Velikiy Novgorod is considered to be the origin of Russia. It emerged as a political centre of slavic tribes. It was one of the most important trading centres of Eastern Europe during 9th and 10th centuries. The construction of Kremlin began in 1044 on Volkhov River.
The nearby village of Vitoslavitsy is a museum of folk wooden architectures. It is a must visit, and is just a short bus ride away. While there make sure to visit St Georges (Yuriev) monastery built in 1030 by Yaroslav Mudriy.

Veliky Novgorod (Russian: Вели́кий Но́вгород; IPA: [vʲɪˈlʲikʲɪj ˈnovɡərət]), also known as Novgorod the Great, or Novgorod Veliky, or just Novgorod, is one of the most important historic cities in Russia, which serves as the administrative center of Novgorod Oblast. It is situated on the M10 federal highway connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg. The city lies along the Volkhov River just downstream from its outflow from Lake Ilmen. UNESCO recognized Novgorod as a World Heritage Site in 1992.

Ladoga Fortress in Staraya Ladoga (Old Ladoga), Russia FULL WALKING TOUR
Ladoga Fortress is located in the confluence of Volkhov river and Ladozhka river in Staraya Ladoga (Old Ladoga), one of the oldest settlements founded in 753.
According to Chronicles, the first wooden fortress was founded in 862 by Rurik and his squad when they came there and founded Russia (Old Rus).
The stone fortress was built on the border of 9th and 10th centuries.
Ladoga Fortress had a very significant strategic meaning for the control of the water way from the Baltic Sea through Volkhov river deeper inside Russia.

Vasilyevsky Island is the most famous of the St. Petersburg Islands. This is a real city within a city with its own history. Under Peter I, it was planned to create a city center here. Therefore, government buildings, a trade and scientific center appeared on Vasilyevsky Island. A characteristic feature of the island is a peculiar toponymy. Lines instead of streets, where each side of the roadway has its own name.

Переночевав на реке Тигода, с утреца, мы отправились до Великого града Новгорода. Одна погода менялась другой: то ветер налетит, то дождь прольет, то солнце намекнет на свое существование. По пути пред нами предстали невероятно красивые пейзажи лугов, местами полей, лес по берегам Волхова все реже появлялся ближе к славному городу Новгороду. И вот мы дошли! Солнцем сквозь тучи встретил нас Великий град Новгород. Здравствуй Великий Новгород! Привет яхт-клуб, вот и мы!
After spending the night on the Tigoda River, in the morning we went to the Great City of Novgorod. One weather changed to another: now the wind will blow, then it will rain, then the sun will hint at its existence. On the way, we saw incredibly beautiful landscapes of meadows, in places of fields, the forest along the banks of the Volkhov appeared less and less closer to the glorious city of Novgorod. Село старая ладога.
До 1703 года это был город Ладога. Статус города был потерян после основания Петром 1 в устье Волхова Новой Ладоги.
А Ладога был переименована в Старую Ладогу и потеряла статус города.
Центральной достопримечательностью, Старой Ладоги является крепость, которая была заложена в 1161 году на месте впадения реки Елена Ладожки в Волхов.
Интересно что у реки вот мы через нее сейчас переходим как бы 2 официальных названия. Елена и Ладожка
Она была стратегически важным местом, потому что это была единственная возможная гавань, где могли остановиться морские суда,
не способные плавать по порогам Волхова.
Скульптура Сокола недалеко от крепости является символом династии Рюриковичей.
Сокол также изображен на флаге Старой Ладог

Новая Ладога — город (с 1704) в России, в Волховском муниципальном районе Ленинградской области.
История же поселения начинается в 1702 году с закладки судостроительной верфи. На верфь были доставлены около 2-х тысяч
мастеров судадельного дела.
После основания в 1704 году Новой Ладоги сюда по приказу царя переехали многие жители Ладоги,
которая отныне стала именоваться Старой Ладогой и утратила статус города. Здесь же было размещено несколько полков пехоты.
В
Памятник Петру I в Новой Ладоге открыт 28 августа 2004 года в связи с празднованием 300-летия этого города, основанного Петром.
Надпись на постаменте гласит: Новой Ладоге быть. Указ Петра I 26.08.1704.» Ниже текст: «Основателю города от благодарных потомков. Единая Россия. 26.08.2004»
Бюст установлен на пересечение главной магистрали города – Николаевского проспекта
(в советское время переименованного в проспект Карла Маркса), идущего от въезда в город к древнейшему Никольскому собору,
и старого Петровского канала, представляющего в настоящее время заросшую протоку (ну в начале весны он еще не успел зарости). Памятник установлен на газоне,
рядом с берёзовой аллеей.

St Nicholas Monastery Founded in 1241 by Alexander Nevsky in Staraya Ladoga, Russia. Full Tour
According to the legend, the monastery was founded by Grand Prince St. Alexander Nevsky in
1240-1242 nearthe church of St. Nicholas (12th-13th centuries).
The monastery was lundered in the 14th and at the beginning of the 17th century. In the 18th century, it was closed by the decree of Empress Catherine II.
At the beginning of the 19th century, it was revived and restored. In Soviet times, the monastery was abolished (1935).
Since 2003, it has been experiencing a second resurrection. In the monastery, there are more than 20 monuments of federal significance: the Cathedral of St. Nicholas (13-18 centuries), the church of St. John Chrysostom (19th century), the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist, the church of St. Basil the Great, a bell tower, a holy gate, four chapels, cell and service buildings, and a hermitage.
Divine services are daily performed in the church of St. John Chrysostom. On Saturdays, service is held in the Church of the Accession of John the Baptist on Malysheva Hill, and on Saturdays - in the monastery in the chapel of St. Basil the Great.
In summer, the monastery is open from 8.00
to 19.00, in winter - from 8.00 to 18.00.

Novgorod, also known as novgorod the Great or Veliky Novgorod is one of the oldest and most important historic cities in Russia. The citadel, Kremlin, stands overlooking the Volkhov River. The first settlement days to 989 with the arrival of the first bishop of Novgorod, Ioakim Korsunianin, who built the Cathedral of the Holy Wisdom.
The first reference of the fortification on the site dates to 1044, with additional construction taking place in 1116. These were probably earthen embankments topped by a wooden palisade, replaced by stone towers and walls in 1302.
The current fortress was built between 1484 and 1490 by Muscovite builders in the wake of Grand Prince Ivan III's conquest of the city in 1478.....
