You might not know this, but Belarus is a largely agricultural country. On all of the major highways you will drive past farmland and run into farmers selling their goods on the side of the road.
Whenever I travel to a new place, I like to check out the local farmer's market, because I usually find the freshest, best & most unique products that that place has to offer. In Minsk, the capital city of Belarus, the largest farmer's market is the Kamarovsky Rynok which is an enormous indoor market where you will find produce from Belarus and nearby countries.

다시 남으로 길을 달린다 평평한 대지만 있는 줄 알았더니 멀리 웬 산 같은 게 보인다. 하얀 언덕인데 자세히 보니 소금이다. 이곳은 벨라루스 남쪽의 살리고르스크 소금광산안으로 들어가기 위해선 완벽히 안전장비를 갖추어야한다. 긴장된 마음으로 한 발 한 발 안으로 들어가 보니 어느새 지하400미터다. 벌써 공기부터가 달라졌다. 그리고 또 하나, 벽이 온통 붉다. 이 신기해 보이는 붉은 색 벽은 대체 어떻게 생겨난 것일까? “이곳은 아주 오랜 옛날에는 바다였는데 그래서 지금 소금이 남아있고 붉은색을 띠는 건 이곳 소금 속에 철분과 같은 성분이 많이 있어서입니다.” 그런데 터널 한편 사무실, 진료소다. 각종 운동시설과 편의시설까지 갖춰진 이곳은 엄연히 병원으로 등록된 곳이다. “여기는 420m 지하에 있는 병원으로 천식 및 만성 폐 질환을 치료하는 곳입니다.” 어쩌면 이곳은 세상에서 가장 낮은 곳에 위치한 병원이 아닐까 싶다. 소금광산을 뒤로하고 다시 길을 나선다. 이번 도시는 벨라루스 북부의 비텝스크. 활력이 넘치는 문화예술의 도시라 한다. 이 도시에서 내가 처음 찾은 곳은 수공예 시장. 흥겨운 아코디언 가락에 발길은 절로 가벼워지고 마치 예술작품 같은 근사한 공예품들로 눈도 즐거워진다. 모두 다 하나 하나 만들고 칠했다는데 벨라루스 사람들, 솜씨가 보통이 아니다. “벨라루스엔 ‘슬라뱐스크 바자르’라는 행사가 있는데 매년 여름에 시장을 열고 벨라루스와 러시아 음악 공연을 펼치는 거죠. 지금 여기서 그 ‘슬라뱐스크 바자르’가 열린 겁니다.” 오늘은 ‘슬라뱐스크바자르’ 축제 기간. 사실 여름 날 벨라루스는 축제의 연속, 어디서든 쉽게 그 문화와 예술을 접할 수 있다. 오늘 비텝스크에선 슬라브 전통을 제대로 느껴본다. “슬라뱐스크 바자르 축제에서는 단순히 공연뿐만 아니라 (슬라브 전통에 대한) 애정도 듬뿍 느낄 수 있어요.” 나는 비텝스크 시내의 한적한 마을을 찾았다. 한 위대한 예술가를 만나기 위해서다. 어떤 사람들은 이곳을 일러 ‘샤갈의 눈 내리는 마을’이라고도 했다. 집 안으로 들어가면 만나게 되는 동상 하나. 바로 20세기 천재 화가. 마르크 샤갈이다. “얼핏 보면 바이올린처럼 보이지만 실은 물감과 팔레트입니다. 파리와 이 도시 비텝스크를 상징하죠. 파리는 샤갈이 생애 많은 시간을 보낸 곳이고 비텝스크는 그가 태어난 곳입니다. 바로 여기가 샤갈이 유년시절을 보낸 집이고 창작생활을 처음 시작한 곳이라 할 수 있습니다.” 이 조그만 집이 마르크 샤갈이 어린 시절을 보내며 예술가로서 꿈을 키웠던 곳이다. 어린 시절 그의 습작들. 가족과 고향집, 그것은 훗날 평생을 떠돌 그의 영원한 화두가 된다. 지난날 작은 방, 무수히 많은 꿈을 그렸을 소년의 의자, 나도 그날의 어린 마르크 샤갈처럼 그 자리에 앉아본다. 창밖으로 샤갈이 미소 건넨다. 나는 더 북쪽으로 길을 달려 벨라루스 여정의 마지막 목적지. 호수의 도시 브라슬라브에 도착한다. 이곳의 호수는 모두 그 옛날 빙하가 녹아서 만들어진 것이다. 호수의 물이 맑고 깨끗한 그들의 눈을 닮았다. “브라슬라브는 아름답고 예쁜 도시죠. 그냥 아무 생각 없이 쉴 수도 있고 친구들과 한가로이 시간을 보낼 수도 있어요. 한마디로 자연을 느끼고 쉴 수 있는 곳이죠.” 시리도록 투명하다는 게 이런 느낌일까? 이곳에선 어느덧 사람도 자연이 되어 있다. “이곳 맑은 호수에서 쉬고 시간을 보내다보면 어느새 도시에서 지친 몸과 마음이 회복되고 다시 힘이 충전되는 걸 느낍니다.” 브라슬라브의 언덕에 오른다. 우리의 장승과 비슷한 목상. 이곳에 살던 사람들, 그들의 이야기는 이제 전설이 되어 영원히 이 땅에 남았다. 전설 속 호수에 가보았다. 물결은 잔잔하고 어디선가 바람이 불어왔다. 나도 지난 여정을 돌이켜본다.
