The Ruhr Park is a shopping center in Bochum . It is one of the largest in Germany. As the Ruhr-Park on November 14, 1964 in the quarter Harpen was opened, it was after the Main-Taunus-Zentrum in Sulzbach the second shopping center in Germany and a novelty for the young Federal Republic.
At the beginning, the shopping center had 24,000 m² of rental space, which was partly available for large department stores and partly for smaller specialist shops. The Ruhr-Park shopping center on the approx. 254,000 m² large property in Bochum with meanwhile 125,000 m² rental space (of which 71,500 m² sales area) and an estimated goods turnover in 2013 of around 243 million euros is one of the largest shopping centers in Germany . Around 2,500 employees work in the approximately 140 shops; 4,800 free parking spaces are available to customers.
The founder of the Ruhr-Park shopping center was the investor Edward J. Roberts, who sold the center to Westdeutsche ImmobilienBank in 1978 . Since 1 October 2010, the Perella Weinberg Real Estate Fund is the owner of the Ruhr Park, which is managed by Unibail-Rodamco Germany .
The Ruhr Park is located outside the city center and has plenty of parking space. At the time of the construction of the Ruhr Park, the first pedestrian zones in the surrounding inner cities were created, which made the city area more attractive, but also more difficult to access. All this sparked fears in the retail sector, which feared lost sales through the greenfield mall at its other sites. Nevertheless, this concept is still groundbreaking for many other shopping centers in Germany.
The restaurant area Via Bartolo was opened in October 2001. 13 gastronomy concepts are arranged in a ring around a central square - with dining tables and seating groups (about 280 seats) - and are supposed to invite to a gastronomic world tour, offering dishes from different countries. The dining area is loosened up by a seasonal decoration with plants and sculptures.
After a reconstruction from 2011 to 2015, the Ruhr-Park was reopened on 4 November 2015, including the new Südmall, and now has a leasable area of 115,000 m². With the nearby motorways A 40 and A 43 , the shopping center is well connected to the road network, which contributed, for example, to the settlement of the cinema complex UCI . The PT connectors but is carried out by seven bus lines with three to the Ruhr Park around distributed stops. Of these, however, only two lines go to Bochum city center, which also perform on the way to the Ruhr Park important development functions of residential areas. This results in a correspondingly long journey time. A master thesis published in 2001 dealt with the possibilities to connect the Ruhr-Park directly to the tram network.
The landmark of the Ruhr Park is the yellow tent, built in 1985 and supported by a 42-meter-high tubular steel mast. In 2012, the yellow tent was replaced by a white one as part of the modernization of the Ruhr Park. On the northern edge is a decorated with spheres pylon (Mast 69, Annex 2610) of the Amprion .

Bochum / Germany is the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Bochum lies in the heart of the industrial Ruhr district, between the cities of Essen to the west ( ) and Dortmund to the east ( ).
The city of Bochum is usually not on a tourist itinerary. This industrial city is another example of the Ruhrpott as the area is called as a nickname with some museums showcasing the history in steel production.
We start our evening tour of the city at the train station and walk towards the city center to the north. The shops are closed so it's rather quiet there. As we get to the Bermuda triangle area, the streets get more lively. The Bermuda area is the major nightlife spot with many bars and restaurants.
Our tour ends at the Schauspielhaus Bochum.

Bochum is a city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and part of the Arnsberg region. Bochum is located in the Ruhr area and is surrounded by the cities of Herne, Castrop-Rauxel, Dortmund, Witten, Hattingen, Essen and Gelsenkirchen.
The city lies on the low rolling hills of Bochum land ridge (Bochumer Landrücken), part of the Ruhrhöhen (highest elevations) between the Ruhr and Emscher rivers at the border of the southern and northern Ruhr coal region. The highest point of the city is at Kemnader Straße (Kemnader Street) in Stiepel at 196 metres above sea level; the lowest point is 43 metres at the Blumenkamp in Hordel.
Bochum is connected to the Autobahn network by the A 40, A 43 and A 44 autobahns. In addition, Bochum has a ring road, built to expressway standards, consisting of four segments; the Donezk, Oviedo, Nordhausen and Sheffield-Ring roads. It serves as a three-quarter loop around central Bochum and begins and ends at Autobahn A40. Bochum has a central station situated on the line from Duisburg to Dortmund, connecting the city to the long-distance network of Deutsche Bahn as well as to the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network. Local service is supplied mainly by BOGESTRA, a joint venture handling transportation between the cities of Bochum and Gelsenkirchen. The Bochum Stadtbahn is a single underground line connecting the University of Bochum to Herne, and the Bochum/Gelsenkirchen tramway network is made up of several lines. As one of the few Ruhr area cities, Bochum is not directly connected with the German waterway net; the closest link is in the more northern located Herne at the Rhine-Herne Canal.
