Bacalhoa Buddha Eden | Bombarral, Portugal
The beautiful Bacalhoa Buddha Eden is very close to Lisbon and a perfect escape from the city life, located in Bombarral.
Home to an extensive collection of Buddhas, statues, and other Asian-inspired artwork, Bacalhoa Buddha Eden is the largest Oriental complex of its kind in Europe. Founded in 2001 as a reaction to the Taliban's destruction of the famous Banyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, the garden has endeavored to preserve their memory. Wander the 35 hectares (86 acres) of green space with ponds, fountains, and pagodas, and try to get in touch with the area's mission of peace and understanding. You certainly won't miss the gigantic reclining Buddha statue designed to resemble those at Banyan, or the 2,200 individual replicas of China's famous Terra Cotta soldiers. Be sure to stop by the on-site wine store for a chance to sample one of Portugal's most famous exports, produced by a local company.

Bacalhôa Buddha Eden Garden Bombarral Portugal
Visit with us Bacalhôa Buddha Eden Garden Bombarral Portugal! – the largest oriental garden in Europe, can be found. The oriental garden with around 35 hectares of land was created as a reaction to the destruction of the Buddhas of Banyan, in which one of the greatest acts of cultural barbarity took place, erasing masterpieces of late-period Gandhara art. From Buddhas, pagodas, terracotta statues and the various carefully-placed sculptures which can be found throughout the gardens, it is estimated that some six thousand tons of marble and granite were used to create this monumental work of art. The central staircase is the focal point of the garden, where the golden Buddhas offer you a calm welcome. At the central lake, KOI (Japanese carp) fish can be seen, and sculpted dragons rise out of the water. There is also the opportunity to see the seven hundred hand-painted terracotta soldiers, each of them unique copies of those which were buried some 2,200 years ago. You will be truly enchanted with the peace and tranquillity of this unique and special place!

Bombarral is a charming village in Leiria District, west Portugal. Bombarral is a farming village, located 73 km from Lisbon, about one hour drive. It's well known as a great fruit producer, especially pears, apples, and grapes. Portugal's amazing Buddha Eden Garden at Quinta dos Loridos near Bombarral and just a short drive down the autostrada from Obidos.
This is how it was back in 2011 fairly soon after it had opened. Set in beautiful tranquil surroundings, it's the 'Orient' in Portugal. Buddhas and statues some as large as you would see in the Far East and very colourful Terracotta Armies are numerous and very impressive.
Over the years it has dramatically changed and grown to include an African quarter as well as more art installations. I love this place! Bring a camera!!!
