Jinja is in Jinja District, #Busoga sub-region, in the #Eastern Region of Uganda. It is approximately 81 kilometres (50 mi), by road, east of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda.
It sits along the northern shores of Lake Victoria, near the source of the White Nile. The city sits at an average elevation of 1,204 metres (3,950 ft) above sea level. Top 5 Stopovers to Make on Your Journey to Jinja
Jinja is a new City in eastern Uganda, located on the shores of Lake Victoria. It is the source of the White Nile, which flows north from Jinja to join the Blue Nile in Sudan.
The City is a popular stop for travelers on safari in Uganda. There are many things to see and do in Jinja, including boat rides on the Nile, visiting the source of the Nile, bungee jumping, and whitewater rafting.
In this video, we review 5 of our favorite stopovers to jinja:
1. NAMAWOJJOLO
Namawojjolo is an important stopover on the Kampala - Jinja highway in Uganda. Located just 11km from Mukono town, it offers travelers a wide variety of snacks and street food, notably its famous chicken.
Most unique about eating in Namawojjolo are the muchomo hawkers who offer roast meat delicacies to travelers through their car windows, typically wearing either maroon or blue gowns.
When asked about this unusual distinction, Moses Mukasa Magaasi , vice chairman of the area explained that Namawojjolo is divided into two zones- East and West - each with their own markets identified by the color of gown worn by vendors in each market.
In the 1970s, four women arrived in Kunyanya to trade farm products like sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and onions with travelers.
What began as food trading eventually grew into a thriving market when Muchomo set up a beef and chicken roasting business.
The residents at the time were mainly farmers living 15 meters apart in a bushy yet developing area. Magaasi remarks that this was where Namawojjolo's success first started to take off.
2. Mabira Forest
Situated about 70km south of Kampala on the Kampala - Jinja highway, Mabira Forest is a recommended stopover on the Kampala - Jinja highway in Uganda. It's a great place to stretch your legs, have a picnic lunch, and take in the scenery.
The forest is also home to many different species of birds, so it's a great place for bird watching. Keep your eyes peeled for the African Grey Parrot, the Blue-headed Bee-eater, and the Scarlet-chested Sunbird.
If you're looking for a place to enjoy the outdoors and see some amazing wildlife, then be sure to add Mabira Forest to your list of places to visit in Uganda.
3. Bannz Nile Grill
Bannz Nile Grill is a must-stop destination for visitors to Jinja, Uganda. The restaurant is best known for its excellent food and drinks, but it also offers a unique experience of Ugandan culture.

The Nile River flows over 6,600 kilometers (4,100 miles) until emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. For thousands of years, the river has provided a source of irrigation to transform the dry area around it into lush agricultural land. Today, the river continues to serve as a source of irrigation, as well as an important transportation and trade route.The Nile River flows from south to north through eastern Africa. It begins in the rivers that flow into Lake Victoria (located in modern-day Uganda, #Tanzania, and #Kenya), and empties into the Mediterranean Sea more than 6,600 kilometers (4,100 miles) to the north, making it one of the longest river in the world. The Nile River was critical to the development of ancient Egypt. In addition to Egypt, the Nile runs through or along the border of 10 other African countries, namely, Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. Its three main tributaries are the White Nile, the Blue Nile, and the Atbara.The soil of the Nile River delta between El Qâhira (Cairo) and the Mediterranean Sea is rich in nutrients, due to the large silt deposits the Nile leaves behind as it flows into the sea. The banks of the Nile all along its vast length contain rich soil as well, thanks to annual flooding that deposits silt. From space, the contrast between the Nile's lush green river banks and the barren desert through which it flows is obvious.
