RÜDESHEIM Germany and Castles Middle Rhine Valley [Travel Guide]
Welcome to one of Germany’s most unique treasures: The Rhine Gorge (upper middle Rhine valley)! It is a landscape of beautiful villages, vineyards and castles that is considered UNESCO World Heritage! It is a culturally and historically very interesting region to visit in Germany. Well-known is the town of Rüdesheim that is admired for its wines, beautiful houses and famous Drosselgasse. The Drosselgasse is a very picturesque alley that is considered the most popular spot in the town of Rüdesheim. The entire region is famous for its wines: Federweisser, Riesling and Icewine. A must is a visit to the vineyards above Rüdesheim; a great location for going on a hike. Just at the top of the hills is this massive monument called Niederwalddenkmal. It was built after the formation of the German empire. From the Niederwalddenkmal, you may also enjoy a brilliant view over Rüdesheim, the Rine and the surrounding vineyards. It is definitely worth to stay for a few days in this region as there are plenty of castles on the left and righten shore of the river Rhine. There are roughly 30 castles, thus plenty of medieval sites to visit! Worth to see are the castles Burg Sooneck, Rheinstein, Pfalzgrafenstein and Rheinfels. The latter is quite a large castle just at the top of this beautiful village St. Goar. It is perfect to just combine both: first seeing the castle Burg Rheinfels and then roam around the village’s alleys. St. Goar is considered quite less-touristy, but is a beautiful traditional German village. All in all, despite quite historic, this region is not overly touristy, certainly also because there are plenty of castles to visit!

Although it rained almost every day for the two weeks we were there, it was still a great trip due to excellent staff, accommodations, and food. It was worth the trip even with the rain, which the Rhine needed anyway after the worse drought in 60 years. Unfortunately, the overcast skies do not make for bright shiny photos and videos, I do not adjust them. This is what we saw so this is what we show.

Die Altstadt von Freiburg im Breisgau mit ihren Sehenswürdigkeiten – besonders dem Münster und den Bächle – ist Ziel von jährlich über drei Millionen Besuchern. „Die westliche gotische Einturmfassade ist ein Meisterwerk von europäischen Rang“, so liest man im Stadtführer über das Münster. Die mit Wasser der Dreisam gespeisten „Bächle“ sind in den meisten Straßen und Gassen der Altstadt zu sehen. Seit dem Mittelalter waren die Wasserläufe mit 15 km Länge ein Teil der Wasserversorgung Freiburgs. Heute werden sie als reine Sehenswürdigkeit weiter gepflegt.
Das Leben in Freiburg wird heute nicht unerheblich von den fast 30.000 Studenten geprägt. Die im Jahr 1457 gegründete Albert-Ludwigs-Universität ist eine der ältesten und renommiertesten Hochschulen Deutschlands. Das markante Gebäude der Universitätsbibliothek Freiburg mit einer Fassade aus Glas und dunkelmattiertem Chromstahl wurde 2015 erbaut. Die Universität ist nicht nur wegen der Studenten relevant, sie ist mit ihren fast 13.000 Arbeitsplätzen einschließlich des Klinikum einer der wichtigsten Arbeitgeber in ganz Südbaden.

Freiburg, Germany is one of the best cities to visit in Germany, hidden in the southwest part of the country Freiburg is the most sunny city in Germany. You have incredible people, beautiful black forest hikes, and the munster is a great place to visit. Also, be careful you don't fall into a bachle as that water on the side of the road could mean you might be marrying someone from Freiburg in your future.

The Rhine Gorge is a popular name for the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a 65 km section of the Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen in Germany.
It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in June 2002 for a unique combination of geological, historical, cultural and industrial reasons.
The region's rocks were laid down in the Devonian period and are known as Rhenish Facies.
This is a fossil-bearing sedimentary rock type consisting mainly of slate.
The rocks underwent considerable folding during the Carboniferous period.
The gorge was carved out during a much more recent uplift to leave the river contained within steep walls 200 m high, the most famous feature being the Loreley.
The gorge produces its own microclimate and has acted as a corridor for species not otherwise found in the region.
Its slopes have long been terraced for agriculture, in particular viticulture which has good conditions on south-facing slopes.
Most of the vineyards belong to the wine region Mittelrhein, but the southernmost parts of the Rhine Gorge fall in Rheingau and Nahe.
The river has been an important trade route into central Europe since prehistoric times and a string of small settlements has grown up along the banks.
Constrained in size, many of these old towns retain a historic feel today.
With increasing wealth, many castles appeared and the valley became a core region of the Holy Roman Empire.
It was at the centre of the Thirty Years' War, which left many of the castles in ruins, a particular attraction for today's cruise ships which follow the river.
At one time forming a border of France, in the 19th Century the valley became part of Prussia and its landscape became the quintessential image of Germany.
This part of the Rhine features strongly in folklore, such as a legendary castle on the Rhine being the setting for the opera Götterdämmerung.
The annual Rhine in Flames festivals include spectacular firework displays at Sankt Goar in September and Koblenz in August, the best view being from one of a convoy of boats.

This video is about our first night and morning waking up on the Viking River Cruise and our trips into Breisach and climbing up to the fortress at Eckartsberg. It includes leaving Basel at night and seeing the Three Kingdom monument. Then in the early morning, we went through a lock before docking at Breisach. During the day, while the others went to the Black Forest and Colmar, we spent our time in the lovely town of Breisach and enjoying the ship to ourselves (only 2-3 other couples didn’t go.) We got to watch them load supplies and spend more time in a quaint German town that was 85% destroyed in World War II.
