The Reality of Life in Russia 2023 (bureaucratic nightmare)
This is our life in Russia in late 2022 / 2023. Traveling to Russia as a westerner has always been difficult, a bureaucratic nightmare, but this year is the first time Matt and I have really had any issues. We arrived in my hometown of Kemerovo, Siberia, after crossing in to Russia at Kaliningrad and flying to Novosibirsk. Once here and staying with my family, we went to register with the local authorities, but everything turned out to be a little complicated to say the least. This is a week in our lives here staying in Siberia as we hang out with my family and prepare for New years eve (the biggest celebration of the year in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and many other former Soviet countries). Welcome to a very cold, wintery Siberia.

Tension and beauty on the Norway-Russia border at Grense Jakobselv
Stunning area, in more ways than one. I drove from Kirkenes, Norway to the Russian border along the tiny Jakobselv River in the far northeastern part of Norway. The road turns to gravel and leads up to the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean. This day was, fortunately, sunny. Along the way I stop to take a look at the Russian guard towers on the other side, some buildings that were among the very first liberated by the Soviets in 1944, and the landmark King Oscar II Chapel.
Then the last few meters of dusty road lead to the brutal winds and stunning beauty of the open Arctic Ocean. There's a small parking area and, surprisingly, even a few other people there. The capper, maybe, was just witnessing a seal swimming off the rocks of the coast.
All in all, this was a dream drive come true for me, and a fine way to end this epic Norwegian road trip. Grense Jakobselv and the unnerving Russian border area delivered!

Тутаев (до 1918 года — Романов-Борисоглебск, до 1822 года — города Романов и Борисоглебск) — город областного подчинения в России, городское поселение, административный центр Тутаевского района Ярославской области.
Город входит в Золотое кольцо России.
Город расположен на обоих берегах реки Волги. Он возник в результате объединения двух самостоятельных городов — Романова и Борисоглебска, располагавшихся на противоположных берегах Волги и имевших собственные административное и хозяйственное устройство; в память об этом левобережная часть носит название Романовской стороны, а правобережная — Борисоглебской.
P.S. Уверен, что город Тутаев вернет себе историческое имя Романов-Борисоглебск в ближайшее время!

Daugavpils (pronounced [ˈdɐʊɡɐʊpɪ̈ls]) is a city in southeastern Latvia, located on the banks of the Daugava River, from which the city gets its name. Daugavpils literally means Daugava Castle. With a population of over 100,000, it is the second largest city in the country after the capital Riga, which is located some 230 km to its north-west. Daugavpils has a favorable geographical position as it borders Belarus and Lithuania (distances of 33 and 25 km respectively). It is located some 120 km from the Latvian border with Russia. Daugavpils is a major railway junction and industrial centre.

Finland has completely shut down all its border crossings to Russia and ceased the issuance of new tourist visas. However, Russians are still allowed into Norway, which houses the only regular border crossing into Europe still existing—Borisoglebsk-Storskog. According to the Schengen Agreement, Russians had the right to then travel from Norway to Finland. Yet, since September 15 this year, Finnish customs have made it more challenging by blocking Russian-registered vehicles from crossing the border. And in early October, Norway began implementing what they think of as stricter restrictions. They now allow Russian-registered vehicles to pass only if they can accommodate a minimum of 10 individuals. Various routes to bypass these restrictions are actively being discussed in Russian Telegram channels, and larger buses are now being used instead.
In the small border town of Näätämö, between Finland and Norway, two businesses thrive on Norwegian customers from across the border—K-market and Nord 1. At the beginning of Russia's assault on Ukraine, Nord 1 decided not to offer tax-free sales to Russians. Store owner Jari Kekäle chose not to support the Russian invasion. Conversely, K-market made a different assessment and welcomed Russian tax-free trade, doing so with a clear conscience, according to Juha-Matti Lias, as they do not carry goods on the sanctions list.
According to information in Finnish national media, Norwegian and Finnish goods can be found for sale in Russia, both online and in small shops, and a significant portion of Norwegian and Finnish goods reportedly end up with Russian soldiers in Ukraine.
Today, on a Thursday morning, both stores were quite empty. There was hardly any traffic across the border. If there were any Russians arriving, they were not using Russian-registered cars.
