10 Most UNDERRATED and OVERRATED Places To Visit In Italy!

If you're thinking of visiting Italy and want to make sure that you see the best it has to offer and avoid the hype, look no further. Here are Italy's Most Underrated and Overrated Destinations.
First up are the most underrated.

1. Castelli Romani.
Castelli Romani is a series of 14 small towns southeast of Rome in the Alban Hills. Each little town has its own distinct beauty and strong points, be it the Volcanic Lake of Nemi, or the Lake Di Albano, the bread from Genzano, the roast pig from Ariccia, or the beautiful park in Frascati, its easy to see why the Pope's have their summer home here and also why it's one of Rome's best-kept secrets.

2. Urbino.
Urbino is a walled city in the Marche region of Italy, Urbino is similar to Tuscany but cheaper and with about a quarter of the tourists. Rich in history and art, walking through its streets will take you back 600 years to the Renaissance then you can sit at one of its many restaurants to try its trademark pasta and wine, Strozzapreti, and Verdicchio white wine.

3. Procida.
Procida is a little island off the coast of Naples. If you are looking for the old romantic Italy, white sand beaches, colorful fishing boats in a quaint harbor, and a rainbow of houses lining the streets, then Procida is the place to go, Procida is like Capri but without the Jet-set, no designer shops or fancy spas, just traditional Italian beauty without the glitter on top.

4. Arcipelago Di La Maddalena.
The Maddalena archipelago is a group of seven islands in the Strait of Bonifacio, only three of them are inhabited, Caprera, Santo Stefano, and Maddalena, Maddalena is also a national park, its beautiful coastline, hospitable people, and ancient fortifications are just some of the reasons its a popular holiday destination for the Italians, especially among boaters.

5. Turin.
Turin is a different side of Italy, unlike the romantic towns that represent the simple slower lifestyle of fishermen and farmers, Turin is the industrial side of Italy, where the rich built their palaces, the religious built their cathedrals, and the studious built their museums. Turin has so much to offer that you'll need at least 2 to 3 days there just to begin to appreciate it.

Now The Most Overrated!

1. Milan.
Milan may be famous for fashion but the city itself is rather depressing, most of its architecture was destroyed during WWII, and of what is left, only The Milan Cathedral is really worth a visit but even that feels a little too modern. In Milan, it seems that the weather, the architecture, and the cuisine strive to be noticed by differing from the Italian norm but end up being a little too dull to really stand out.

2. Capri.
Capri is beautiful but its popularity with the rich and famous has damaged it greatly, It gives the feeling of an exclusive club with a dress code to get in. If you aren't rich, you probably won't feel comfortable and if you are rich, seeing so many cookie-cutter versions of yourself will probably make you feel uncomfortable too! especially when you can visit Procida and get the Caprician experience without having to deal with Capricious people.

3. Trieste.
Trieste is one e short of triste which means sad in Italian and this is, in fact, a rather good description of the city. Trieste has a high living standard, it's popular with students and researchers, it's plagued by the Bora, a cold wind coming from the north that can reach speeds of up to 80mph (129kph) and can last for days, its architecture is large and yet oddly unimpressive, and it is also one of the safest cities in the world. If you are thinking of living here then it is probably the ideal location, but for a vacation, Trieste is a little too, Triste.

4. Costa Smeralda.
The Emerald Coast is another one of those locations that became popular with the extremely rich and famous and has now become the go-to place for the not-so rich and famous and the We'd like people to think we're rich and famous. Prices are high all year round but in August they become abusive. This gives you the feeling of a place that isn't really Italian but has been made to look Italian, like little Italy in New York or Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, what the Emerald Coast has gained in notoriety it has lost in authenticity, and what once was a Gem is now nothing more than cut glass!

5. Cortona.
Cortona became famous because of the book Under The Tuscan Sun. It is now visited by thousands of people trying to relive the story and search out the locations mentioned within the book's pages, this may all seem very romantic, but the truth is that quaint towns like Cortona are dotted all over Italy and when compared to them, Cortona doesn't really have anything special to offer, unless of course, you enjoy walking down old stones streets with hundreds of other tourists.

10 Things to do in Matera, Italy Travel Guide Food Video Transcript:

One destination that’s been at the very top of our travel bucket list for a while now is Matera, and on this trip to Italy, we were determined to make it happen!

Nicknamed “the stone city”, Matera has been quite literally dug out of the rock, and it’s a sight you won’t soon forget. Set on the slope of a rocky ravine, the landscape is dominated by cave dwellings, zigzagging staircases, and early churches that hold some incredible frescoes once you set foot inside.

During our visit, we stayed in the “sassi”, which is the ancient town, and in our opinion, the best way to soak in the vibe of this place.

Now in this video, we’re going to take you on a tour of the city and show you some of the things you can see, do and eat when you visit Matera.

Matera is well-known for its rupestrian churches, carved into the rock and covered in frescoes.

We first stopped by Chiesa Rupestre di San Pietro Barisano, which is the largest rock church in the city of Matera.

We wanted to show you the frescoes, so we continued to Convento di Sant’Agostino, a church and convent dating back to the late 16th Century. We started walking uphill via a series of staircases and winding streets, until we found ourselves in front of Matera Cathedral.

The rocky landscape we noticed is called Murgia (MoorJa) National Park and it’s an archaeological site with cliffs, gorges & caves.

Let’s take a quick break to introduce you to Materan cuisine. Like most of the establishments in Matera, this restaurant was set in a cave and we ate pasta, wine & dessert?

We spent a lot of time visiting cave churches, but for a look at how locals lived in these troglodyte dwellings, we visited Casa Grotta.

The Sassi District is a made up of a network of dwellings carved into the steep slopes of the valley walking into the Casa Grotta.

We visited Palombaro Lungo, a massive water cistern that sits directly under Matera’s main square.

After visiting Palombaro Lungo, we also found ourselves in front of the ruins of Chiesa del Santo Spirito. The church sits beneath Piazza Vittorio Veneto where you can make out frescoes on the walls.

Continuing our quest for Materan cuisine, we ended up at Ristorante Nadi - another cave restaurant that we stumbled upon by chance to see if we could get through a 4 course meal.

Our final recommendation for Matera would be to explore the city at night. Matera looks magical between sunset and blue hour and it was a pleasure to wander around with camera in hand.

And that’s a wrap for Matera! We hope you guys enjoyed discovering Italy’s famed Stone City, and we’ll see you soon with more videos from Italy.

20 Things to do in Florence, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript: (FIRENZE)

Florence: when it comes to Renaissance art, there’s probably no better city in the world to soak it all in!

Our time here was spent viewing works by Italian masters both in museums and public spaces, marvelling at the architecture - in particular Florence Cathedral and its massive dome, going in search of the best lookout points, and eating plenty of pizza & gelato sharing the best things to do in Florence on your visit.

We paid 15 Euros for a ticket that gave us access to 5 attractions associated with Florence Cathedral. Giotto’s Campanile, the bell tower stands 84.7 metres with 414 steps.

We made our way over to our next attraction: the Baptistry. Known as both the Florence Baptistry and the Baptistry of Saint John.

We continued to Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, which is a museum dedicated to conserving artworks relating to Florence Cathedral.

It was time to climb the dome of Florence Cathedral. We ate our gelato at Grom and it was delicious.

The Uffizi Gallery is considered one of the best museums in the world focusing on the Italian Renaissance. Most of the art collection you see today was gifted to the city of Florence by Anna Maria Luisa, the last Medici heiress.

From Uffizi Gallery you get some pretty cool views of Ponte Vecchio and the Arno River from a higher vantage point.

We visited in Florence was Piazza della Signoria, an L-shaped square right in the heart of the city. A landmark in this square is Palazzo Vecchio or the Town Hall. And to the right of this building, you have the Loggia dei Lanzi.

Speaking of David, we did find him, over at Galleria dell’Accademia. Michelangelo’s David depicts the Biblical David carved out of a single block of marble.

Ponte Vecchia during the 16th century that one of the Medici ordered for the butcher shops to be replaced with jewellers.

When it comes to sunset in Florence, there are no better views than from Piazzale Michelangelo overlooking the historic center on the other side of the Arno River.

This indoor market is foodie central with the second floor of the market is filled with eateries. Central Market is a great place to pick up ingredients to bring back to your kitchen.

We hope you enjoyed this Florence travel guide and that it gave you ideas of things to do.

10 Best Places to Visit in Italy

Welcome to our channel. In this video, we are going to talk about the 10 Best Places to Visit in Italy.

So before starting, please like this video, and subscribe to our channel for future updates. Is there a country on the planet that takes its past as casually as Italy? Modern skyscrapers cast lengthy shadows over neoclassical cathedrals, while Roman remains coexist with Renaissance palazzos. The undulating landscapes of Tuscany, the sandy beaches of Sardinia, the fashion credentials of Milan, and the exquisite food of just about everywhere from the Alps down are just a few of the reasons why this is the world's fifth most visited country.

10 UMBRIA.
Umbria was once known, if at all, as Tuscany's less appealing sibling. Not any longer: Italy's green heart is now just as well-known as its more famous neighbor.

9. PUGLIA.
Puglia is the place to travel in Italy for a peaceful coastal alternative to the tourist-heavy north, thanks to its ancient ruins and unpretentious attractions. Looking at the region's olive trees, whitewashed hilltop towns, scorched earth, and unforgiving heat, one might think it's more like the melting pot of Greece than the grandeur of Rome, but if you look closely, the landscape is stamped with many footprints – Byzantine, Arab, Balkan, and Romanesque, to name a few. The Renaissance did not completely ignore southern Italy, but it certainly left fewer traces.

8. SICILY.
Sicily has long served as a crossroads and crucible for Mediterranean culture, and the island is now a fascinating palimpsest of Greek temples, Norman churches, and Baroque palazzos. It also has lots of natural attractions, from Mount Etna's smoldering craters to the southern coast's still relatively unknown beaches.

7. ITALIAN LAKES.
The Romans were the first to recognize the lakes' potential as some of Italy's premier vacation spots. They erected their opulent villas in great locations near Como and Garda, where the southern foothills of the Alps flow down to the Mediterranean and northern Italy's fertile plains, providing some of Europe's most magnificent landscapes.

6. MILAN.
Milan may surprise people who are familiar with Rome and Florence and expect more of the same from Lombardy's urban capital because it has a more northern European appearance and feels. It is Italy's fashion and design center, with a worldwide cosmopolitan viewpoint, a thriving food and beverage scene, and a wide range of hotels to suit all budgets.

5. AMALFI COAST.
The famed Amalfi Coast has been luring visitors since ancient times with its breathtaking landscape and sophisticated yet laid-back culture, which was first discovered by the jet-set in the 1960s. There was no route connecting the little settlements along the coast until the Strada Statale 163 was blasted out of the base of the Lattari mountains in 1852.

4. TUSCANY.
Culture is an optional extra in many other parts of the world, something you do in your leisure time. It's at the heart of everything in Tuscany – but not in an aristocratic way. A fresco by Piero Della Francesca embodies the attitude of an area that has traditionally valued beauty and quality.

3. ROME.
Even though Rome has been there for nearly three thousand years, it wears the weight of history with a dolce vita lightness of heart. It's a city that has the closeness and human scale of a town while yet offering the cultural attractions of a historic, art-filled European metropolis.

2. VENICE.
There are days when visitors outnumber natives two to one in this lovely jewel box of a city, and getting from the station to St Mark's Square is a battle. Despite this, Venice never ceases to enchant: coming out of the station and being welcomed by a gleaming canal with the dome of San Simeon Piccolo beyond is still a heart-stopping experience, whether you're doing it for the first or 100th time.

1. FLORENCE.
Firenze is one of Europe's great art cities and the birthplace of the Renaissance. But beautiful Florence is more than just museums and monuments. It's bursting at the seams with unique businesses and high-quality crafts; it's a vibrant city with a diverse cultural scene that includes opera, classical music, and contemporary art.
