Black Forest (Schwarzwald) in Southwest Germany

Schwarzwald, or in english The Black Forest is located in the southwest corner of Germany in the German federal-state of Baden-Württemberg. The Black Forest is a mountainous terrain at about 200-1500 meters above sea level, the highest point being the Feldberg at 1493 m.

This ancient forest is famous for its legends and the black fir trees that dot the landscape. While not particularly high, the mountains offer a wonderful place to go hiking or mountain biking with well-marked trails. Maps available from the tourist offices. There are a few skiing resorts as well offering average but crowded conditions.

The region is famous for its cuckoo clocks, watchmaking, skiing and tourism. There is a large high-tech light engineering industry in the region stemming from the gold-mining and watchmaking days. Almost all tourists are from Germany and Switzerland; the region's tourist industry is therefore not well equipped to deal with guests who don't speak German.

The most important destination in the Schwarzwald is called Titisee, which is a medium-sized lake with associated tourist village and hotels, with very nice views and generally very relaxed and healthy activities. From here it is a short journey to Lake Constance and the city of Konstanz, or to see the Rhein Waterfall at Neuhausen in Switzerland.

Accommodations in the main tourist areas may be cheaper than many of the quaint smaller towns and villages. For a nice hut at a reasonable price, look for a privately-operated Gasthaus, which can be found in villages throughout the area. There are many pleasant surprises waiting, often with excellent home-cooked food and special service, often provided by the family living there for many generations.

The Black Forest is a large forested mountain range in the state of Baden-Württemberg in south-west of Germany.
It is bounded by the Rhine valley to the west and south.
Its highest peak is the Feldberg with an elevation of 1,493 metres.
The region is roughly oblong in shape with a length of 160 kilometres and breadth of up to 50 kilometres.
The main industry of the Black Forest is tourism. Black Forest Tourism assesses that there are around 140,000 direct full-time jobs in the tourist sector and around 34.8 million tourist overnight stays in 2009.
In spring, summer and autumn an extensive network of hiking trails and mountain bike routes enable different groups of people to use the natural region.
In winter, of course, it is the various types of winter sport that come to the fore.
There are facilities for both downhill and Nordic skiing in many places.
The most heavily frequented tourist destinations and resorts in the Black Forest are the Titisee and the Schluchsee.
Both lakes offer opportunities for water sports like diving and windsurfing.
From Freiburg these lakes may be reached on the B 31 through the Höllental, via the Hirschsprung monument located at the narrowest point in the valley, and the Oswald Chapel below the Ravenna Gorge.
One oft-visited town is Baden-Baden with its thermal baths and festival hall.
Other thermal baths are found in the spa resorts of Badenweiler, Bad Herrenalb, Bad Wildbad, Bad Krozingen, Bad Liebenzell and Bad Bellingen.
Noted for their fine interiors are the former monastery of St. Blasien as well as the abbeys of Sankt Trudpert, St. Peter and St. Märgen.
Alpirsbach Abbey and the ruined Hirsau Abbey were built of red sandstone in the Hirsau style.
The Murg valley, the Kinzig valley, the Triberg Waterfalls and the Open Air Museum at Vogtsbauernhof are also very popular.
There are well known winter sports areas around the Feldberg, near Todtnau with its FIS downhill ski run of Fahler Loch and in Hinterzarten, a centre and talent forge for German ski jumpers.
In the Northern Black Forest the winter sports areas are concentrated along the Black Forest High Road and on the ridge between the Murg and Enz rivers around Kaltenbronn.
The height differences in the mountains are used in many places for hang gliding and paragliding.

GERMANY: Black Forest, sights & scenery 4K

The Black Forest (German: Schwarzwald) is a large forested mountain range in south-west Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, bounded by the Rhine valley to the west and south and close to the borders with France and Switzerland. It is the source of the Danube and Neckar rivers. Historically, the area was known for forestry and the mining of ore deposits, but tourism has now become the primary industry.

The Hexenloch Mill (German: Hexenlochmühle), formerly the Dreistegen Mill (Dreistegenmühle), lies in the ravine-like Hexenloch in the Black Forest in Germany between St. Märgen and Furtwangen in the parish of Furtwangen-Neukirch. It was built in 1825 and has been in the same family since 1839. It is the only mill in the Black Forest with two water wheels. The mill houses a restaurant with an outdoor terrace and shops that offer Black Forest specialties and souvenirs.

Stöcklewaldturm, a observation tower in Black Forest, was built in 1894 on the Stöcklewald hill (1068 m above sea level) near Furtwangen-Rohrbach. The viewing platform at a height of 25m offers a beautiful all-round view over the central Black Forest to the Feldberg, and on nice days to the Swiss Alps.

The Triberg Waterfalls are located near Triberg in Baden-Württemberg. With a descent of 163 m, it is one of the highest waterfalls in Germany and a landmark in the Black Forest region.

Sankt Georgen im Schwarzwald is a town in Southwestern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is a popular destination for a holiday in the Black Forest.

Villingen (-Schwenningen) lies on the eastern edge of the Black Forest about 700 m (2,300 ft) above sea level. As part of the Baden-Württemberg territorial reform of 1972, Villingen and Schwenningen were merged with a number of surrounding villages to form the city of Villingen-Schwenningen. Nevertheless, the two halves of the city are separated by a plateau and remain distinct. Villingen is a former part of Baden, while Schwenningen is a former part of Württemberg.

The Brend observation tower (German: Brendturm) in Furtwangen was built in 1905 on the Brend hill (1149 m above sea level) near Furtwangen. The tower is round and made of granite blocks, and approximately 17 meter high.

St. Martin’s Chapel (German: Martinskapelle) stands at an elevation of 1,085 metres above sea level (NHN) at the upper end of the Katzensteig valley on the territory of Furtwangen just above the hydrological source of the river Danube.

The river Danube (German: Donau) is conventionally taken to be formed by the confluence of the two streams Brigach and Breg just east of Donaueschingen. The source of the Donaubach, which flows into the Danube, in Donaueschingen is often referred to as the source of the Danube (Donauquelle). Hydrologically, the source of the Danube is the source of the Breg as the larger of the two formative streams (with its spring at a higher altitude and - at the confluence - not only being 5 km longer but also having a higher amount of water discharge) which rises near Furtwangen.

CUCKOO CLOCKS

It is thought that much of its development and evolution was made in the Black Forest, the region where the cuckoo clock was popularized and from where it was exported to the rest of the world, becoming world-famous from the mid-1850s on.

The German Clock Road (German: Deutsche Uhrenstraße) or German Clock Route is a holiday route that runs from the Central Black Forest through the Southern Black Forest to the Baar region and thus links the centres of Black Forest clock manufacturing. It is about 320 kilometres long.

Hornberg (-Niederwasser): opened in 1977, the Hornberger Uhrenspiele (giant cuckoo clock) in 1995.

Schonach: FIRST world largest cuckoo clock, completed in 1980.

Triberg: new 'House of 1000 Clocks' opened in 1984, the Tribear giant clockwork in 2006.

and here are TOP 5 FACTS about the mysterious forest on the Swiss border of Germany

Fact number 1:

The name Black Forest comes from the general dark color of the numerous pine trees that grow in this region
The forest has suffered serious damage from acid rain and it is only a fraction of the size it used to be sine 1999; however, the storm Lothar knocked down hundreds of acres of mountaintops, leaving some of the high peaks and scenic hills bare, with only primary growth shrubs and young fir trees.

Fact number 2 : The Black Forest is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg,
southwest Germany,
It stretches from the beautiful town of Baden-Baden all the way to the Swiss border
And it is bounded by the Valley of the Rhine River from the western and southern sides,
The region is almost a 100 miles long and 40 miles wide.

Fact number 3:

Fact number 4:

The region is very rural and a big part of it is dominated by woods.
Forests cover almost 60% of the land.
Charming valleys, lakes l, creeks, and rivers combined all together to create magnificent sights wherever you look.

- [ ] Fact number 5:

The most known and touristic natural lake in the Black Forest, is lake Titisee,
It stretches for some 2 kilometers or (over 1 mile). It is one of the most famous places for tourists in the Black Forest.
nonetheless if you ask any local about the most beautiful lake, the answer is clearly. lake Schluchsee
the largest lake in the Black Forest is 7.3 km long and 1.4 km wide, perched at a height of 930 meters or (3,050 feets) above sea level in the southern part of the Black Forest
lake Schluchsee with it’s crystal clear water considered in the summer time the best place to engage in a number of water sports as well as swimming,
Hiking along the lake or boating in its calm surface while enjoying it’s mesmerizing panoramic views

Bonus fact

Legends!
Even at first glance, the Black Forest seems mysterious. Very dense, dark and atmospheric – it looks like a place where strange things might happen.
That’s why many legends have been told, about sorcerers, wizards, dwarves, werewolves, and witches living in the Forest.

Many famous German tales are believed to be set there, including the famous story of Hansel and Gretel.
When you walk amongst the woods, soak up the magical atmosphere and look around carefully – you might see something even more magical than the old trees and ruins.

The hiking trail is one of my favorite hikes in Germany. The trail starts low in the Wisental valley and meanders up through magical Black Forest farms and magical grazes.
We stay on the Westweg, a long distance trail, a bit it spans the whole Black Forest and is with a visit. It as well goes over the Mountain. Going further up your getting amazing views all over Switzerland, parts of Austria, Germany and the Rhine valley as well as the Vogese mountain range in France. It is a Must-visit place in south Germany in my opinion.
Not far away there are as well many great other places to visit like the Tittisee and the Feldberg as well as St. Blasien a famous church. The whole region is perfect for Black Forest travel and is not far from Freiburg or Basel.
