The town of Bisbee, Arizona has such a rich history of mining, but what is it like today? We take a quick trip through this small town to see where history and modern-day collide.
Bisbee, Arizona came on the map around 1877 when U.S. army scouts were searching for a group of Apache in the area. What they stumbled upon was water and indications of rich minerals in the hills of the area.
What followed was prospectors coming to stake out claims and soon Bisbee was known as the Queen of the Copper Camps. Millions of gold and copper, along with silver, lead, and zinc, were pulled from the ground and Bisbee flourished.
The Queen Mine remains open to visitors providing tours 1500 feet deep into its mine tunnels offering a unique experience into what mining was like and involved during its height.
For even more insight into mining and life for citizens in Bisbee Arizona during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum provides numerous displays, artifacts, and exhibits. The Smithsonian-affiliated museum resides in one of the oldest buildings in Bisbee if the exhibits weren't enough history for you.
And for those wanting to immerse themselves where the history began, the Inn at Castle Rock ( has 14 uniquely themed rooms available for visitors to the town of Bisbee. Within the inn is a well rumored to be the site where mining into the rock for the rich minerals began. This quirky inn offers plenty of hospitality and old charm for guests.
Outside of history, Bisbee is a town with a thriving art community with plenty of shopping and dining. You really can find it all in Bisbee!

Ep. 144: Bisbee, Arizona | RV travel camping 4x4
Less than 8 miles from the Mexican border, Bisbee was founded as a copper, gold, and silver mining town in 1880, and named in honor of Judge DeWitt Bisbee, one of the financial backers of the adjacent Copper Queen Mine. Because its plan was laid out to a pedestrian scale before the automobile, Old Bisbee is compact and walkable, and not a place to drive your RV. The town's hilly terrain is exemplified by the old four-story high school; each floor has a ground-level entrance.
Mining in the Mule Mountains proved quite successful; in the early 20th century the population of Bisbee soared to more than 9,000. In 1917, open-pit mining was successfully introduced to meet the copper demand during World War I. Mining operations in Bisbee ceased in 1975, and heritage tourism replaced mining as Bisbee's economic driver. Artist Stephen Hutchison and his wife Marcia purchased the Copper Queen Hotel,as well as other buildings in the downtown area. Actor John Wayne was a frequent visitor to Bisbee and the Copper Queen. He befriended Hutchison and eventually partnered with developer Ed Smart in his real estate ventures. Bisbee became a haven for artists and hippies fleeing the larger cities of Arizona and California. Today, the historic city of Bisbee is known as Old Bisbee and is home to a thriving downtown cultural scene.
For our visit to Bisbee, we're still boondocking away from everyone else along Forest Road 687 within Arizona's Coronado National Forest, at the foot of the Dragoon Mountains just north of Tombstone. Bisbee is a city in and the county seat of Cochise County in southeastern Arizona, United States. It is 92 miles (148 km) southeast of Tucson and 11 miles (18 km) north of the Mexican border. According to the 2020 census, the population of the town was 4,923, down from 5,575 in the 2010 census.

⛏ Also known as the Copper City, Bisbee is a former mining town turned home to artists, local business owners, and lots of fun & weird folks! Tucked away in a canyon of southeast AZ near the Mexico border, Bisbee sits at over 5,000 ft elevation. Maybe the coolest part about this place, besides its incredible beauty, is that every business is locally owned. You won’t find corporate America here!
???? We had a blast exploring the shops, smashing great food and let’s not forget visiting Arizona’s smallest bar (Room 4 Bar) & Arizona’s longest operating bar (St. Elmo). Highly recommend spending time in Bisbee! Love this place!
