A state of many contrasts, North Carolina is home to beaches, forests and mountains with conservative towns and liberal-leaning cities tucked away amidst them. With epic outdoor activities and communities to explore and, of course, old-time Southern charm; the Tar Heel State is a fascinating place to visit. While its shoreline is home to lots of barrier islands, the Piedmont region is made up of rolling hills and fertile farms. Top 5 Hikes Near Boone, North Carolina | Blowing Rock | Best Trails in the Heart of the High Country

Boone, North Carolina is the heart of the Southern Appalachian high country, making it a springboard to many terrific hikes ranging from gentle treks to grueling efforts. This is our top 5 hikes within 20 miles of Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

CONTENTS
00:00 Intro Teaser
00:33 #5 Flat Rock
02:58 #4 Elk Knob
05:20 #3 Rough Ridge
07:33 #2 Boone Fork
10:00 HM Glen Burney
12:12 #1 Grandfather Peaks
14:42 Comparison

5. Flat Rock View
The Flat Rock View is located within Grandfather Mountain State Park, an area known for some of the South’s most challenging terrain. This reasonably challenging hike has terrific vistas made possible by rock outcroppings. The Flat Rock View can be reached from the Boone Fork Parking Area on the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Asutsi Trailhead on highway 221 during times the parkway is closed. The hike can be made into a loop by taking the Nuwati and Cragway Trail out and the Daniel Boone Scout Trail back. Details can be found in the linked video.

4. Elk Knob Summit Trail
Within North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains, near the northern state border, is the Elk Knob Summit Trail located within the newest of the North Carolina state park. An old steep and rocky road to the top was replaced in 2011 by a new, moderate hiking trail. The 5,500 foot summit is one of the highest peaks in North Carolina’s high country and thus is known for winter weather. Despite cold and snowy conditions, the park attempts to stay open throughout those winter months, often suggesting four wheel drive vehicles to take advantage of available cross-country skiing.

3. Tanawha Trail from Rough Ridge
The Rough Ridge summit can be reached with a short hike from the parking area on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This gentle trek is a small price to pay for some spectacular views. You will traverse a boardwalk and find several large outcroppings that provide great photo ops. The subject can perch on a stone slab that rises high above the layers of tree covered mountains below. Prominent in the views is the Linn Cove Viaduct, an engineering marvel that allows the parkway to snake around the base of Grandfather Mountain. Several large boulders at the summit are fit with cables to help the weary traveler to the top.

2. Boone Fork Trail
In the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina is the classic hike called the Boone Fork Trail. A great trek for furry friends, this hike has it all: stream crossings, pastures, rock hopping, meadows, lake views, and even rhododendron tunnels. The only thing it doesn’t have is a strenuous climb. The trailhead can be reached from the Price Park Picnic area on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just across the wooden footbridge. This gentle trek is a great way to enjoy the beautiful, peaceful land and water features.

HM. Glen Burney Trail
The Glen Burney Tail is tucked away in the outskirts of bustling Blowing Rock. Along this trek one will wander down a moderate path and catch a glimpse of a trio of waterfalls. Keep in mind that the dip in elevation will have to be overcome on the way out, but you’ll feel like you are much farther from town than the effort requires. There are some potential fall hazards, so keep an eye on the kiddos. Overall, this is the best waterfall hike in the Boone/Blowing Rock area.

1. Grandfather Peaks via Profile Trail
In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina lies the iconic and notoriously rugged Grandfather Mountain, home to a state park and a non-profit attraction. With a $20 entrance fee, one can traverse the ridgeline on the Grandfather Trail. Alternatively, for free you can use the Profile Trail for a steep ascent up the mountain and access the ridgeline. Our hike uses this trail and reaches all three of the tallest peaks, Attic Window, MacRae Peak, and eventually Calloway Peak. The required use of ladders, cables and all fours to traverse the rugged terrain makes this one of the most difficult and technical hikes in the eastern United States. But the rewards are astonishing. We’ll throw in a search for remains of a plane crash for good measure.

Boone, North Carolina | Best Restaurants | Where to Eat | Wild Craft Eatery | Stick Boy | Coyote

Boone is the heart of the southern Appalachian high country, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. It is the home to the 20,000-student Appalachian State University as well as the region’s first ski area. It is a great launching point for some absolutely spectacular hiking destinations, highlighted by some of the highest mountains in the eastern United States. While you experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the Southeast, enjoy some of the top food destinations in this southern mountain town.

Stick Boy Kitchen
The Stock Boy Bread Company was started in 2001, using traditional ingredients and methods to provide a wide variety of baked goods to the North Carolina High Country. In 2013 they opened Stock Boy Kitchen, a café with the same creativity and style, located conveniently off 321 on Boone Heights Drive. This quaint restaurant offers breakfast plates, bagels, soups, sandwiches and salads. But don’t worry, this location also has breads and pastries made from scratch every day.

Hole Lotta Doughnuts
Hole Lotta Doughnuts serves up hand-crafted, wagon wheel sized yeast doughnuts made the old-fashioned way. In addition to the round pastries, they offer fritters, pastries, sweet breads, cookies, gourmet popcorn, gourmet coffee, ice cream and shakes. So when that sweet tooth comes a callin’ stop by Hole Lotta Doughnuts conveniently located on King Street.

The Local Lion
The Local Lion is a more elegant coffee roastery and doughnut shop serving the Boone area from their 321 location for over 10 years. They turn out small batch craft coffees with a full espresso bar. They also have a 1930s award winning doughnut recipe that is especially noteworthy. They recently expanded into a downtown location featuring Cacao Roasting and Wine.

Coyote Kitchen
Coyote Kitchen is a family-owned Southwest Caribbean Soulfood restaurant that has become a Boone favorite since its creation back in 2003. They source foods locally and even display local artwork. They have a variety of unique meal presentations to please a range of appetites - and they are particularly proud of their vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Wild Craft Eatery
The Wild Craft Eatery can be found downtown serving up what they call good mood food. This is not only one of our favorite restaurants in Boone, but is one of favorites in the entire state. The constant rotation of specials often highlight local takes on international cuisine. Their execution is spot-on and their eco-friendly mindset is appreciated. They source locally whenever possible, including breads from Stick Boy Bakery.

Mint Indian Cuisine
Mint Indian Cuisine is located just off Highway 321 on Boone Heights Drive next to Stick Boy Kitchen. This upscale restaurant brings the exquisite spices and flavors of Indian food to the high country, providing a date-worthy atmosphere and impeccable service. But make no mistake, the food is what makes this place special, serving up marinated meats and succulent breads in their tandoor clay oven.

Proper
Proper pays homage to southern cuisine, providing a charming atmosphere in the old 19th century jailhouse, Boone’s oldest building. They feature one the best brunches in the High Country and serve up southern comfort foods including collard greens, sweet potato casserole, homemade meatloaf and delectable scratch-made desserts.

Blue Deer Cookies
Blue Deer Cookies serves cookies, ice cream, and coffee from their downtown location on King Street or their vintage, restored camper site on Highway 321. The ice cream hails from Homeland Creamery in Julian, NC. Cookie sandwiches are their specialty - and they do it superbly.
