a prominent religious leaders. Inscriptions introduce Muktajiyar, a Lakulasaiva saint, and Shivadeva, a Virashaiva saint, who entered the place on the 19 August 1225 and led there a long life of renunciation, asceticism and spiritual elevation. The legacy of this age of intense Shaivism is a jewel of architecture and sculpture.
