Discovering Wine Country Valtellina in Northern Italy

Discovering Vini di Valtellina – Chiavennasca – the Nebbiolo of the Alps

Far in the north of Italy’s Lombardia region, tucked between the Rhaetian Alps of Switzerland and the Orobiche Alps in Italy, you find the east-west valley of Valtellina. Here, the Adda River flows from the Swiss Alps through the Valtellina Valley and then out to the west into Lake Como, past Milan, and eventually to the Po River.

The Alps protect this region from storms. The rain shadow that is caused means they receive less than 900 millimeters of rain annually.

The valley’s north side, which gets the southern exposure, has terraces of vines planted to catch the light. Vineyards here are steep.

“Muretti” the dry stone walls that terrace the vines

The roots of the vines here drive into the mother rock giving the Nebbiolo here lighter tannins and higher minerality.

The Adda River has always been known to flood. Its water originates from snowpack in the Alps, so grapes were planted on the steep slopes between 300 and 800 meters above sea level.

To make caring for the vines easier, the people of Valtellina built dry stone walls to create terraces on these south-facing slopes. There are more than 2,500 kilometers of these walls, called “muretti,” in the region. They like to say this is equal to driving to Sicily and back. In 2018 the area was named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Church of Holy Mary of Grace, Soncino, Cremona, Lombardy, Italy, Europe

In 1468 the Carmelites were granted the officiating of a small church outside Porta San Giuseppe, in Soncino. In February 1501 Cardinal Raimondo Perauti, bishop of Gurk in Carinthia, laid the first stone of the new church, strongly desired by his father Pietro da Mortara. Father Antonio Maestri, already from the Carmelite convent of Mantua, was the supervisor of the works. Between 1515 and 1526 the bell tower was erected, based on a design by maestro Gerardo da Piacenza. The church was consecrated on 8 September 1528 by Monsignor Luca da Seriate, in the presence of Francesco II Sforza who had incurred the expenses for the impressive cycle of frescoes. Santa Maria delle Grazie became a pantheon church for the noble and powerful local Press family. In 1536 Charles V, in this church, invested Massimiliano Stampa with the marquisate of Soncino. The convent complex was suppressed in 1772. On the façade, of terracotta, divided into three by pilasters, there is a portal of the Bramante type, built in white marble from Rezzato (Botticino marble) and surmounted by a rose window. The building, with a rectangular plan and a single nave, has a barrel vault divided into five bays. On the sides of the nave there are shallow chapels - five on the right and five on the left. The vast cycle of frescoes that covers the interior is the work of G. Francesco Scanzi, Giulio Campi and Francesco and Bernardino Carminati. The first, the fourth and the fifth chapel on the left and the chapels on the right are frescoed by Francesco Scanzi with various subjects, including Madonna with Child, Fugue in Egypt, Annunciation, Apparition of Jesus to the Magdalene and saints. In the sails of the presbytery are depicted the four Evangelists, attributed to the painter of Cremona Giulio Campi who is also considered the author of the Assumption of Mary, painted on the arch which divides the presbytery from the apse and which originally separated the front church, which was intended for to the clergy, from the rear, reserved for the faithful. The Last Judgment, painted on the counter-façade, is the work of Francesco and Bernardino Carminati.

Altar of the Fatherland, Rome, Lazio, Italy, Europe

The Altare della Patria also known as the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II) or Il Vittoriano is a monument built in honour of Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy, located in Rome, Italy. It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill. The monument was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in 1885; sculpture for it was parceled out to established sculptors all over Italy, such as Leonardo Bistolfi and Angelo Zanelli. It was inaugurated in 1911 and completed in 1925. The monument is built of white marble from Botticino, Brescia, and features stairways, Corinthian columns, fountains, an equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel and two statues of the goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas. The structure is 135 m (443 ft) wide and 70 m (230 ft) high. If the quadrigae and winged victories are included, the height is to 81 m (266 ft). The base of the structure houses the museum of Italian Reunification. In 2007, a panoramic elevator was added to the structure, allowing visitors to ride up to the roof for 360 degree views of Rome. The monument holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame, built under the statue of Italy after World War I following an idea of General Giulio Douhet. The body of the unknown soldier was chosen on 26 October 1921 from among 11 unknown remains by Maria Bergamas, a woman from Gradisca d'Isonzo whose only child was killed during World War I. Her son's body was never recovered. The selected unknown was transferred from Aquileia, where the ceremony with Bergamas had taken place to Rome and buried in a state funeral on 4 November 1921. The flags of disbanded units of the Italian Armed Forces, as well as the flags of ships stricken from the naval register of the Italian Navy are stored at the Vittoriano in the so-called Shrine of the Flags (Sacrario delle Bandiere). The oldest flag on display is the flag of the 19th-century frigate Giuseppe Garibaldi. The monument was controversial since its construction destroyed a large area of the Capitoline Hill with a Medieval neighbourhood for its sake. The monument itself is often regarded as pompous and too large. It has been described as being chopped with terrible brutality into the immensely complicated fabric of the hill, It is clearly visible to most of the city of Rome despite being boxy in general shape and lacking a dome or a tower. The monument is also glaringly white, making it highly conspicuous amidst the generally brownish buildings surrounding it, and its stacked, crowded nature has lent it several nicknames. Foreign people sometimes refer to the structure by a variety of nicknames, such as the wedding cake, whereas Romans commonly call it the typewriter, although the zuppa inglese is also common. Despite all this criticism, the monument still attracts a large number of visitors. Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi fostered the opening of the Vittoriano as a public forum and viewpoint over the City core. This new accessibility allowed visitors to become familiar with the landmark, enabling it to grow in popular, if not critical, reputation.
