श्रावस्ती प्राचीन भारत के कौशल राज्य की दूसरी राजधानी थी। यहाँ महात्मा बुद्ध ने कई वर्ष तक वास करा। यह आधुनिक उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य के श्रावस्ती ज़िले में राप्ती नदी के किनारे है, और नेपाल की सीमा के समीप है। यह बौद्ध धर्म के सबसे पवित्र तीर्थस्थलों में से एक है।
बौद्ध काल के साहित्य में श्रावस्ति का वर्णन अनेकानेक बार आया है और भगवान बुद्ध ने यहाँ के जेतवन में अनेक चातुर्मास व्यतीत किये थे। जैन धर्म के प्रवर्तक महावीर ने भी श्रावस्ति में विहार किया था। चीनी यात्री फाहियान 5वीं सदी ई॰ में भारत आया था।
श्रावस्ती' उत्तर प्रदेश के प्रसिद्ध ऐतिहासिक पर्यटन स्थलों में से एक है। बौद्ध एवं जैन तीर्थ स्थानों के लिए श्रावस्ती प्रसिद्ध है। यहाँ के उत्खनन से पुरातत्त्व महत्त्व की कई वस्तुएँ मिली हैं। प्राचीन काल से ही रामायण, महाभारत तथा जैन, बौद्ध साहित्य आदि में अनेक उल्लेख।

श्रावस्ती जिला, बौद्ध तीर्थ स्थल की वजह से पूरे विश्व में जाना जाता है. दोस्तों बौद्ध ग्रन्थों के अनुसार सहेट में जेतवन है जहाँ कई बौद्ध मठ हैं इसके अलावा यहीं पास में भगवान बुद्ध की तपोस्थली भी है जहाँ भगवान बुद्ध ने १४ साल तपस्या की थी और पूरी दुनिया को शांति और अहिंसा का संदेश दिया था. यहीं पर एक विपश्यना मेडिटेशन सेंटर भी है जहाँ १० दिन का फ्री मेडिटेशन कोर्स भी कराया जाता है। दोस्तों यहाँ श्रीलंका, म्यांमार, थाईलैंड, चीन, जापान, वर्मा, तिब्बत, भूटान से अनेकों buddhist यहाँ हर महीने आते हैं। यहाँ कई प्राचीन बौद्ध स्तूप है। यहीं पास महेट में अंगुलिमाल की गुफा और जैन धर्म के भगवान श्री 1008 संभवनाथ की जन्मस्थली भी है. महेट में दो स्तूप हैं जिसका नाम है कच्ची कुटी और पक्की कुटी पक्की कुटी में ही अंगुलिमाल गुफा है.
Shravasti is famous all over the world due to Buddhist pilgrimage site. Many Buddhist monasteries, temples of Lord Buddha have been built here. Lord Buddha meditated for 14 years and gave the message of peace and non-violence to the whole world. There is also a Vipassana Meditation Center where a 10-day free meditation course is also conducted. Friends, many buddhist from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, China, Japan, Varma, Tibet, Bhutan come here every month. There are many ancient Buddhist stupas here. It is also close to the cave of Angulimal in Mahet and the birthplace of Lord Shri 1008 Sambhavnath of Jainism. There are two stupas in Mahet, named Kachhi Kuti and Pakki Kuti, Angulimal Cave is located in Pakki Kuti itself.

24 वर्षा वास भगवान् बुद्ध ने श्रावस्ती में ही किया था और श्रावस्ती के सहेट जेतवन में स्थित (BODHI tree) के नीचे बैठकर ध्यान किया था यहीं पर (Gandh Kuti) भी है जहाँ भगवान् बुद्ध विश्राम करते थे।
श्रावस्ती में कई मंदिर मठ है जहाँ जाने से एक अलग तरह का अनुभव होता है और मन को शान्ति मिलती है।

सोन पथरी की यात्रा, सिरसिया, श्रावस्ती Sonpathri - A Complete tour
अगर आप बहराइच के आसपास रहते हैं तो आपको पहले भिनगा जाना होगा, इसके बाद भिनगा से सिरसिया और वहां से तकरीबन 10 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है सोनपथरी।
कहा जाता है कि यह आश्रम प्रसिद्ध संत सिद्धनाथ जी की तपोभूमि है। किवंदती है कि वह दिव्य और अलौकिक शक्तियों वाले थे। यहीं स्थित है वनदेवी। यह जगह काफी रहस्यमयी मानी जाती है। कहा जाता है कि यहां आज भी लोगों को रात में आसमान में तैरते हुए दीपक दिखाई देते हैं। हालांकि भोर होते ही ये कहां चले जाते हैं किसी को कुछ नहीं पता।
सोनपथरी आश्रम के पास ही प्रकृति की खूबसूरत वादिया हैं और हिमालय पर्वत भी यहां से नजर आता है। इसके अलावा कहा जाता है कि यहां मांगी गई मुराद जरूर पूरी होती है।
