Buckner Cave Trip Saturday, March 2, 2019 | Caving | Outdoor Adventure | Spelunking

After 12 years since I last visited Buckner Cave, my time to re-visit this historic and extremely popular cave as come! While I have put this cave off for a long time, I absolutely had a blast inside, with 3 first-time cavers and one who has not ever been to Buckner Cave, with only Sullivan Cave being his first cave! Enjoy our trip!

Buckner Cave
Time Entered Cave: 10:00 AM
Time Exited Cave: 4:30 PM
Total Time in Cave: 6.5 Hours
Outside Ambient Temperature: 38ºF
Internal Cave Temperature: 58ºF
Cave Conditions: Rising external barometric pressures causing the cave to inhale surface air to equalize to the surface. Overall, cave was dry, with small patches of mud in the stream passage.

Located in the Crawford Upland in Bloomington, Indiana, and managed by the Richard Blenz Nature Conservancy Buckner Cave is probably one of the most well-known Central Indiana caves, as well as one of the most travelled. The cave is on private, controlled access property, and a 1-week advanced notice for permission is required, as are signed waivers and completed sign-in/sign-out sheets. Due to the heavy traffic, Buckner Cave became the unfortunate victim to heavy levels of graffiti ranging from spray paint to trash and debris, to spent carbide. While a huge effort is underway to remove the trash and graffiti, and it shows, there is still a lot. Inside what is now known as the LV Cushing Room, or, The Signature Room, the graffiti was the worst. It has since been cleaned up, and the oldest known signature was from 1775 with the name LV Cushing. The cave consists of 3.47 miles of surveyed passage with 3.4 miles of true horizontal cave length.
While the entrance of the cave is a large walk-in entrance at the bottom of a 50-foot sink, the major portion of the cave is accessed via a 650’ crawlway that leads to the main parts of the cave. There are areas of the cave that meet into huge rooms, such as The Monument Room, The Volcano Room, The Big Room and The Upper Level Breakdown Room. While these rooms are huge in dimensions, a lot of the cave is accessed via tight passages, climbs and descents, as well as crawls and squeezes in places.
For me, it has been 12 years since I have been in this cave, and after this most recent trip, I sure was glad I went again!

Abandoned Military Base Turned City | Largest Building in Alaska | Destination Adventure.

Entering the Buckner building is trespassing and will result in criminal charges. Any damages caused by entering the premises will result in additional criminal charges and civil liability. This building has not been maintained since it was abandoned by the military and contains numerous physical and environmental hazards.

Whittier Alaska, is a strange place with a bit of a strange story. This beautiful little coastal town is home to less than 300 residents, is accessible by boat or through a train tunnel, and most of what remains is remnants of an abandoned cold war military base. When the military abandoned this location, 35 civilians stayed behind to attempt to keep life going as they knew it. Since this town was built as a military base, there are no houses and these is only 97 acres of usable land, most of which owned by the railroad. The only place for the residents to live was the 14 floor apartment building, and they soon formulated a plan to buy it from the Government. 60 years has gone by since that time, and not much has changes in Whittier. The population has grown a lot, but still isn't enough to even fill the apartment building. Most of the other cold war era buildings have been repurposed into stores and businesses, but the largest of them all, the Buckner Building, remains abandoned. This 5 story building has been known since its construction as the City Under One Roof because it quite literally had everything a city has. From accommodation to entertainment, the Buckner had it all, and I was able to identify most of the recorded amenities. I was able to find my way to the bowling alley, jail, mess hall, multiple kitchens, shooting range, theatre and much more. To top it all off, I get to share it with all of you.

Best Places to Visit in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, Travel Guide 2023 - Things to do in New Orleans

Best Places to Visit in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, Travel Guide 2023 - Things to do in New Orleans

New Orleans is a Louisiana city on the Mississippi River, near the Gulf of Mexico. Nicknamed the Big Easy, it's known for its round-the-clock nightlife, vibrant live-music scene and spicy, singular cuisine reflecting its history as a melting pot of French, African and American cultures. Embodying its festive spirit is Mardi Gras, the late-winter carnival famed for raucous costumed parades and street parties.

New Orleans, city, southeastern Louisiana, U.S. Unquestionably one of the most distinctive cities of the New World, New Orleans was established at great cost in an environment of conflict. Its strategic position, commanding the mouth of the great Mississippi-Missouri river system, which drains the rich interior of North America, made it a pawn in the struggles of Europeans for the control of North America. As a result, the peoples of New Orleans evolved a unique culture and society, while at the same time blending many heritages. Its citizens of African descent provided a special contribution in making New Orleans the birthplace of jazz.
