Kodaikanal is a hill station which is located in Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Its name in the Tamil language means The Gift of the Forest. Kodaikanal is referred to as the Princess of Hill stations and has a long history as a retreat and popular tourist destination.
The earliest residents of Kodaikanal were the Palaiyar tribal people. The earliest specific references to Kodaikanal and the Palani Hills are found in Tamil Sangam literature of the early Common era.[8] Modern Kodaikanal was established by American Christian missionaries and British bureaucrats in 1845, as a refuge from the high temperatures and tropical diseases of the plains.[4] In the 20th century a few elite Indians came to realise the value of this enchanting hill station and started relocating here.
Tourism has been impacted by industrial pollution issues including the closure of a mercury factory owned by Unilever's Indian subsidiary Hindustan Unilever after evidence of widespread mercury pollution. To date no proper clean-up operation has been mounted.
The economy of Kodaikanal predominantly depends on tourism. The number of tourists increased from two million in 1999 to 3.2 million in 2009. The town's infrastructure changes every year in preparation for the peak tourist season. Major roads are converted into one-way lanes to regulate the constant inflow of traffic and special police are brought in for the safety of the tourists and protection of local businesses. Hotels are often fully booked during the high season, and remain virtually empty during the off-season. Due to the rapid development of nearby cities such as Madurai, Palani and Coimbatore the town is learning to deal with year-round tourism.

1- Kodai Lake: Kodaikanal Lake is a manmade lake in the Kodaikanal city which is also known as Kodai Lake. The lake is at a distance of 3 km from the Kodai Bus stand
2: Coaker walk: One of the popular tourist spots in Kodaikanal, Coaker’s Walk is just half kilometre away from the Kodaikanal Lake.
La Saleth Church: La Saleth Church is sited up on a cliff edge outside of town. In order to reach there, you have to ascend a steep staircase which guides you to the door of this beautiful shrine.
Upper Lake view: Situated 3.2 km away from the Coakers Walk, Upper Lake View is a famous tourist attraction in Kodaikanal and one which is worth visiting on the way to Green valley viewpoint.
Dolphin Nose: Situated at a distance of 8 km from the main city of Kodaikanal, the Dolphin's Nose provides a bird's eye view of the scenic landscape of the surrounding mountainous area.
Vattakanal Falls /Pambar Falls : Vattakanal Falls situated at a distance of 3 km from the town of Kodaikanal is famous for its rich biodiversity
Green Valley View/Suicide Point: Suicide point(Green Valley View) offers a breathtaking view of the plains, deep valleys and hills of Kodai. This attraction is near to Kodaikanal Golf Club
Golf Club: Kodaikanal Golf Club is a private membership club with an 18-hole, par 71 Golf course. It is located about 6 kilometres (4 mi) southwest from the center of Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, South India at an elevation of 2,220 metres (7,280 ft).
Pillar Rocks: Located 8 Kms away from the lake, Pillar rocks constitutes of three granite boulders and each of a height of 400 feet standing shoulder to shoulder. It also makes for an interesting picnic spot. The chamber between the two pillars is called Devil's kitchen.

1:Silent valley: Silent Valley View is located in close proximity to the Pillar rock garden in Kodaikanal. The point is famous for proffering some astounding and stunning views of the Silent Valley. The Silent Valley view is another important and attractive place that should not be missed by any nature enthusiast. It is situated at a little distance from the Pillar Rock and is seen on the Berijam lake road and the breathtaking view of this valley will be soothing to the eyes.The panoramic view of this place will make the tourists to spend a lot of time watching the scenic beauty. Children visiting this place has to be taken care by their parents as the valley is very deep and will at its very best when viewed between early mornings and late afternoons.
2 Berijam lake view point: It gives an amazing view of Berijam lake from the top, if there are no clouds on the day you visit this place. Its a place very near to silent valley. A View of the most beautiful lake in South India.
3: Berijam lake: Berijam Lake is protected by Forest laws and the immensely beautiful forest. Tourists need special permission from the forest office in Kodaikanal to go there. It is better to be an early bird to get the permission, as the forest office closes by 11:30 am. Tourists are allowed to stay in Berijam till the evening. This viewpoint is 19 KMs from Kodaikkanal Lake.
4: Medicine Forest view point: This Medicine Forest has a certain species of trees whose fragrance is believed to have hallucinogenic effects
5: Caps Fly valley: A steep valley in between two mountains and the air current here lifts the objects thrown in the valley. Objects thrown here come back like the boomerang or the frisbee due to the air currents. It is fun to watch.

Kodaikanal (Tamil: [koɖaɪkkaːɳal]) is a hill station which is located in Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.[2] Its name in the Tamil language means The Gift of the Forest.[3] Kodaikanal is referred to as the Princess of Hill stations and has a long history as a retreat and tourist destination.
Kodaikanal was established in 1845 as a refuge from the high temperatures and tropical diseases of the plains.[4] Much of the local economy is based on the hospitality industry serving tourism. As of 2011, the city had a population of 36,501.
The word Kodaikanal is an amalgamation of two words: kodai and kanal. The Tamil language has at least four possible interpretations of the name Kodaikanal. By pronouncing the first syllable of Kodaikanal with a long Tamil 'O', as in koe-dei (கொடை), it means summer, whilst the final two syllables kanal (காணல்) means to see, rendering Kodaikanal as a place to see in summer. Kodaikanal is a summer forest, and it is a place that the first missionaries used as a refuge to escape the overbearing and mosquito-ridden heat of the plains – a place that they would have counted on seeing in the summer.
Kanal, in Tamil, can mean dense or closed forest. In this case, Kodai can have at least four meanings. By pronouncing Kodai with the long Tamil 'o' and short 'e', Ko-dai means the end. Kodaikanal could mean the end of the forest which makes poetic and geographical sense – Kodaikanal is at the crown of the Palani Hills and is effectively surrounded and protected by thick forests.[3]
By pronouncing Kodai with the short Tamil 'o' (as in Kodi), it means creepers or vines. Kodaikanal could mean forest of creepers or the forest of vines. The forest of creepers is thought to be the English language meaning given in 1885 during the early western habitation of the place[5] and is still accepted.[6]
By pronouncing Kodai with a short Tamil 'o', and a long 'e', it might be interpreted to mean gift, rendering Kodaikanal as gift of the forest. Keeping the short Tamil 'o' but adding a long 'a', Kodai could be understood as the Tamil word for umbrella, where Kodaikanal is a forest fashioned like a protecting umbrella.[3]
Another Tamil word for creeper or vine is valli, the honey collecting daughter of the chief of the Veddas mountain tribe. The chief and his wife prayed to the Mountain God for a girl and their prayers were answered when the chief found a newborn girl child during a hunting expedition. As she was found among creeper plants, they named her Valli and she grew up as princess of the tribe in Kurinji and became the consort of lord Murugan.[7] The romantic traditions of Murugan in Sangam literature are thus associated with the name Kodaikanal.
