Melbourne, Australia ???????? - The Most Livable City in the World? | Victoria, Australia Travel Guide

I travel to Melbourne, Australia in the state of Victoria to find out how Melbourne was voted one of the most livable cities in the world throughout the 2010s till present day. Melbourne is always in competition with Sydney as the best city in Australia. I explore the city by train and on foot to see all the sights and sounds of the city, as well as it's surrounding neighborhoods.

10 days, 7100km train journey across Australia, Cairns to Perth by rail

This is my ultimate guide to train travel in Australia. I spent 10 days in late June to travel over 7100km from Cairns to Perth via Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Cairns is the north-most railway station in Australia that is still regularly served by a government-run long-distance not-for-profit passenger train, and Perth is the western end of Australia’s standard gauge rail network. I would like to summarise and compare the different passenger trains in Australia in one video before I move on and show you the train journeys in other parts of the world. I hope you will enjoy the video. Let's go!

This video was filmed from 25 June to 30 July.

Travelling on every type of V/Line train in ONE DAY! Long-distance rail travel in Victoria

I'm now in Melbourne, Victoria. In the past 12 months, I reviewed regional trains in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, I have also travelled on Journey Beyond's luxury trains, namely the Ghan, Indian Pacific and Great Southern.
However, I didn't get to pay much attention to V/Line services here in Australia. Therefore, after a few hours of planning in front of my laptop, today I've come up with an idea of travelling on every type of passenger train in the current V/Line fleet in one day!

As of 4 May 2022, V/Line passenger train fleet include:
Broad gauge VLocity (3VL0–3VL28, 3VL30–3VL75, 3VR76–3VR79, 3VL80–3VL92)
Standard gauge VLocity (3VS93–3VS94)
Broad gauge Sprinter
Broad gauge N set
Standard gauge N set
Broad gauge H set
Z type carriage (incorporated into the N sets)*

My plan for this challenge is to catch 8 trains:
5:13am - 5:58am Melbourne - Bacchus Marsh (Broad VLocity)
6:19am - 7:14am Bacchus Marsh - Melbourne (Broad H set)
7:46am - 8:45am Melbourne - Geelong (Broad N set, First Class)
9:30am - 10:35am Geelong - Melbourne (Broad VLocity)
1:36pm - 2:59pm Melbourne - Seymour (Broad Sprinter)
3:09pm - 4:40pm Seymour - Melbourne (Standard N set, Economy Class)
5:33pm - 7:11pm Melbourne - Seymour (Broad Sprinter)
7:44pm - 9:45pm Seymour - Melbourne (Standard VLocity)

I'll start my day at4:30am, if everything goes smoothly, I'll be able to finish my day by10:00pm. How did I go? You can find out in this video!!

This video was filmed on 14 April 2022, a few footages were filmed on 13, 15, 26 and 27 April 2022.

00:00 Introduction - Southern Cross Station
02:30 Myki card vs. Paper ticket

Melbourne's Underground City Loop - Explained!

The underground City Loop is at the centre of Melbourne's busy suburban railway system, currently operated by Metro Trains Melbourne. It's quite an unusual design, being made up of four completely independent single track tunnels, some of which change direction half way through the day. This video explains the physical layout of the Loop, the reason for the direction change, and some of the other confusing aspects of this part of the network. The Melbourne suburban network is 1600mm/5'3 Broad Gauge, and electrified at 1500v DC.

Melbourne's public transport has long suffered from a lack of good orbital routes - so can the ambitious Suburban Rail Loop finally fill that gap?

Support me on KoFi:

Suburban Rail Loop Airport Video:

The Suburban Rail Loop aims to provide a new train line connect various key hubs throughout Melbourne's metro area - but it will do so at a huge cost, and will take ages to be complete. As a result, many have criticised the project and some have called for its cancelation. In this video I want to see if the project can achieve what it sets out to, and if it can justify its massive cost.

Melbourne's Electric Suburban Trains // 103 Years of History!

Melbourne has a large suburban railway network, which is 1600mm/5'3 broad gauge, and electrified at 1500v DC using overhead wires. This video follows the timeline of the many different types of train used on the network since the wires went live in 1919. These trains are all Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) that have seen regular suburban passenger service - I am not covering electric locomotives or non-passenger vehicles in this video.

A video where I talk about the Hurstbridge line for 40 minutes!

Melbourne's Hurstbridge line is a 38km suburban railway line, running from the city out to the scenic Diamond Valley in the north-east suburbs. The line is 1600mm Broad Gauge and electrified at 1500v DC. In the video I talk through the line's many interesting features from the city out to the terminus. All photographs and video are taken by Martin Bennet (that's me), I also do the writing, narration, and diagrams. The only content in this video not made by me are a couple of scans from the 1927 Victorian Railways 'Curves and Grades' book, one from the 1945 VR passenger network map, and the google maps screenshots.

At the end of the video I mention you can travel on this line by steam train during the Hurstbridge Wattle Festival, usually in August or September. You can check here for details of the next one:

For a full length diagram on the line and more details on historical dates etc, visit the Vicsig line guide page here:

Melbourne's Richmond Junction - Explained!

Richmond Junction is a large complicated junction between Flinders Street (Melbourne's busiest suburban railway station) and Richmond, carrying all the eastern suburban lines as well as regional passenger and freight trains heading to and from Gippsland. In this video I attempt to explain what all the different tracks are for, and what routes trains normally take through this area. Flinders Street is a pretty flexible station, so most routes shown are just the most common ones: many variations are possible.

A little note - in January 2023 after I made this video, the crossovers I mention at 04:04 were removed, so it is no longer possible to cross between the Caulfield Through and Local lines at Caulfield. This means Frankston trains now always use 3 & 4 at Richmond, and Dandenong/Gippsland trains always use 5 & 6.

Usual disclaimer: I'm just an enthusiast, I don't work for the railways: this video is just for fun. This is a pretty complicated topic so it's entirely possible there could be some small mistakes - if you're learning routes for a safety critical role, make sure you use an official source! This video is based on my own observations (over many years) and photos, with a little bit of help from
