The Grüneburgpark is a public park in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany, located in the Westend quarter. It began as a park for the Grüne Burg, a castle from the 14th century. In 1789, the banker Peter Heinrich von Bethmann Metzler acquired the property, and had the park designed.
The green lung of Frankfurt, the Grüneburgpark, is the largest park within the avenue ring and the third largest in the entire city area after the Niddapark and the Ostpark. Named after the long-defunct Grüneburg, the former country estate of the Rothschild family, the extensive park was once a magnificent landscape garden owned by the family. Today, the approximately 29-hectare green space serves many Frankfurt citizens as an ideal place to relax, take a walk or go jogging. Whether parents with their children or dog owners, footballers or Frisbee players, sun worshippers or fitness enthusiasts, they all meet every day in the heart of Frankfurt, directly between the new university campus and the Palmengarten. With its large sunbathing lawns, winding and spacious walkways, Grüneburgpark virtually invites outdoor activities of all kinds.

Bensheim
Bensheim is situated between Frankfurt and Heidelberg, the largest town in the district of the Bergstrasse, nestled in the picturesque landscape between the rolling hills of the Odenwald and the sprawling plains of the Hessian Ried. Protected by the slopes of the Odenwald, the wine area “Hessian Bergstrasse” belongs to the warmest areas of Germany.
The town was first mentioned in the documents of the Lorsch Codex over 1240 years ago. In 956 Bensheim was granted market rights, and received the town charter in the 13th century. Trade and industry flourished as a result. In the year 1301, the town was burnt down and consequently governed by varying authorities. The legend goes, during the thirty year war, the „Fraa vun Bensum“ (lady of Bensheim) showed the bavarians the secret entrance to the city. This cunning plot enabled the besieged town to be freed from the Swedish. In the year 1803 Bensheim eventually became part of the county of Hesse-Darmstadt.
Today Bensheim and its nine suburbs have 40,000 inhabitants. The town is the economic and cultural hub of the district Bergstrasse. Around 200 shops of varying description, many boutiques, banks, restaurants, cafés, wine taverns and pubs, 19 hotels und guest houses, active clubs and societys, diverse freetime activities, annual fairs, numerous sights, wine and last but not least the people of Bensheim and their guests make Bensheim into a vibrant, lively and loveable town.
Enjoy the bustle of the town or just relax and unwind while taking a walk or a hike in the „German Riviera“ as this region of the Bergstrasse is often called because of its mild climate.

Wir beginnen unseren Besuch im Luftkurort Auerbach am Bahnhof. Nach dem Auerbacher Haus und dem Kurpark schauen wir uns verschiedene denkmalgeschützte Häuser in der Bachgasse an. Bevor wir uns dem Ortskern zuwenden steht ein Abstecher zur Bergkirche und zum Herrenhaus des Fürstenlagers auf unserem Programm. Nachdem wir auch das Auerbacher Schloss besichtigt haben, endet unser Rundgang in der Nähe des Alten Elektrizitätswerkes am Bahnhof.

The town of Auerbach (Bensheim) [de] was mentioned for the first time in the Lorsch codex as Urbach. Through the marriage of Hildegard von Henneberg, areas of the Bergstraße passed to Henry II of Katzenelnbogen in 1135. Henry was ennobled as an earl in 1138 by King Konrad III. At that time, Auerbach belonged to the County of Katzenelnbogen. Katzenelnbogen was sub-divided into the Lower County (around St. Goar on the Rhine) and the Upper County (in what is now southern Hesse, south of the Main).
A stronghold was needed to provide security for the southern Katzenelnbogen dynasty; this included protection of the duties (tolls) collected at the town of Zwingenberg from travellers using the well-known north-south trading route along the Roman mountain road (Strada Montana, or Bergstrasse in German). Auerbach Castle was built on the strategically important Auerberg (Urberg) hill to address this need. Construction of the castle is believed to have begun about 1222 by the order of Earl Diether IV von Katzenelnbogen. The earliest mention of a castle on Urberg in the historical record appears in 1247, and the first document of the castle itself dates from 1257. In 1479 County Katzenelnbogen (including Auerbach Castle) passed to the Landgraviate of Hesse.
The castle lost much of its strategic importance during the 16th century until, by the time of the Thirty Years War, it was no longer in military use. In 1674 (during the 1672–1679 Franco-Dutch War) the castle was conquered and set afire by an army under French Marshal Turenne, killing local people who had sought protection within its walls. The abandoned castle became a ruin over the following years.
In 1820 the north tower of the castle collapsed, after which the Landgraviate of Hesse decided to secure (and partially rebuild) the ruins. In 1888 an inn was built in the former bailey, which was open year-round.
During the 1950s, the south tower became inaccessible due to the deterioration of its wooden staircase. In 1989, construction began on a terraced restaurant; it opened the following year, increasing the attraction of the castle ruins to visitors. In 2007, the stairway in the south tower was repaired and reopened to the public.
