Royal Salt Mines in Wieliczka and Bochnia, Poland - World Heritage Journeys

The Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines transport you to a mysterious world of salt beneath the earth's surface. The mines were worked continuously from the 13th century until the late 20th century, constituting one of the earliest and most important European industrial operations. There are hundreds of kilometres of galleries with underground chapels, works of art and statues carved in salt, making for a fascinating journey into the past.

Wieliczka was among the first sites inscribed on the World Heritage List in in 1978, with the nearby Bochnia Mine added to the inscription in 2013.

Wieliczka Salt Mine - Poland Best Place - Travel & Discover

The Wieliczka salt mine reaches a depth of 327 meters and is over 287 kilometres long. The rock salt is naturally grey in various shades, resembling unpolished granite rather than the white or crystalline look that many visitors may expect. In the 13th century, rock salt was discovered in Wieliczka and the first shafts were dug.

ROBERT MAKŁOWICZ POLSKA odc.78 „Beskid Wyspowy. Podziemna Bochnia.

Tym razem celem wypadu z beskidzkiej samotni będzie Bochnia, miasto lokowane wcześniej niż Kraków, słynące z jednej z najstarszych w świecie kopalń soli, dziś niezwykłej turystycznej atrakcji. Poza podziemnymi trasami zobaczymy też małopolskie, lokalne kulinaria, a w roli głównej wystąpi wpisana na listę tamtejszych produktów tradycyjnych suska sechlońska. Co to jest i jak jej używać? Wieliczka Salt Mine-Krakow -poland day trip

If you are in Krakow you can't leave out a day trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It's one of the world's oldest salt mines and an UNESCO World Heritage site. A 3 km tour takes you 135 km underground. Only 1% of this site is open to visit. Almost everything is made out of Salt. You will see different corridors and chaples with amazing statues. There is also an underground lake that ones connected this salt minte to the Bochnia salt mine.

The easiest way to get to the mine is in our opinion by bus. You can take the local busline 304 in front of the Glowny Station. And in 40 min. you can get out at the Wieliczka Kopalnia Soli stop.

Thanks for reading and watching this video. :)

The Salt Mine in Bochnia | Artistic Salt Mine in Poland

The Salt Mine in Bochnia | Artistic Salt Mine in Poland
The Bochnia Salt Mine in Bochnia, Poland is one of the oldest salt mines in the world and the oldest one in Poland. The mine was established between the 12th and 13th centuries after salt was first discovered in Bochnia, which also is consider as a beginning of salt mining at this area (year 1248), and became part of the Royal mining company zupy krakowskie Kraków salt works. The mine was closed some time after World War I. In 1981 it was declared a heritage monument. Excavated chambers, shafts and passages form an underground town, which is now open to sightseers. The mine shafts measure 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) in length at about 330–468 metres in depth below the surface, at 16 different levels.
The largest of the preserved chambers has been converted into a sanatorium. It has a specific microclimate, with a constant temperature between 14–16 °C (57–61 °F), high humidity (about 70%) and favourable ionisation of the air - saturated, at the same time, by sodium chloride and valuable microelements, like: magnesium, manganese and calcium. The mine tour ends up with a stay in the largest chamber, the Wazyn. The Wazyn Chamber is considered the heart of the mine. It is one of the biggest conserved chambers in the Bochnia mine, placed on Sienkiewicz level. Its length reaches 280m. It is situated in the middle salt deposits creating effective patterns, the so called Bochnia stripes and where the “Wazynek” restaurant, a souvenir shop, a sports field and a children's playground are located. The Mysiur Stable was created before 1771 by adapting a chamber exploited in the mid-eighteenth century. It was arranged for horses which worked at a nearby treadmill over the Wazyn shaft. In the chamber, the original wooden manger has been preserved. The site is one of the Polish National Historic Monuments, as designated October and in 2013 the mine was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

My trip to: Wawel Royal Castle | Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines | Kraków

In this video you can appreciate a little of Wawel Royal Castle, located in the middle of Kraków, Poland. As you can see, the architecture there is amazing.

I also visited the small town of Wieliczka, more specifically the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

It was declared one of the first 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Everything you see here is either carved from rock salt or made of wood.

To get to the mine, we descended about 300 feet. The mine itself is a little over 1,000 ft deep.

POLAND’S UNDERGROUND CITY OF SALT | WIELICZKA SALT MINE

Welcome to our Poland series. We are travelling all around Poland by car. But there is a plot twist we are travelling around Poland during corona, so we will see what Poland is like during this time. The Polish road trip will take us to some of the best places across Poland like Kraków, Gdańsk, Wrocław and Poznań to name but a few.

Watch our Poland series from the beginning! ▶

In this episode we check into the amazing Balthazar Design Hotel and visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
It’s a cool and unique place to visit! Located just outside of Krakow, this is a MUST VISIT in Poland. The salt mine has been around since the 14th century and is now a UNESCO site. There's a whole city of people going about their business every single day deep beneath the ground. The salt mines can have 10,000 people a day moving through them, which is why there are 500 guides and 200 maintenance staff working here. EVERYTHING IS MADE OF SALT. You will not be able to get over this fact as you make your way through the mines. There are 300 kilometres of tunnels (the same distance from Krakow to Warsaw!), 2000 chambers, many chapels, and countless intricate sculptures all made of SALT. You can lick the walls, if you don't believe it! The craziest part? What we see represents only 1% of the existing salt mine. The mine has received many famous visitors over the centuries from Chopin, Goethe, and John Paul II to dignitaries and king and queens. You walk down 380 steps to enter the mine and, thankfully, take a super fast elevator back to the surface after your tour. Find out why Poland’s underground city of salt is the best place to get drunk :D

Wieliczka Royal Salt Mines - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UNESCO World Heritage site Wieliczka salt mines are located just outside the city of Krakow, and were hugely important to Poland's economy over the centuries. The valuable salt extracted here went straight into the royal treasury, where it was used to fund infrastructure projects and foreign wars. These days, the mines are still used to extract salt, but they're also a very popular tourist attraction, featuring some fantastic underground chambers, galleries, and sculptures made entirely out of salt!

UNESCO The Polska #7 - Kopalnia soli w Bochni

#UNESCO #Bochnia #Wieliczka
