Driving in Albania ???????? | From Gramsh to Grabovë e Sipërme

Gramsh is a town and a municipality in Elbasan County, central Albania. The municipality was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Gramsh, Kodovjat, Kukur, Kushovë, Lenie, Pishaj, Poroçan, Skënderbegas, Sult and Tunjë, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the town Gramsh. The total population is 24,231 (2011 census), in a total area of 739.75 km2. The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 8,440.

Grabovë e Sipërme is a village in Albania inhabited by Aromanians. The village is located in the former municipality of Lenie. At the 2015 local government reform it became part of the municipality Gramsh.

Grabova was a medieval town created in the 10th century. Aromanians have left Grabova on several occasions, although the village has never been completely deserted. The first wave of depopulation took place in the 17th century, when Grabova shared the fate of Moscopolis and during the inter-war period, starting with 1931, many of Grabovars emigrated to Elbasan and Lushnjë. In 1933, 15 families from the village emigrated to Romania; they initially settled in Southern Dobruja and then, in 1940, in the village of Nisipari, Constanța County, from where they moved to the larger nearby towns (Medgidia, Ovidiu, Constanta) Another important immigration began in 1950, when communist authorities used the craftsmen from Grabova to build the industrial units in Korçë, Pogradec, Gramsh, Elbasan, and Tirana.

In the 18th century the Grabovë Church was built in the village.

I rode northwest to a small village, Fshat, close to the North Macedonia border. My first ride was 163km northeast to a small guesthouse I found online, Guesthouse Shtini I was intrigued as this guesthouse seemed to provide a truly remote Albanian village experience. So I booked a couple of nights thinking that I would have enough time to do everything at once.
Having ridden the first 150km, I realized that I couldn't treat this riding experience to be the same as the one I had in Serbia. My scooter in Serbia was 300CC yet this one was 150CC. Unlike Albania, Serbia's topography is a lot flatter and less mountainous, so riding was easier and faster.
As I was reaching the guesthouse, I wasn't aware of the 8km unpaved road so it came as an unwelcoming surprise. This last section ride was more challenging and frustrating than I expected as I have been on the road for 7 hours on that day. The weather was getting colder and colder as the road kept ascending passing by canyons and mountains.
I arrived at the guest house at 6:30 pm, felt cold and was extremely exhausted. Having been in Albania for more than 3 weeks at this point, I was missing my husband and the comfort of our home in England.

Drugi odcinek z serii o Albanii zaczniemy nad jeziorem Szkoderskim i odwiedzimy największą miejscowość północnej Albani - Szkodre. Przejdziemy się wiszącym mostem nad jeziorem Shkopet i zobaczymy pierwszą średniowieczną stolicę Albanii - Kruje (Krujë). Zajrzymy do zamku Skanderbega zbudowanego pod nadzorem bohatera w 1463r. znajdującego się na przylądku Rodon. Wstąpimy do stolicy Albani - Tirany, w której zejdziemy kilka pięter pod ziemię do ogromnego bunkra Envera Hodży oraz zobaczymy słynną Piramidę zaprojektowaną przez córkę dyktatora
