Ultimate Adventure Guide to Medan & Lake Toba | The Travel Intern

Check out our guide to the best of Medan & Lake Toba:

We headed to Medan & Lake Toba late last year and had the time of our lives — enjoying unbelievable views of Lake Toba, exploring the tallest plunge waterfall in Indonesia, hiking up a volcano and stuffing ourselves silly in the city of Medan!

Definitely a hidden gem in Indonesia that is (SUPER) worth exploring!

Changi Airport
00:33 - Lenu Chef Wai's Noodle Bar, Terminal 3 Departures
Their congees are a must-try!

00:37 - Butterfly Garden, Terminal 3 Departures
Home to over 1000 tropical butterflies!

00:43 - Raffles Long Bar, Terminal 3 Departures
Did you know that with a boarding pass you're entitled to a free drink from the bar's menu? Sample-sized, but still good enough for a quick shot before your flight ;-)
You're welcome!

00:48 - iShopChangi
Collect your online goodies from iShopChangi.com here before your flight, tax and duty free!

00:58 - Garuda Indonesia flight to Medan

Lake Toba
01:11 - Lake Toba
Largest lake in Indonesia

01:20 - Taman Simalem Resort
Mountain-top Resort overlooking Lake Toba. Super duper views!

01:30 - One Tree Hill
Popular amongst locals and tourists, this is a prime sunrise spot in the resort. Some locals travel all the way up here and pay to access One Tree Hill even if they don't stay in the resort! (Free for resort customers, of course.)

01:41 - Samosir Island
After admiring Lake Toba from above, it's time to experience Lake Toba. Head down to Samosir Island for some water sports along Lake Toba.

01:49 - Sipiso-piso Waterfall
Indonesia's tallest plunge waterfall at 120 metres. The steps down to the bottom of the waterfall might seem daunting at first, but keep going and you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view from the bottom! Pro-tip: Bring waterproof clothes and gear ;-)

02:05 - Gunung Sibayak in Berastagi
Also known as Mount Sibayak, it's recommended to get a local guide for your hike up to the crater of the volcano! Try a natural mud facial when you're at the top too.

02:20 - Semangat Gunung Hot Springs
The best way to unwind and soothe those sore muscles after an intense hike is to soak in the readily available hot springs located around the base of Gunung Sibayak!

02:31 - JW Marriott Hotel Medan
If you're looking for a luxurious stay, this is definitely the place to go in Medan!

02:39 - Bihun Bebek Asie
Served with a generous amount of duck, this was our favourite breakfast dish in Medan. A DEFINITE MUST-TRY!

02:45 - Bakmi Hock Seng
Just down the street from the duck noodles store is Bakmi Hock Seng, serving yummy seafood noodles with generous servings of seafood like crabmeat, fish, prawns!

02:49 - Kwetiau Ateng
If you're from Singapore, you're definitely no stranger to Char Kuay Teow. Try Medan's version of that, stir-fried noodles served dry or with gravy.

02:56 - Soto Kesawan
A local favourite, Soto Kesawan serves prawn, chicken or beef in a homely coconut soup served with a hearty plate of rice to pair.

03:01 - Macehat Coffee
The queues here are long, but so worth the wait! The Avocado Coffee Float is one of their best sellers there. Try their Creme Brulee coffee too!

03:07 - Si Bolang Durian
This is an absolute heaven for all durian lovers. Be sure to check this place out if you're ever in Medan because the store's open 24 hours. Best to visit during durian season.

03:17 - Tjong A Fie Mansion
Get a guided tour of the Tjong A Fie Mansion. Worth a visit!

03:24 - Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni (Our Lady of Good Health Church)
This is a Catholic temple that has a shrine dedicated to Mother Mary. Do be dressed in appropriate clothing if you're visiting.

Helped By Locals in Berastagi SUMATRA: Mount Sibayak????????Indonesia Travel Vlog Volcano Hike&Hot Springs

In this Indonesia Travel Vlog, we head to Berastagi. It's a popular town in North Sumatra as it's very easy to get to from Medan and it's also close to Lake Toba. We were able to get the tourist bus directly to Berastagi from Bukit Lawang after our jungle trek.
We heard that Berastagi is famous for having not one, but two active volcanos! While one volcano (Mount Sinabung) is too dangerous to climb due to recent eruptions, the other volcano (Mount Sibayak) is still regularly climbed by both local tourists as well as foreigners. We heard that it's popular to hike up Mount Sibayak on a guided tour for sunrise.....however since we heard you can also climb it by yourself for very cheap and a longer hike, we chose that option.
We started by jumping on the green Kama angkot in Berastagi town which we took the whole way to the end of the line. Once we got off the angkot, we started the long hike up to the top. If you have your own transportation you can drive up to the start of the hike which will make it only a half hour hike as opposed to 2 hours like we did, but we didn't mind the walk. Although honestly, the beginning of the hike was quite boring compared to the last half hour which was a 'real hike'. We met so many amazing locals on the way up who wanted to talk to us, take pictures, and tell us about their camping trip! We were amazed at how many people were camping at Mount Sibayak!!! It definitely looked like an amazing experience to camp next to the volcano crater and wake up for sunrise at the top of the mountain!
Once we got to the volcano crater, we could smell a lot of sulfur. Although it was such as amazing experience! The crater looked unreal and the clouds were rolling in so quickly making the whole experience much more otherworldly.
*If you decide to hike Mount Sibayak on your own like we did, STAY ON THE TRAILS!!! Apparently multiple tourists have gone missing and even died trying to hike the mountain alone when they went off the path and got lost.*
When we left Mount Sibayak, we decided it would be the perfect time to go to some hot springs! Berastagi is also famous for having tons of hot springs due to all the thermal activity from the volcanos heating the water. We started walking towards the hot springs.....and luckily a car full of people stopped to pick us up because it started pouring rain right after that!!! They asked us where we wanted to go and we told them some of the hot springs names we had read but that we honestly weren't sure which one, we just wanted hot water! It turned out that they were also going to hot springs after hiking around the volcano since sunrise, so we joined them! We all went to the hot springs Sibayak Ncole where they shared some Indonesian whiskey with us, we all ate Nasi Goreng, and we had an amazing time in the hot springs with gorgeous cloudy mountain views all around us! They were SO nice and gave us lots of travel tips too!! (Thank you guys ????)
From the volcano to the hot springs to all the friendly people we met, this was one of the most amazing days in Indonesia!!! ????????????????

UNREAL Indonesian Food Tour in Berastagi! ???????? Indonesia Village Food

Here is my whole Indonesian Food series in Sumatra! ????

Need a guide for hiking Sibayak and getting around Berastagi? Here is Hendra's contacts:
- website:
- Instagram:

My Indonesian Food Tour in Sumatra continues with the small town of Berastagi, in the Karo Highlands, 60 miles from the city of Medan. Here I meet Hendra, the lovely tour guide who took me to a beautiful culinary and cultural journey. I sampled some of the local Indonesian Cuisine from the Karo region, starting my day with a tasty breakfast of teh talua (raw egg tea) and Nasi Campur, surrounded by locals in a typical cafe.

Next we went to the local Berastagi fruit market, were tropical fruits is displayed in all it's beauty. I could sample 2 varieties of passion fruit, the mangosteen, the strange but tasty 'snake skin fruit' (or salat, in local language) and the terong belanda (Dutch Eggplant).

Getting around Berastagi, it's easy to notice that street are covered by local barbeque places setting up their grills in the open air. The fumes are incredibly inviting but you need to pay attention at what exotic meats could be possibly cooked. Typically, these local grills will have either 'B1' or 'B2' meat, the latter being pork, the former dog meat. I went for typical pork as I didn't feel to courageous ( :D ). The pork is called Babi Panggang Karo and it's marinated in herbs and spices before being slowly grilled over the charcoal.

Finally, in the evening, when the atmosphere becomes quite cold, in the streets of Berastagi it is possible to sample some local Bandrek, an infusion cinnamon, galangal and lemongrass, which then I thought to top up with an egg and condensed milk as well, for a very creamy and warming beverage. As I was sat close to a stall selling a variety of Indonesian dishes, I ordered my Ikan Asam Manis (sweet and sour fish).

Apart from its hearty food, Berastagi is famous for its active volcano 'Mount Sibayak', which can be climbed, and it's hot springs which I encourage you to visit.

This is a travel for food channel and I enjoy eating street food around the world! Eating street food from different countries is what keeps me alive :D
