We were shocked that this is Bulgaria! As Americans, when we talk about Eastern Europe, most people have a negative perception of the place, which can taint your expectations of a place.
But, little do they know about the beautiful nature and mountains, delicious food, rich history and monasteries, and the wonderful people of Bulgaria. In this Bulgaria vlog, we set out to hike the 7 Rila Lakes in Rila National Park and visit the stunning Rila Monastery. Along the journey, we meet wonderful people, enjoy the incredible views atop Bulgaria’s highest mountain range, and experience the best things to do in Bulgaria.

BEST BANSKO ACTIVITIES & DAY TRIPS
Bansko is Bulgaria’s premier ski resort town and it’s only about a 2 1/2 hour drive away from Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia. In this vlog, we show you 5 of the best things to do in and around Bansko.
1. BANSKO SKI

Bansko is popular for being Bulgaria’s best resort and it is easy to see why. They have a wide variety of ski slopes catering to all levels. There are plenty of shops in Bansko that offer rentals at competitive prices. We were able to get ski clothes, skis, poles and a helmet for 50 BGN. The ski shops also sell ski and snowboarding lessons. We recommend buying a gondola pass the night before you decide to go skiing to avoid waiting in line on your ski day. We paid 79 BGN for the ski lift pass. There is also a 7km ski road. It is for beginners and it takes you all the way down the mountain back to the ski center.

2. THERMAL POOLS
After a hard day of skiing and snowboarding, a visit to a thermal pool is the perfect way to relax those sore muscles. You will have plenty of options to choose from near the town of Bansko. We decided to spend a couple of hours at Izgreva. It was only a short 15 minute drive from Bansko. They have three different thermal pools with differing temperatures. The entrance price was 15 BGN, and it includes use of the 3 pools, a sun lounger, and access to the changing rooms. Along with the pools, they have a restaurant which serves food and drinks. We recommend getting their delicious cheesy potatoes.
3. RILA MONASTERY
A visit to Rila Monastery is an absolute must if you’re in the Bansko area. The monastery is a 2 hour drive from Bansko. It is one of Bulgaria’s most important historical and cultural attractions. Named after St. Ivan of Rila, it still hosts around 60 monks who can be seen practicing their faith in the corridors of the monastery. The monastery is tucked deep into the mountains in the Rila Monastery Nature Park. The complex includes the main church, a residential area, and museum. Once inside the monastery, you are able to walk around and admire the stunning views and spectacular paintings.
4. VILLA MELNIK WINERY

One of Bulgaria’s premium vineyards is also a 2 hour drive away from the town of Bansko. Villa Melnik Winery is an absolute must visit if you’re into wine. The winery provides tours and tasting sessions which we would highly recommend. As part of the tour, you can see the facilities and equipment used to make the wine as well as get a tour of their cellars. The tour is highly educational and the best part is that after the tour you get to sample some of their wines! We tasted a mix of red, white and orange wines accompanied with a cheese and meat platter.
5. SCENIC TRAIN RIDE

If scenic train rides are of interest to you, then riding on the last narrow gauge rail in Bulgaria is the perfect activity. A narrow gauge train is unique because the train tracks are half the width of a standard railroad track. The train is used mostly by the locals to commute to and from work. The entire route is 5 hours long and it averages about 25 km/h. It takes you into the mountains and showcases the best of the Bulgarian countryside. Our return tickets from Bansko to Velingrad cost around 15 BGN for 2 tickets.

Благоевград (до 1950 г. Горна Джумая) е град в България. Той е икономически, културен и образователен център на Югозападна България и административен център на едноименните област и община. Разположен е в долината на Струма и през него тече по-малката река Бистрица. Намира се на 360 m надморска височина в Благоевградската котловина между планините Рила и Влахина и е в непосредствена близост до Пирин планина.
Blagoevgrad is а town in Southwestern Bulgaria, the administrative centre of Blagoevgrad Municipality and of Blagoevgrad Province. It is the economic and cultural centre of Southwestern Bulgaria. It is located in the valley of the Struma River at the foot of the Rila Mountains, 101 kilometres south of Sofia, close to the border with North Macedonia.
Blagoevgrad features a pedestrian downtown, with preserved 19th-century architecture and numerous restaurants, cafés, coffee shops, and boutiques. It is home to two universities, the South-West University Neofit Rilski and the American University in Bulgaria. The town also hosts the Sts. Cyril and Methodius National Humanitarian High School. The former Bulgarian Men's High School of Thessaloniki moved from Thessaloniki to Blagoevgrad (then Gorna Dzhumaya) in 1913.
