Brixen is a town in northern Italy. The baroque-style Cathedral of Brixen has a sumptuous marble interior. Nearby, the Chiostro di Bressanone is a Romanesque cloister with medieval frescoes. In the Bishop's Palace, the Diocesan Museum exhibits medieval and Renaissance art, plus a collection of crèches. The Gothic White Tower features 4 bay windows. The Plose, a mountain to the southeast, has trails and ski slopes.
First mentioned in 901, Brixen is the third largest city and oldest town in the province, and the artistic and cultural capital of the valley. It is located at the confluence of the Eisack and Rienz rivers, 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Bolzano and 45 kilometres (28 mi) south of the Brenner Pass, on the Italy-Austrian border. It is flanked on the eastern side by the Plose and Telegraph (Monte Telegrafo) mountains (2,504 m) and on the western side by the Königsanger (Monte Pascolo) (2,436 m) mountain. Brixen is especially known as a major skiing resort (the Plose). Other activities include hydroelectric power, orchards, and vineyards.

The area of Brixen has been settled since the Upper Paleolithic (8th millennium BC). Other settlements from the late Stone Age have been found and in 15 BC, the area was conquered by the Romans, who had their main settlement in the nearby Säben (Sabiona). They held it until around 590, when it was occupied by Bavarians.
Alot to see in Bressanone such as :
The Cathedral (10th century), was rebuilt in the 13th century and again in 1745–54 along Baroque lines. The ceiling of the nave has a large fresco by Paul Troger portraying the Adoration of the Lamb.
The Hofburg, a Renaissance Bishop's Palace (started in the 13th century), one of the main noble residences in South Tyrol. The Diocesan Museum has several artworks, including a presepe with 5,000 figures created for Bishop Karl Franz Lodron.
The round parish church of Saint Michael (11th century). The Gothic choir and the bell tower are from the 15th century while the nave is from the 16th. The main artwork is a wooden Cireneus from the 15th century.
The Pharmacy Museum (Pharmaziemuseum Brixen), located in a nearly 500-year-old townhouse, shows the development and changes of the local pharmacy. The Peer family (now the 7th generation) has run this pharmacy since 1787, always in the same location. The museum's carefully restored rooms illustrate the development of the pharmaceutical profession over the centuries and the changes in remedies used, from the testicles of a beaver and pieces of an ancient Egyptian mummy to modern plasters and lyophilisates. All the objects and medicines on display were in use over the centuries. The Museum also has a library for historical research and the archive of the Peer family. In a separate room there is a multimedia display of the history of the family.
Outside the city is Rodeneck Castle, one of the most powerful of its time. It has precious frescoes from the early 13th century. Also important are Reifenstein Castle and Trostburg Castle in Waidbruck. In the latter lived the adventurer and minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein.

According to tradition, Bressanone was founded in 901, three centuries before the establishment of the County of Tyrol. Since 1004 and over the centuries it has been under the ecclesiastical domination of the Prince Bishop of Bressanone, of which it was the main residence. It is the seat - together with the capital of the province Bolzano - of the diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone, established in 1964 by detaching the city of Bolzano and the territory south of the latter from the archdiocese of Trento and aggregating it to the diocese of Bressanone, while the territories of diocese of Bressanone now located in Austria (Inn Valley) have been detached from the diocese of Bressanone and aggregated to that of Innsbruck.

Today we explore Brixen / Bressanone on our virtual treadmill walk. This alpine town in the Italian Dolomites serves as a jumping off point for the Alta Via 2 but it also has the wonderful charm of a small germanic village. With lots of shops, restaurants, and hotels, it also has a train station and autobus station. You can take a gondola up into the mountains as well but in this walk we stick to the town itself. Just an hours ride north of Bolzano and a couple hours from Innsbruck, Austria where we were eventually headed on this day and where we will be walking next week and following virtual walks for treadmill. English translation below. Bressanone è la città più antica di tutto il Tirolo. Sorge nella valle del fiume Isarco. Stemma della città è l'agnello. Gli edifici storici e le chiese pittoresche, in particolare il Duomo di Bressanone, testimoniano il grande passato della città. Nel Medioevo Bressanone / Brixen fu il centro religioso del Tirolo. Detenere il potere religioso a quell'epoca significava avere un grosso peso politico ed economico. Il Duomo di Bressanone è punto di riferimento della città. Anche qui troviamo le vie porticate con le loro facciate colorate e gli erker , tipiche finestre che sporgono dalle pareti degli edifici, con forma poligonale. Davanti alle massicce torri del Duomo si allestisce il mercatino di Natale di Bressanone , dietro ad esse invece si innalza la montagna di casa, la Plose. D'inverno per gli sciatori, d'estate per gli escursionisti, la Plose si trasforma in un paradiso di trekking, con innumerevoli sentieri escursionistici e fantastici panorami sulle Dolomiti. Qui nelle tradizionali malghe ci si ferma per rinfrancarsi dalle fatiche con formaggi ed insaccati tipici.
Se non ci avventura fuori dalle mura, può bastare una sola giornata per visitare la città, ci sono tanti buoni ristoranti dove poter assaggiare piatti della tradizione altoatesina, tra questi i già conosciuti Knödel di spinaci, gli Spätzle al formaggio, ma soprattutto tanto buon speck, accompagnati da un bicchiere di Sylvaner ( vino bianco tradizionale). Come dessert la Kaiserschmarrn, frittata dell'imperatore, dolce molto popolare e semplice da preparare; una gradita sorpresa! Chiunque è stato in Alto Adige sa quanto siano attrezzati da questa parti, a livello di piscine, saune, centri termali, ecc. Bressanone non è da meno, una giornata tutta dedicata al benessere si può trascorrerla all'Acquarena.
