RÜDESHEIM Germany and Castles Middle Rhine Valley [Travel Guide]

Welcome to one of Germany’s most unique treasures: The Rhine Gorge (upper middle Rhine valley)! It is a landscape of beautiful villages, vineyards and castles that is considered UNESCO World Heritage! It is a culturally and historically very interesting region to visit in Germany. Well-known is the town of Rüdesheim that is admired for its wines, beautiful houses and famous Drosselgasse. The Drosselgasse is a very picturesque alley that is considered the most popular spot in the town of Rüdesheim. The entire region is famous for its wines: Federweisser, Riesling and Icewine. A must is a visit to the vineyards above Rüdesheim; a great location for going on a hike. Just at the top of the hills is this massive monument called Niederwalddenkmal. It was built after the formation of the German empire. From the Niederwalddenkmal, you may also enjoy a brilliant view over Rüdesheim, the Rine and the surrounding vineyards. It is definitely worth to stay for a few days in this region as there are plenty of castles on the left and righten shore of the river Rhine. There are roughly 30 castles, thus plenty of medieval sites to visit! Worth to see are the castles Burg Sooneck, Rheinstein, Pfalzgrafenstein and Rheinfels. The latter is quite a large castle just at the top of this beautiful village St. Goar. It is perfect to just combine both: first seeing the castle Burg Rheinfels and then roam around the village’s alleys. St. Goar is considered quite less-touristy, but is a beautiful traditional German village. All in all, despite quite historic, this region is not overly touristy, certainly also because there are plenty of castles to visit!

==========================================

The Rhine Gorge is a popular name for the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a 65 km section of the Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen in Germany.
It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in June 2002 for a unique combination of geological, historical, cultural and industrial reasons.
The region's rocks were laid down in the Devonian period and are known as Rhenish Facies.
This is a fossil-bearing sedimentary rock type consisting mainly of slate.
The rocks underwent considerable folding during the Carboniferous period.
The gorge was carved out during a much more recent uplift to leave the river contained within steep walls 200 m high, the most famous feature being the Loreley.
The gorge produces its own microclimate and has acted as a corridor for species not otherwise found in the region.
Its slopes have long been terraced for agriculture, in particular viticulture which has good conditions on south-facing slopes.
Most of the vineyards belong to the wine region Mittelrhein, but the southernmost parts of the Rhine Gorge fall in Rheingau and Nahe.
The river has been an important trade route into central Europe since prehistoric times and a string of small settlements has grown up along the banks.
Constrained in size, many of these old towns retain a historic feel today.
With increasing wealth, many castles appeared and the valley became a core region of the Holy Roman Empire.
It was at the centre of the Thirty Years' War, which left many of the castles in ruins, a particular attraction for today's cruise ships which follow the river.
At one time forming a border of France, in the 19th Century the valley became part of Prussia and its landscape became the quintessential image of Germany.
This part of the Rhine features strongly in folklore, such as a legendary castle on the Rhine being the setting for the opera Götterdämmerung.
The annual Rhine in Flames festivals include spectacular firework displays at Sankt Goar in September and Koblenz in August, the best view being from one of a convoy of boats.

Germany - Places to Visit! Bingen

Bingen am Rhein is located only 40 minutes from Frankfurt and is right across the river from Rudesheim.

BINGEN AM RHEIN GERMANY

Bingen am Rhein is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

The settlement's original name was Bingium, a Celtic word that may have meant hole in the rock,[2][citation needed] a description of the shoal behind the Mäuseturm, known as the Binger Loch. Bingen was the starting point for the Via Ausonia, a Roman military road that linked the town with Trier. Bingen is well known for, among other things, the story about the Mouse Tower, in which Bishop of Hatto I of Mainz was allegedly eaten by mice. It was also the birthplace of Saint Hildegard von Bingen, an important polymath, abbess, mystic and musician, one of the most influential medieval composers and one of the earliest Western composers whose music is widely preserved and performed. Bingen am Rhein was also the birthplace of the celebrated poet Stefan George, along with many other influential figures.

Bingen is situated just southeast of the Rhine knee by the Bingen Forest (Binger Wald – actually a low mountain range), which rises west of the town. Rising to the north on the other side of the Rhine is the Rheingau range, the Taunus's southwesternmost outcrop. In Bingen the river Nahe empties into the Rhine Gorge. Bingen forms the southern limit of the UNESCO Rhine Gorge World Heritage Site. The Rochusberg (mountain) is nearly completely surrounded by the town site.

Even before the Romans came, people lived here, because the location favoured transport, being at the confluence of the Nahe and Rhine Rivers, and the Rhine's entry into the gorge. The first settlement seems to have been a Celtic (Gaulish) settlement by the name of Binge – meaning rift. In the early first century AD, Roman troops were stationed in Bingen on the Rhine Valley Road, and rendered the local name as Bingium in Latin. There the Romans erected a wooden bridge across the Nahe and constructed a bridgehead castrum. A Roman Mithraic monument, which included a mutilated sculpture representing the nativity of Mithra from a rock, was discovered in Bingen; one of its inscriptions is dated 236.
The presbyter Aetherius of Bingen founded sometime between 335 and 360 a firmly Christian community. Bearing witness to this time is Aetherius's gravestone, which can still be seen in Saint Martin's Basilica.[4][5] After the fall of the Limes, the town became a Frankish royal estate and passed in 983 by the Donation of Verona from Otto II to Archbishop Willigis of Mainz.[6] Under Otto III the Binger Kammerforst (forest) came into being. Under Willigis, some way up the river Nahe, the stone Drususbrücke (bridge) was built.[7]

The inhabitants of Bingen strove time and again for independence, which led in 1165 through disputes between the Archbishop of Mainz and the Emperor to destruction. In the 13th century, Bingen was a member of the Rhenish League of Towns. The building of Klopp Castle (Burg Klopp) in the mid 13th century could well be seen as being tied in with this development. A last attempt was the town's unsuccessful participation in the German Peasants' War in 1525. From the Archbishop the Cathedral Chapter of Mainz acquired the town in two halves in 1424 and 1438. Until the late 18th century Bingen remained under its administration. Like many towns in the valley, Bingen suffered several town fires and wars.

From 1792 to 1813, the town was, as part of the département of Mont-Tonnerre (or Donnersberg – both names meaning Thunder Mountain), French after French Revolutionary troops had occupied the Rhine's left bank. In 1816, after the Congress of Vienna, the town passed to the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt while today's outlying centre of Bingerbrück went to Prussia's Rhine Province, making Bingen a border town until 1871, when the German Empire was founded.

On 7 June 1969, the formerly Prussian[8] municipality of Bingerbrück was amalgamated. On 22 April 1972 came Dromersheim's and Sponsheim's amalgamation with Bingen. The epithet am Rhein has been borne since 1 July 1982.[9]

For the State Garden Show in 2008 in Bingen, the Rhineside areas in the town underwent extensive modernization.

Benjamin of Tudela mentioned a Jewish community in Bingen in the mid-12th century. Christian inhabitants attacked the small Jewish quarter on Rosh Hashanah in 1198 or 1199, and the Jews were driven from the city. Jews again lived in Bingen as moneylenders in the middle of the 13th century under the jurisdiction of the archbishop of Mainz. In 1343, French Jews settled in Bingen. In 1405, the archbishop declared a moratorium on one-fifth of the debts owed to Jews by Christians, and subsequently the archbishops repeatedly extorted large sums. Noted rabbis who taught in the small community included Seligmann Oppenheim, who convened the Council of Bingen (1455–56) in an unsuccessful attempt to establish his authority over the whole of Rhineland Jewry. After the proposal was opposed by Moses Minz, the matter was referred to Isaac Isserlein, who rejected the project.

A tour of Germany's Mittelrhein from Bingen to Oberwesel - discovering the Upper Middle Rhine Valley

Watch this video @winekellertravel to discover what there is to see and experience in the beautiful Upper Middle Rhine Valley, from Bingen am Rhein in the south to the lovely medieval town of Oberwesel. The Romantic Rhine Gorge - a Unesco World Heritage Site - a steep, narrow valley where ancient castles tower over mediaeval villages and impossibly steep, terraced vineyards , with the highest concentration of castles compared to anywhere else in the world.

The Mittelrhein wine region:
The Mittelrhein wine region comprises about 470 hectares of vineyards, running either side of the River Rhine, the most important of which are located around the popular wine towns of Bacharach and Boppard. Just upstream from Bacharach, there are also some excellent vineyard sites around Oberwesel.
Approximately three-quarters of Mittelrhein vineyards are planted with Riesling, producing some excellent and well-regarded wines. This small German wine region also produces some high quality red wines, in particular Pinot noir - or Spätburgunder.

Our Upper Middle Rhine Valley tour route:
Join us as we journey up the Rhine, starting by car from Rüdesheim am Rhein and its opposite neighbour Bingen, then continuing into Mittlerhein via the right side of the river, up as far as the town of Lorch. Driving on this side of the Rhine offers superb views to the many castles on the other side.
At Lorch we switched transport, parking the car and getting on our bikes, from where we took the Rhine ferry across to Niederheimbach. From here we cycled on the left bank of the Rhine, through Bacharach and on to Oberwesel, where we turned round and took the Rhine ferry across to Kaub. From Kaub we then cycled back to Lorch.
Follow our journey and see what we discovered - anf of course we visited a couple of excellent wineries along the way and enjoyed some wine tasting!
