Little Tokyo, also known as Little Tokyo Historic District, is an ethnically Japanese American district in downtown Los Angeles and the heart of the largest Japanese-American population in North America. It is the largest and most populous of only three official Japantowns in the United States, all of which are in California (the other two are Japantown, San Francisco and Japantown, San Jose). Founded around the beginning of the 20th century, the area, sometimes called Lil' Tokyo, J-Town, Shō-Tōkyō (小東京), is the cultural center for Japanese Americans in Southern California. It was declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1995.

Boyle Heights, historically known as Paredón Blanco is a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California, located east of the Los Angeles River. It is one of the city's most notable and historic Chicano/Mexican-American communities and is known as a bastion of Chicano culture, hosting cultural landmarks like Mariachi Plaza and events like the annual Día de los Muertos celebrations.

Boyle Heights War Memorial Plaques Stolen for Metal Value - speak out!

This video originally appeared in our newsletter at esotouric.substack.com/metal

For too long, significant and beautiful and useful pieces of our city’s heritage have been spirited away by metal thieves who sell them to unscrupulous dealers for scrap value. And nothing is ever done to stop this vile trade. Isn’t it time it was?

This week, as community members visited the sacred circle at Cinco Puntos on the Boyle Heights / East Los Angeles border to prepare it for the Veterans Day ceremonies, they found that the central obelisk in the Mexican-American All Wars Memorial, and the plinth honoring Eddie Morin across the road, had both been butchered, with most of the bronze ripped away.
In 2021, when we worked with concerned citizens in Atwater Village to try to halt the nightly theft of historic streetlamps from the Glendale-Hyperion Bridge, the city chose to put all the remaining poles in storage. Nobody was ever arrested, and we heard nothing about an investigation into who was buying the obviously stolen scrap from the thieves.

After reading about the latest desecration in the Eastsider LA, we went over to see for ourselves and to make this video about what we saw, and what concerned citizens can do about it.

If you agree with us that the City and County need to get serious about shutting down the criminal enterprises that buy and melt down stolen streetlights and manhole covers, fire hydrants and grave markers, war memorials and statues, please call or email the decision makers (contact info below) and tell them: “I want you to do something to stop metal theft, like the Mexican-American All Wars Memorial at Cinco Puntos that was vandalized before Veteran’s Day.”

• Hilda Solis: (213) 613-1739, firstdistrict@bos.lacounty.gov

• Kevin de Léon: (213) 473-7014, councilmember.kevindeleon@lacity.org

To a shady scrap dealer, these objects are only worth the daily spot price of bronze or iron, less a bit because the seller is obviously a crook. But to Angelenos, they are a part of our shared experience, familiar and meaningful and useful, and deserving of special care because they belong to everyone and to no one.

It’s easy to get beaten down by all the ugliness and decay infesting Los Angeles. But just because those in power let it stay this way doesn’t mean we ought to stand for it. Speak up and demand more and better—you’re worth it, and so is this wonderful place.

yours for Los Angeles,
Kim & Richard

Driving Tour of Whittier Blvd, East Los Angeles Boyle Hights

Driving Tour of Whittier Blvd, East Los Angeles Boyle Hights
East Los Angeles (Spanish: Este de Los Ángeles), or East L.A., is an unincorporated area in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 118,786, a drop of 6.1% from 2010, when it was 126,496. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined East Los Angeles as a census-designated place (CDP)
The area is notable for its high Hispanic proportion, which at over 95%, is the highest proportion of Hispanic Americans out of any city or Census-designated place in the United States outside of Puerto Rico.
Historically, when it was founded in 1873, the neighborhood northeast of downtown known today as Lincoln Heights was originally named East Los Angeles, but in 1917 residents voted to change the name to its present name. Today it is considered part of L.A.'s Eastside, the geographic region east of the Los Angeles River that includes three neighborhoods within the city of Los Angeles (Boyle Heights, El Sereno and Lincoln Heights) and the unincorporated community in Los Angeles County known today as East Los Angeles. Lincoln Heights is 4 miles (6 km) northwest of present-day East Los Angeles. When Lincoln Heights, the first east-side subdivision created in 1873, changed its name in 1917, Belvedere (Belvedere Gardens and Belvedere Heights) and surrounding unincorporated county areas were given the moniker of East Los Angeles. By the 1930s, most maps had started to label the Belvedere area as East Los Angeles.
