Mt.Kailash Yatra V-log #2: I Touched and Tasted Mount Kailash (can Mt.Kailash be climbed?)

The route of day 2 in a general Kailash kora is from Dirapuk Monastery to Dzultripuk Monastery. However, this time, I would like to show you a special day trek to the glacier of Mount Kailash on my second-day trek of Mount Kailash.

Due to the unique religious significance, Mount Kailash is unclimbable. It is a rare chance to climb up to the glacier of Mount Kailash at 5,700 meters above sea level. And this is the closest way we could see the peak of Mount Kailash.

Let’s follow our video to take the ultimate journey to the center of the world.

I started my trek at 10 a.m. from the Dirapuk Monastery Guesthouse at 5,200 meters above sea level. Finally, I arrived at the flat part of the glacier of Mount Kailash at 5,658 meters after four and a half hours of trekking.

On the way, I saw a small stream from Mt.Kailash, which is actually the source of many big and long rivers in the world, such as the Yarlung Zangbo River, the Ganges River, and the Indus River.

I saw two groups of wild Tibetan Antelopes at 5,400 meters running freely in Mount Kailash as if they were elves of the holy mountain.

Trekking above 5,400 meters above sea level became more and more difficult. Even as a Tibetan, I had to walk for two minutes and stop for a one-minute break. My heart was beating too fast and the oxygen at such altitude was too thin.

Once I reached the flat part of the glacier, the closest place one could get to the top of Mount Kailash, I couldn’t contain my excitement.

I tasted Mount Kailash. I touched Mount Kailash. I Saw Mount Kailash.

After the holy Kailash trek, I visited the Dirapuk Monastery, where you can mainly visit the original meditation cave of the great Master Milarepa. At present, there are only 6 monks taking care of this holy monastery, namely Monk Tashi and his five students.

Enjoying the northern face of the peak of Mount Kailash from Dirapuk Monastery, having some simple snacks offered by the hospitable monks…this could be a lifetime experience of your journey to Mount Kailash.

At the end of today’s sharing, I still want to remind you of a few things below:
1. If you want to do this glacier trek, you need 4 days in total, while an ordinary Kailash kora only takes 3 days.
2. Do not start your trek to the glacier before 10 a.m. for it’s too cold in the morning.
3. Please walk slowly in the mountain area for it’s too high. Even Tibetans take a long breath there.
4. Don’t forget, safety first!

Ngari Prefecture (Tibetan: མངའ་རིས་ས་ཁུལ་, Wylie: mnga' ris sa khul; simplified Chinese: 阿里地区; traditional Chinese: 阿里地區; pinyin: Ālǐ Dìqū) is a prefecture of China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Its capital is Gar County. Its administrative centre is the town of Burang Town. The largest settlement is Shiquanhe. Ngari Prefecture includes part of the Aksai Chin area, a disputed region claimed by India but over which China exercises administrative control. The paved Xinjiang-Tibet Highway (新藏公路) passes through this area. There are well-known prehistoric petroglyphs near the far western town of Rutog.

The town of Ngari lies 4,500 metres (14,800 ft) above sea level in northwest Tibet some 1,600 kilometres (990 mi) west of the capital, Lhasa. Ngari Gunsa Airport began operations on July 1, 2010, becoming the fourth civil airport on the Roof of the World (shortening the trip to Lhasa to one-and-a-half hours from three or four days by car). The other airports in Tibet are Lhasa Gonggar Airport in Lhasa, Qamdo Bamda Airport in Chamdo and Nyingchi Mainling Airport.[1]

Ngari was once the heart of the ancient kingdom of Guge. Later Ngari, along with Ü and Tsang, composed Ü-Tsang, one of the traditional provinces of Tibet, the others being Amdo and Kham.

During my ride from Bangkok to Scotland the group took a side trip to this amazing place in Tibet. High, cold and dusty. Two of us missed the turning on the main road and ended up hundreds of KM away in the wrong place and had to back track only just reaching here without running out of fuel. I had about a tea cup (250cc) of fuel left on arrival.

Stunning scenery in Tibet-Namunani Mountain

Mount Namunani is located in Burang County, Ngari Prefecture, Tibet, on the south bank of the holy lake Mabangyongcuo, with an elevation of 7694 meters. It is the highest peak in China in the western section of the Himalayas. Many human figures use words such as Yongrong and Kindness to accommodate Mount Munani. Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra via Nepal is as follows:
Small Aircraft takes us from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj to Simikot. (Approx.3000 meters altitude). (Acclimatization)
From Simikot to Hilsa, small village near China border via Helicopter.
From Hilsa cross the border and after immigration travel in china (Tibet) to Mansarovar and finally Kailash.

Hilsa (Nepali: हिल्सा, hilsā) is a town on the northwestern corner of Nepal bordering Tibet Autonomous Region (China) where the Humla Karnali crosses from the Tibetan Plateau into the mountain regions on its descent to the Ganges. Hilsa is in Humla District, Karnali Zone facing Burang County, Ngari the westernmost prefecture of the T.A.R.

Background
From Hilsa, a rough road extends 51 kilometres (32 mi) into Nepal as far as Simikot.[1] From Simikot, transport onward to the rest of Nepal is on foot or by air, meaning that goods arriving from the south are expensive. Goods trucked in through the T.A.R. are cheaper, despite the long distances from China's coastal factories. The Government of Nepal operates a customs checkpoint in Hilsa, mainly to levy duties.

Across the bridge that is the actual border point, Chinese officials concern themselves with passport control. Ethnic Tibetans are largely barred from leaving for Nepal and India. Admission to T.A.R. is only granted to groups who acquire liaison officers at the border. Visitors are mainly tourists and pilgrims of the Bon, Buddhist, Hindu, Jain and even New Age faiths bound for Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash. Beyond Hilsa, they proceed by road some 56 kilometres (35 mi) up the Karnali to Burang Town, known to Nepalis and Indians as Taklakot (तकलाकोट, taklākoț). It is the main staging point for excursions to the holy lake and mountain.

The Brahmaputra Trans-boundary river. Yarlung Tsangpo ব্রহ্মপুত্র নদ ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी tour *virtual

The Brahmaputra. Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet, Siang/Dihang River in Arunachal Pradesh and Luit, Dilao in Assam, is a trans-boundary river which flows through Tibet, India and Bangladesh. It is the 9th largest river in the world by discharge, and the 15th longest.
With its origin in the Manasarovar Lake region, near the Mount Kailash, located on the northern side of the Himalayas in Burang County of Tibet as the Yarlung Tsangpo River, it flows along southern Tibet to break through the Himalayas in great gorges (including the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon) and into Arunachal Pradesh (India). It flows southwest through the Assam Valley as Brahmaputra and south through Bangladesh as the Jamuna (not to be mistaken with Yamuna of India). In the vast Ganges Delta, it merges with the Padma, the popular name of the river Ganges in Bangladesh, and finally, after merging with Padma, it becomes the Meghna and from here, it flows as Meghna river before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

About 3,848 km (2,391 mi) long, the Brahmaputra is an important river for irrigation and transportation in the region. The average depth of the river is 30 m (98 ft) and its maximum depth is 135 m (443 ft) (at Sadiya). The river is prone to catastrophic flooding in the spring when the Himalayan snow melts. The average discharge of the river is about 19,800 m3/s (700,000 cu ft/s), and floods reach about 100,000 m3/s (3,500,000 cu ft/s). It is a classic example of a braided river and is highly susceptible to channel migration and avulsion It is also one of the few rivers in the world that exhibits a tidal bore. It is navigable for most of its length.

The Yarlung Tsangpo is the upper stream of the Brahmaputra River located in the Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It is the longest river of Tibet.
Originating at Angsi Glacier in western Tibet, southeast of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, it later forms the South Tibet Valley and Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon before passing into the state of Arunachal Pradesh, India. Downstream from Arunachal Pradesh the river becomes far wider and is called the Siang. After reaching Assam, the river is known as Brahmaputra. From Assam, the river enters Bangladesh at Ramnabazar. From there until about 200 years ago it used to flow eastward and joined the Meghna River near Bhairab Upazila. This old channel has been gradually dying. At present the main channel of the river is called Jamuna River, which flows southward to meet Ganges, which in Bangladesh is called the Padma.
When leaving the Tibetan Plateau, the River forms the world's largest and deepest canyon, Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon.

Lake Manasarovar or Manas Sarovaram, also called Mapam Yumtso in Tibetan. It is a high altitude (15000 ft approx) freshwater lake fed by the Mount Kailash in Burang Nagri, Tibet. The lake is revered as a sacred place in four religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bön. Mansarovar is also a source of 4 great Indian rivers named Sindhu (Indus), Sutlej, Brahmputra and Karnali (Gaghara or Saryu). We have uploaded many other Videos about Kailash Mansarovar:
