Marburg, Germany in Snow 4K - A unique fairytale medieval town in Germany

Today's tour is in Marburg, Germany. Marburg is, quite literally, a fairy-tale town. The Brothers Grimm studied here from 1802-06, and were so enchanted by the town’s medieval flair, cobbled alleys, stunning architecture and lush countryside, that they weaved elements of this town in their famous fairy tales. Painter Otto Ubbelohde also drew inspiration from this town while working on his illustrations for the Grimm fairy tales. Marburg is an important stop in Germany’s Fairy Tale Route, and offers several faity-tale-themed tours to visitors.

Originally, Marburg served as the capital of the landgraviate of Hessen-Marburg since 1222. The town developed at the crossroads of two important trade routes, linking Cologne to Prague and the North Sea to the Alps. The town originated in the early 9th century. Join us as we stroll through Marburg’s old town and we walk up to the Lutheran parish church (Saint Mary's Church) and Marburg’s castle, the Landgrafenschloss.

Marburg: A Beautiful German fairy-tale town || Walking Tour ????‍♀️

Marburg is one of the smaller towns in Hesse, Germany. If you want to find out about fairy tales, Marburg and the surrounding area are the right places to go. Even the Brothers Grimm were impressed by the medieval look of our university city, with its old half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, steep steps, romantic market, and impressive Castle of the Landgrave. Follow in the footsteps of the Brothers Grimm as you walk through the magical city of Marburg. During their student days between 1802 and 1806, this fairy-tale backdrop inspired Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm when they came up with ideas for Children's and Household Tales.

The main places to go and things to do in Marburg are all around Marktplatz, a square with cafes, restaurants, and small shops. The Marburg Landgrave Castle with its cultural history museum is particularly worth a visit. Along with the Elisabeth Church, it is one of the most important buildings in Marburg. From Marktplatz, you can also go to the Marburg castle, although it is a steep climb up. In the area of the castle, though, you can find one red shoe that represents Aschenputtel (Cinderella). The castle is also a museum, and since it's at the top of Marburg, you'll be able to see a wide view.
While traveling to Marburg don't forget to visit the Philipps University of Marburg. The Philipps University of Marburg (also known as the Alma Mater Philippina) comprises 16 departments with facilities spread across the city of Marburg. It was founded in 1527 by Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous as a Protestant university, making it the oldest university in Hesse.

Winter at Marburg's Landgrafen Palace: Amazing Views of the Castle ????

The Marburger Schloss (or Marburg castle), also known as Landgrafenschloss Marburg, is a castle in Marburg, Hesse, Germany, located on top of Schlossberg. It was built as a fort in the 11th century and became the Landgraviate of Hesse's first residence. The building is used as a museum since 1981, and as an event venue. It is located on the top of the 287-meter hill called Schlossberg.

History
Marburg Castle was built in the 11th century as a fort. Later, it became the Landgraviate of Hesse's (HRE) residence, a principality of the Holy Roman Empire. The castle was used by his brother after Landgraviate of Hesse died. However, Sophie of Brabant, Landgraviate's daughter, successfully won the castle for her son Henry.

The Marburg Colloquy, a meeting focusing on solving disputes between Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli over the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, was held in the Marburg castle in 1529. The information for the in-between history of the castle is unclear.

Marburg was the center of the uprising in 1806 and 1810 against the French. It is believed that the Marburg Castle was partially destroyed during that time. It is also believed that the castle was once used as a prison.

Now, the castle is operated as a well-organized museum filled with some German historical gems. Several displays from the 11th century onwards are there to explore. If you are visiting Marburg, don't forget to visit this beautiful castle.

Architecture
The first structure of Marburg Castle was constructed of wood. Around the 11th century, it was transformed into a stone building. Later, a residential castle tower was added to it. It also included a square kept protected by circular stone walls. A lot of construction work has taken place in the castle ever since.

The latest structure of the castle consists of one of the most beautiful secular Gothic halls in Germany, a castle chapel built in 1288, and a multicolor interior design. The Prince's hall of the castle is decorated with a precious relic that reflects the biblical story of the Prodigal son. The walls of the castle are all intact, and only some of the moat structure stands there.

You will find some religious art from the 12th century onwards on the first floor. The second floor includes the items further along the time, like shields and armor worn by knights. The third floor has all the furniture, clothing, and art pieces from the 11th century focusing on Church Art, Bourgeois living, and State Rulership themes. You can explore all the floors of the castle museum via stairs or lift.

The Park around Marburg Castle includes winding store paths and steep stairs. The ruins of ancient fortifications and religious buildings are also found on the castle's land. The view from the castle is breathtaking, and you can see the entire town from its top.

Note: Some rooms inside Marburg Castle might be under construction, so you may not be able to access them. Other than that, everything about Marburg Castle's interior and exterior is magical.

Beautiful Day in Marburg

Marburg is a city in the state of Hesse, Germany, on the River Lahn. It is the main town of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district.

Architecturally Marburg is famous both for its medieval churches and for its castle. In particular the Elisabethkirche one of the two or three first purely Gothic churches north of the Alps outside of France is an archetype of Gothic architecture in Germany.

More important, however, is Marburg's city as such, an unspoilt, spire-dominated, castle-crowned Gothic/Renaissance city on a hill, intact because Marburg was an extreme backwater between 1600 and 1850. Unlike, for example, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Marburg regained some of its importance in later centuries, so it is not a museum village but rather a student-dominated university town.

Much of the physical attractiveness of Marburg today is the legacy of the legendary Lord Mayor Dr. Hanno Drechsler (in office 1970-1992), who promoted urban renewal and the restoration, for the first time, by object and not by area; i.e., areas were not pulled down but rather buildings restored. Thus, at a time when other cities were still pulling down medieval quarters, Marburg already protected its unique heritage. Marburg also had one of the first pedestrian zones in Germany. Marburg's Altstadtsanierung (since 1972) has received many awards and prizes.
