Kakamega is 52 km north of Kisumu, the tenth largest city in Kenya and considered the heart of Luhyaland. The average elevation of Kakamega is 1,535 metres.

Butere is a town in western part of Kenya ,Kakamega County..it has an urban population of about 6500.Until 2010, the town was the capital of former Butere/Mumias District.
Butere town is located in Butere subcounty, in central Marama ward, a short drive from Kakamega town.
Butere doesn't have established industries apart from a few metal fabricators. Retail shops, butcheries, posho mills, and bars dominates the informal sector. The main economic activity is agriculture, with maize farming constituting the majority of cultivated crops.
The Kakamega county Government has recognized the need to capacitate satellite town such as Butere to ease the pressure on Kakamega town .This work has been commenced by setting up offices in all sub counties to reduce traffic to headquarters.
