BEN LOMOND: Up the Mountain Path, down the Ptarmigan Ridge Path
It has been 15 years since I last climed Ben Lomond, but I was pleased to see the improvements in the trail in an attempt to reduce erosion. In those 15 years I appear to have gotten older, or the path has become steeper, as it was 'challenging' which web sites correctly described the ascent as. I came down to Rowardennan via the Ptarmigan Ridge Path, which was even more challenging, even with gravity on my side. It was a beautiful day to explore the highest point of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.
** UPDATE: A few people have commented on my nose. Yes, I have a large hooter. I get it from the Italian side of my family. It also had a little colour on it from a walk I did several days earlier. Enhancing the colour of the video emphasises the red nose. :-)

Summiting the Highest Peak in Ogden, Utah (Ben Lomond)
Ben Lomond is a 9711' mountain that towers over the northern side of Ogden, Utah. Definitely the most impressive and prominent peak in the area, I knew that I had to make it to the top from the very first time I visited.
Considering the knee injury I sustained on the Uinta Highline Trail only months ago, I knew that summiting the long way wasn't going to happen this year. I decided to take the alternate route on 9/28/22 starting at Inspiration Point (Willard Basin), which is a 6 mile trek along the ridge line of Willard Peak and Ben Lomond that gains 1584' in elevation. This turned out to be an incredible trip which enabled me to make it to the summit before the inevitable upcoming harsh winter.

Ben Lomond Snow Pole Hike & Legges Tor in 6 Minutes!
A quick edit of a recent hike I did in Ben Lomond National Park, Tasmania.
At a mere ~6km long (including the summit detour), the Snow Pole track isn't exactly what you'd call 'an epic', but to a trio of Queenslanders in near white-out conditions, I feel we earned the right to call it a 'mini-epic' at least!
Unfortunately my GoPro packed it in right before the summit so I didn't get anything of the 2nd part of the hike... but you know, it's just more snow, cloud and false bravado so no great loss there!

MUNROS 2012: Ben Lomond.
Ben Lomond is classified as a Munro and as such is Scotland's most southerly Munro although the people of Glasgow admiringly refer to it as their hill simply because it is situated only a mere eighteen miles from the City. It stands proudly at three thousand one hundred and ninety-five feet (974m) and OS Map 56 is required for this route. Although the ascent has been described so many times as a 'tourist route', mountain boots, map and compass and proper clothing are still all required for this walk. Note: There are normally no walking restrictions on the Ben and it is usually open all year. (It is also possible to do this walk by public transport from Glasgow by Citylink bus from Buchanan Street Bus Station to Inverbeg in conjunction with a pre-arranged booking on the Rowardennan ferry).
The starting point for this walk is at the car parking and toilet facilities just beyond the Rowardennan Hotel on the West Highland Way, just before the Hostel grounds. This area, along with adjacent Forestry Commission land, was designated the Ben Lomond National Memorial Park in December 1995 and was formally opened by the Rt Hon Donald Dewar, then Secretary of State for Scotland, on 11 November 1997. The area is managed primarily with conservation principles in mind and also as a reminder and as a tribute, to be held in perpetuity, to those who gave their lives in the service of their country. There is a lochside memorial, reached via the car park. At the start of the last century you could hire a guide and a pony for the ascent of the Ben. Nowadays, the route up the Ben for walkers is relatively easy to follow. Rising from this east shore of Loch Lomond, the Ben forms part of an area including the summits of Ptarmigan, two thousand three hundred and ninety-seven feet (731m), Sron Aonaich, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-two feet (577m) and Beinn Uird, one thousand nine hundred and fifty-four feet (596m).
The walk can really be divided into three sections. Firstly, the steep walk through an area once filled with trees, through some gates to the National Trust plaque. Secondly, a relatively easier plod through open land via Sron Aonaich followed by thirdly, the final assault on a rather more narrow path where care should be taken at all times. In the summer months, you will probably be in amongst a stream of people ascending and descending the Ben. It really can be that popular. Remember though that an extensive repair programme has brought what was a major path erosion scar on the mountainside, very much under control. Suppose we can all really prevent those paths getting wider and wider again by keeping to the surfaced path at all times. This route is an approximate seven mile walk with an ascent in excess of over three thousand feet, for which four or five hours should be allowed in good weather to fully enjoy the walk and the views.

On a clear day the panorama from the trig point should take in Tinto Hill in Lanarkshire, Stirling and the Forth estuary, the Firth of Clyde, Arran, Kintyre, Jura and possibly Ben Nevis although I've never been able to sight it from the summit. Looking to the southern end of the Loch, the Highland Boundary Fault can be seen making its way over Conic Hill and the islands immediately in front of Balmaha. Looking in a southeastern direction from the trig point, the Campsie Fells are located. Earls Seat is the highest point of the Fells although the protruding shape of Dumgoyne always makes it the most recognisable hill in the Campsies. The Arrochar Alps above Loch Long can quite easily be spotted across the Loch. Ben Arthur, more commonly known as the Cobbler is the most distinctive peak. To the north, the immediate big mountain is Ben More above Crianlarich.
For clarity, the Munros are those separate Scottish mountains over three thousand feet (914m) high, the first list of which was compiled and published by Sir Hugh Munro in 1891. In the previous (1984) list there were two hundred and seventy-seven mountains recorded and this subsequently changed to two hundred and eighty-four in August 1997. However, technology now dictates that the current corrected total stands at two hundred and eighty-three.
Geoffrey of Monmouth who died in 1154, detailed how King Arthur pursued his enemies up Loch Lomond and consequently overthrew an Irish army that came to their relief. From his 1904 writings A.R. Hope Moncrieff regards Ben Lomond in winter, a vast white sugar loaf; in summer a prismatic cone of yellow and amethyst and opal lights; in spring, a grey, gloomy, stony pile of rocks; in autumn, a weather indicator.
