Ep. 7 · Chiemsee & Kampenwand · Camping and hiking in the most popular region of Bavaria
The lake we are camping at is called Chiemsee, and it is the largest lake in Bavaria. I have been here often and know many good places, so just ask if you want to know anything!
Kampenwand is the name of a big rock formation on top of a mountain with two peaks. It is a popular destination for tourists and families, because you can go up there by lift (gondola). The gondola departs in Aschau im Chiemgau, a small village at the foot of the Lower Alps.
Hiking the Alps in Bavaria
All of these mountains are considered small by German and Swiss standards, because they are below 2000 m. I primarily hike here because it is all accessible by public transport, i.e. 1-2 hours by train from Munich. Or about the same time by car.
Kampenwand · 1669 m
The Kampenwand is best accessible from Aschau or Bernau. (= slightly longer but more interesting trail with fewer paved roads, also steeper - recommend!) It's absolutely doable in 4 hours. We just took so long because I was filming and we took a few breaks.
Our hiking stroller
We use the Hike Kid, which is a special hiking stroller made in the Munich area. Just google it. I have no idea what is going on with that company, they don't seem to sell them online anymore, but they are still being produced, I'm pretty sure. I would not go up there with a normal stroller. I've seen people do that and they did not look happy (even on gravel/dirt roads this is pretty annoying, because they are so narrow).
Camping around the Lake · Chiemsee Camping (don't do it if you have a choice)
There are a bunch of camp grounds in the area. We went to Panorama Camping. I can honestly not whole-heartedly recommend ANY German camp grounds, because most of them are just crap. They are either icy cold in the off-season or crowded AF in the main season. German camping ground owners also seem to love all these ugly_ss trailers. It basically always looks like a trailer park blocking a nice view. In this case as well. The camp site for the tents was really sh_tty. Next to the toilets, so quite literally. Loud (some weird boat noises going on right next to it) and no view to the lake (the name of the place is literally Panorama Camping but it should be Panorama only for people with a trailer). It's really unfair in my opinion, because tents don't block the view and there would be space for everyone. In my opinion, this is just a weird German thing. On camp grounds in other countries, you get deluxe spots both with a trailer and a tent. I don't think trailers are very sustainable and I kind of get mad when I see this. From my experience, I can't really recommend anything to you. I would get an AirBnB. In Aschau there is also a nice designer tiny house facilty called berge which is quite expensive but worth it for an extended weekend.

Bernau am Chiemsee liegt im Südosten Bayerns, am Fuße der Chiemgauer Alpen und bietet einen sehr hohen Freizeitwert. Durch die besondere Lage direkt am See und an den Bergen, bietet der Ort eine Vielzahl an Freizeitmöglichkeiten: Wandern, Radfahren, Mountainbiken oder Wassersportarten, wie z.B. die Trendsportart Stand-Up-Paddling sind im Sommer die beliebtesten Freizeitaktivitäten während des Urlaubes am Chiemsee. Im Winter stehen den Gästen je nach Schneelage Langlaufloipen zur Verfügung. Die nahegelegenen Skigebiete runden den Winterurlaub in Bernau ab.
Durch die verkehrsgünstige Lage an der Autobahn A8 (München-Salzburg) und an der Bahnlinie München-Salzburg ist eine unbeschwerte Anreise ebenfalls möglich.

Chiemsee is a lake in Bavaria, Germany. It is the largest lake in Germany and the third-largest lake in Central Europe. Chiemsee is located in the Alps, about 25 kilometers south of Salzburg, Austria. The lake has a surface area of 81.6 square kilometers and an average depth of 74 meters. The deepest point of the lake is 125 meters.
Chiemsee is home to 13 islands, the largest of which are Herreninsel, Fraueninsel, and Krautinsel. Herreninsel is home to Herrenchiemsee Palace, a replica of Versailles Palace in France. Fraueninsel is home to a Benedictine monastery. Krautinsel is a public island.

Chiemsee in the light of the winter sun - boat trip to Fraueninsel and Herreninsel
The Chiemsee, the Bavarian Sea, is beautifully situated in front of the Chiemgau mountains. With a size of almost 80 km², it is the largest lake in Bavaria and the third largest lake in Germany. On a freezing cold winter's day we set off by ship to the Chiemsee Islands.
We start in Bernau. The climatic health resort is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Chiemsee, at the foot of the Chiemgau Alps. After the Second World War, the American army turned the rest house on the lake built by the National Socialists into the Lake Hotel, a recreation center for American soldiers stationed in Germany and their families. The hotel was closed in 2003, part of the site is used today used by a spa clinic. On our walk along the lake we come across the old American jetty, now rotten and overgrown.
The Chiemsee shipping does not operate from Bernau in winter. So we have to drive a few kilometers further to Prien. The legendary steam tram from 1887 snorts and whistles from Prien train station to the port of Prien/Stock up to this day.
The first stop on our boat tour is the Fraueninsel. It is significantly smaller than the Herreninsel and, in contrast to it, inhabited. The Benedictine Abbey of Frauenwörth is the oldest nunnery in Germany. Besides the beautiful Marienmünster the bell tower is the symbol of the island. Nearby is the 8th-century Carolingian Gate Hall, one of the oldest buildings in Bavaria.
In addition to monastic life, the Fraueninsel is also known as an artists' colony. Well-known Bavarian painters and writers sought and found peace and new strength here. Even today there are still many handicrafts on the island and you can buy original souvenirs in the small shops. Or you can strengthen yourself with Bavarian delicacies in the beer gardens and stock up on monastery specialties such as marzipan or a herbal liqueur in the monastery shop.
Many small paths lead through the village and over the Fraueninsel. The island can be walked around in about 30 minutes. In the middle of the island you shouldn't miss the two more than 1000-year-old linden trees, which contribute to the romantic atmosphere of the island.
The ship leaves Fraueninsel and continues to Herreninsel. The largest of the three Chiemsee islands is home to what is probably the most famous attraction in the region: Herrenchiemsee Palace.
However, our first stop after the pier is the former Augustinian monastery. In 1873 the former monastery, including the entire Herreninsel, was bought by the Bavarian King Ludwig II. Hence the name Old Castle. Today it serves as a museum and picture gallery. A walk across the Herreninsel then brings us to the Herrenchiemsee New Palace. King Ludwig II had the palace built in 1886 inspired by Versailles and as a kind of temple of glory for his idol, King Louis XIV of France. Herrenchiemsee Palace was Ludwig II's last major construction project, and he only lived in it for a few days. The work ended with the death of the king in June 1886, the castle remained largely unfinished. Like his other buildings, Ludwig II never wanted to open Herrenchiemsee Palace to the public and wanted the palaces to be destroyed after his death. Luckily, this wish of the fairy tale king was not fulfilled, today we can walk through the castle park and admire the building. Now that winter is over, the water features are mothballed and the pools drained. But there are no crowds of visitors like in summer.
We enjoy the afternoon sun and walk back to the jetty. The ship takes us back to Prien.

❤️Toller Stellplatz am Chiemsee ????#Wohnmobilhafen Bernau-Felden
Nach einem 'unfreiwilligem' Boxenstopp' auf dem Stellplatz in Scheideck ging es mit ein paar Tagen Verzögerung nun doch noch mit unserer Wohnmobiltour weiter. Wohin die Reise geht war mal wieder vollkommen offen. Also fuhren wir vom schönen herbstlicher Allgäu ohne genauen Plan, aber mit ganz viel Dankbarkeit einfach los.
