Burghausen / Germany is a town in Upper Bavaria which is home to the longest castle complex in the world. There are six castle courtyards lined up that make up a length of over one kilometre. There are more famous castles in Germany, the town is good to visit on a tour with Altötting and Mühldorf which are a short train ride away.
On this walk we start at the old town of Burghausen and then make the climb up to the castle hill. We see a part of the longest castle with a great view over Burghausen. At last we head back to the train station where we continue our journey.

Burghausen Castle Germany
The castle hill was settled as early as the Bronze Age. The castle (which was founded before 1025) was transferred to the Wittelsbachs after the death of the last count of Burghausen, Gebhard II, in 1168. In 1180 they were appointed dukes of Bavaria and the castle was extended under Duke Otto I of Wittelsbach.
With the first partition of Bavaria in 1255, Burghausen Castle became the second residence of the dukes of Lower Bavaria, the main residence being Landshut. The work on the main castle commenced in 1255 under Duke Henry XIII (1253–1290). In 1331 Burghausen and its castle passed to Otto IV, Duke of Lower Bavaria.

Das erste Mal auf ein Mittelalterfest und meine Erwartungen wurden übertroffen! finde es sehr interessant die Reise zurück in die Vergangenheit zu machen und sehen wie man früher so gelebt hat.
Die Burg zu Burghausen ist eine Höhenburg oberhalb der Altstadt der gleichnamigen Stadt und ist mit 1051 Metern die längste Burganlage Europas und gilt seit einem Eintrag im Guinness-Buch der Rekorde als „längste Burg der Welt“

A few words about the *History of Burghausen*.
The history of Burghausen dates back to the 11th century, when a castle was built here, which over the centuries was expanded into one of the largest castle complexes in Europe.
In the Middle Ages, Burghausen was an important trading centre and a major town in the Duchy of Bavaria. The town was often fought over and changed hands several times until it finally became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in the 19th century.
During the Second World War, Burghausen was bombed and badly damaged by the Allies. After the war, the town was rebuilt and developed into an important industrial location, especially through the establishment of chemical companies.
Today Burghausen is best known for its imposing castle complex, which attracts numerous visitors every year. However, the town also has a lively old town with historic buildings, churches and museums.
