However, there is more to this city than just being a place for pilgrims it is a city home to wonderful Ukrainian people who live their daily lives. So as I wondered what this place was like I took myself there to discover what Uman Ukraine was really like. Join this Englishman on his adventure through Uman Ukraine.

Discovering the Secrets of Ukraine's Vinnitsa! ????????

Vinnytsia is a Ukrainian regional center and one of the main cities of Podolia. In addition to several ancient churches, the buildings of the historical center, picturesquely located on the steep bank of the Southern Bug, the Pirogov Estate Museum with the mausoleum of the great surgeon, as well as the Ukrainian Air Force Museum are interesting here.

Vinnitsa stands on the rocky shores of the Southern Bug and in this sense is quite typical of Podolia. It is believed that the name of the city comes from the Old Slavonic word vyno - a gift. There are other versions: vinnitsa - a distillery where wine beers were brewed, and Vinnichka - a river.

The first mention of Vinnitsa dates back to 1362, when the Lithuanians who captured Podolia founded a fortress here. The old Vinnitsa castle was located on the left bank of the Bug, where the Old Town district is now located, in which, however, nothing medieval remains. Since 1569 Vinnitsa has been part of Poland. The early period of the city’s existence was not rich in events, with the exception of the mysterious and still obscure history of Magdeburg rights, which was obtained back in the 16th century, then lost when the corresponding charter burned down in a fire in 1580, and restored only in 1640. Although during the entire Polish period Vinnitsa was part of the Bratslav Voivodeship, the Sejm of the gentry was located in Vinnitsa. At the same time, a Jesuit monastery was located here, followed by other areas of Catholicism. If in the Middle Ages Vinnitsa suffered from Tatar raids, then from the middle of the 17th century Cossack-peasant uprisings became the main threat to the city, which, however, did not have serious geopolitical consequences: until 1793, Vinnitsa remained under the rule of Poland, after which, together with the rest of Podolia is part of the Russian Empire.

Kamenetz-Podolsky became the center of the Podolsk province, and Vinnitsa had every chance of getting lost if it were not for the construction of the Kyiv-Odessa railway in 1870. In the second half of the 19th century, the city more than tripled in size, factories, luxurious mansions and large administrative buildings appeared. It is probably not necessary to talk about the Vinnitsa architectural style, but local architects were sensitive to fashion and creatively embodied the latest metropolitan trends, as a result of which Vinnitsa, which was not even a provincial city until 1914, does not look provincial. During the Great Patriotic War, Vinnitsa had a special position, since Hitler's headquarters Werwolf was located near the city (see Surroundings), but otherwise there were the same horrors of the occupation and the Holocaust as throughout Ukraine.

There are no large-scale industries like metallurgy in Vinnitsa, but a significant part of the city is occupied by factories - from the food and clothing industries to mechanical engineering and metalworking. Vinnytsia feels like a large, modern city with several educational institutions (the medical university has many students from Africa, which you least expect to see in Ukraine) and an active cultural life. From a tourist point of view, Vinnitsa is little known: there are neither antiquities of Western Ukrainian cities, nor Odessa charm, however, Pirogov's estate and mausoleum are of unconditional interest and have no analogues simply because of the uniqueness of Pirogov himself. The city center is also quite interesting. There are no bright monuments in it, but the architectural environment is well preserved, and the steep banks of the Bug only add charm to the city.

Tens of Thousands of Jewish Pilgrims Perform New Year Rituals in Uman

Most of hasids are staying at hotels or going to their synagogues to pray. They are not allowing media to enter the synagogues and even to talk on camera is forbidden for the pilgrims today. The main event of Rosh Hashana - is the blowing of the ram's horn or shafar. They believe - to hear it's sound is a blessing

Castle of Czernelica (Chernelytsia)

???????? Zamek w Czernelicy
???????? Чернелицький замок

Construction period: Early 17th century to 1659.

Founder: Polish magnate Michal Jerzy Czartoryski, the Voivode of Bratslav Voivodeship of the Kingdom of Poland.

Historical note:

The castle of Czernelica (Chernelytsia, currently in Ukraine) was built from early 17th century to 1659 and owes its construction to Polish magnate Michal Jerzy Czartoryski, the Voivode of Bratslav Voivodeship of the Kingdom of Poland.

The castle perimeter has been preserved but the walls are severely damaged. The gate tower is the main attraction of the castle and decorated with the Czartoryski coat of arms. Meanwhile, the Pilawa coat of arms can be found inside. The castle changed hands on numerous occasions during the Polish-Turkish War. This is the place where King John III Sobieski gathered his army before the Wallachia raid of 1686. After the Northern War the stronghold fell into decline. The Cienski family were one of its last owners, living here until the 19th century.

The “PL-UA. History of Poland” project consists of 100 short film productions depicting architectural monuments that were created in the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The series of short documentary films were screened in Ukraine. A Polish-Ukrainian team consisting of historians, journalists, writers, non-governmental organisations and youth joined forces to create the films. Project was financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland.

Tour of Hasidic Williamsburg with Tour Guide Frieda Vizel

Welcome to Hasidic #Williamsburg! I've been a tour guide in #Hasidic Brooklyn for almost ten years. I believe Hasidic Brooklyn is one of NYC's most fascinating subcultures, and I love to study it and share it.

I think my tours are special because I grew up in the Satmar Hasidic community. My first language was Yiddish, as was my son's first language. I got married to a Hasidic boy from Williamsburg in an arranged marriage. And although I left the community and really didn't feel like I can live the Hasidic lifestyle, I believe there is value in many different cultures and much to learn from each. I'm not one to pine for a homogenous world! I treasure the unique elements of Hasidic life and try to appreciate both the wonderful sides and darker sides.

In this video, I give you the introductory story of Hasidic Williamsburg by telling you its backstory and walking you through some of its institutions. It took me many months to lovingly put this video together, so I hope you'll enjoy it!

Subbotnik Jews of Russia

In the 19th century, thousands of Russian Christians began observing Shabat. Some rejected Christianity and converted to Judaiam. They became known as Subbotniks, righteous proselites and Judaizers. Hundreds of them immigrated to the Land of Israel. Most of the Subbotniks settled in newly established settlements in Galilee. The most prominent of them were the families of Dubrovin, Kurakin, Protopopov, Nechaev, Sazonov and Matveev. Why did they convert to Judaism? What was their fate? What was the fate of those who remained in Russia? Are there any Subbotniks in Russia today? In this video I am trying to answer these questions.

Explore identity and diaspora by way of the renaissance of Jewish life in Ukraine, a country that for centuries has been a bridge between Eastern and Western Europe and today struggles to create its own unique post-communist identity.

Experience first-hand the thriving Jewish community of Kharkov, Ukraine’s second largest city and the former capital, a major cultural, scientific, educational, and industrial center, and Odessa, a charming historical city on the shores of the Black Sea.

Ukraine is home to the 3rd largest Jewish community in Europe and the 5th largest in the world. Like much of former Soviet Jewry, Ukraine’s Jews have survived pogroms and the Holocaust, and outlasted Communist Jewish oppression. Today, as the country struggles with economic turmoil and an aging infrastructure, its Jewish community is growing, working tirelessly to assist its needy and to foster leadership among its most dedicated. JDC re-entered Ukraine to rebuild the shattered remnants of Jewish life following the fall of the Soviet Union. Faced with the acute suffering of Jews made vulnerable by the difficult political and economic transition, including the hyperinflation of the early 1990s, JDC provided critical food, medicine, and other support that continues as a hallmark in the region.

Inside Jewish Odessa & Kharkov has been made possible with the generous support of Genesis Philanthropy Group.
