The STRANGEST LAKE in the Philippines
The Marcopper mining disaster is one of the worst mining and environmental disasters in Philippine history. It occurred on March 24, 1996, on the Philippine island of Marinduque.
A fracture in the drainage tunnel of a large pit containing leftover mine tailings led to a discharge of toxic mine waste into the Makulapnit-Boac river system and caused flash floods in areas along the river. One village, Barangay Hinapulan, was buried in six feet of muddy floodwater, causing the displacement of 400 families. Twenty other villages had to be evacuated. Drinking water was contaminated killing fish and freshwater shrimp. Large animals such as cows, pigs and sheep were overcome and killed. The flooding caused the destruction of crops and irrigation channels. Following the disaster, the Boac River was declared unusable.

HOW TO GET TO MARINDUQUE FROM MANILA:
-First, you need to take a bus in Buendia/Cubao bound for Dalahican Port Lucena, Quezon Province
-Take a ferry trip going to Balanacan Port, Marinduque
FARE: Php 390.00 (One way) + Terminal Fee Php 30.00/head
-Ferry travel time from Dalahican Port to Balanacan Port is 2 hours and 30 minutes
*Note: If you want your car (6 seater) onboard fare is Php 1,400.00 (free ticket for 4 pax).

Cebu Pacific Air flies three times weekly between Manila and Marinduque. On April 1, 2019, the inaugural flight from Manila’s NAIA Terminal 4 to Marinduque Airport was finally launched. Moriones is a Lenten tradition in the province of Marinduque. It is considered as one of the most-attended lenten traditions in the Philippines. It starts from Palm Sunday until Easter Sunday with various activities happening in different towns of Marinduque. One of the highlights of the Moriones is the Via Crusis held every Good Friday with a very dramatic re-enactment of the Passion of Christ along the streets of every town of Marinduque.
