Switzerland playlist Interlaken makes a perfect home base for exploring the beautiful mountains all around the central region of Switzerland, offering many hotels, restaurants and shops, and wonderful train and bus connections to get up to the mountain sites. Tourists have been coming to Interlaken and the area since about 1800 when it was first popularized by some romantic painters and then tourism really increased in the 1890s and early 1900s with the opening of railway service.
Some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery is waiting for you just outside of Interlaken in the heart of the Swiss Alps. In this movie we’re focusing on how to get the most out of your visit to the town. For the more adventurous you can go paragliding. Or for something less adventurous you can just rent a bicycle and go peddle around. There's a lot to see in the Interlaken area. The town itself is relatively flat and you can peddle through the shopping areas and up into the residential zones.
A main activity in town is shopping – all sorts of souvenirs for sale, clothing, you can buy some hiking gear. It's a great place for backpacks, for boots, hats, clothing of all kinds, walking sticks and a T-shirt that says Interlaken.
There's not much of a pedestrian zone that's free of automobiles here but they do have one little lane that's for pedestrians. But the rest of town is very friendly for walking around, the sidewalks are wide and there's always things to look at and things to do.
The great meadow forms a major park, beautifully landscaped and kept in a semi-natural state with flowers and trees and the meadow along one side and grand hotels on the other.
If you’re a gambler there is a casino like there is in most Swiss towns and it's an elegant place. It’s part of the Kursal complex which for 100 years has been a cultural center of the city, set in a beautiful park with fountains and flowers.
Another major attraction worth seeing near Interlaken is the city of Bern the political capital of Switzerland and it's just one hour away by train.
The Bern train station is right next to the old town so your walk through the historic zone begins the moment you arrive. The main street proceeds directly from the front of the train station right through the historic center. It's one street about ten blocks long, but it changes name several times. By the station and it's the Spitalgasse, then it becomes the Marktgasse, then the Kramgasse, then the Gerechtigkeitsgasse. Today, it's the main street of Bern, as it has been for centuries. This road is remarkable, not only for the ancient buildings and arcades that cover both sides, but for the spectacular Renaissance fountains down the middle. Today it's a popular shopping street with surprisingly modern shop interiors, and there's a slight curve with a long line of Baroque façades that combine to produce one of Bern's most impressive streetscapes. This Kramgasse and its buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses the entire old city of Bern – a very impressive honor that UNESCO has designated all of the historic area as a World Heritage Site.
At the end of town across the river they have their famous bear pits. In recent years the government has greatly expanded this bear habitat to make it really a pleasant place for the bears to live.
Another important building is the Gothic cathedral with the nation's highest church tower at 328 feet, which you may climb for a bird’s eye view of the historic center. Construction of the cathedral began in 1421 in the Gothic style. It is a three-nave basilica without a transept or aisles, 85 m long and 34 m wide – it is quite huge. The walls outside are supported by flying buttresses and the majority of the building is constructed with local sandstone, and bricks were used for the ceiling for the vaults.
On the train ride back to Interlaken it is easy to get off at the picturesque city of Thun and spend a few hours walking around, enjoying the special ambience of this place, with a river running through the middle of the Old Town and a unique two-level sidewalk on the main pedestrian street. Then return to Interlaken and continue our exploration of this great city.

Bern has preserved its historical features, the capital of Switzerland. The Old Town of Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has 6-kilometer arcades called gazebos, one of the longest weather-protected shopping areas in Europe.
The medieval atmosphere of the city is unique with numerous fountains, sandstone facades, alleys and historical towers. The Old Town, surrounded by the Aare River, offers the most beautiful view of the elevated rose garden above the Bear Park or the platform of the 101-meter tower of Munster. The former ramparts and bastions drop off steeply to the river. Boutiques, bars and small art scenes of the Old Town, partially located in the basement vaults, as well as small outdoor cafes attract locals, as well as many tourists. Despite the good public transport system, it is best to explore the center of Bern on foot.
The world's most complete collection of works by artist Paul Klee is located in the Paul Klee Center on the outskirts of the city. Not many cities have managed to retain their historic features quite as successfully as Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The old town of Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and thanks to its 6 kilometres of arcades - the locals refer to them as 'Lauben' - boasts on of the longest weather-sheltered shopping promenades in Europe.
The medieval air of this city with its many fountains, sandstone facades, narrow streets and historic towers is unique. The elevated Rose Garden above the Bear Park and the platform of the 101-metre-high cathedral tower offer the best views of the old town round which the River Aare flows. The former entrenchments and bastions drop down steeply to the river. The boutiques, bars and cabaret stages of the old town, some of which are located in vaulted cellars, and the small street cafes attract locals as well as a lot of tourists. Although Bern has a very good public transport network it is best to explore the city centre on foot.

In the squares of the city centre colourful weekly markets present their wares. The Onion Market (Zibelemärit) which takes place on the fourth Monday in November is particularly worth visiting: visitors to the traditional market dedicated to onions start pouring into the city in the early hours.

Characteristic Bernese streets, lanes and buildings tell fascinating stories, and right in the middle, in the lower part of the old town, rises one of the city's most famous landmarks: the Zytglogge (clock tower). Once the city gate, the clock tower attracts spectators from all over the world.
The Parliament Building ????
The Parliament Building in Bern is the heart of Swiss democracy. Parliament meets under its mighty dome, while parts of the federal government and the federal administration of Switzerland are located in the western and eastern wings. Outside, the vast Bundesplatz (Parliament Square) is a lively meeting place for young and old.
In addition to the weekly bazaars, the square hosts political demonstrations, concerts, state receptions and sporting events.
During the winter months, an artificial skating rink and a restaurant are set up in front of the National Bank, and from spring to autumn, interactive fountains on the west side of the square provide refreshing entertainment for children and adults.
26 fountains for 26 cantons
The 26 fountains of the water performance in the Parliament Square represent the 26 cantons of Switzerland. Sometimes rhythmically, sometimes chaotically, water bursts right out of the stone slabs and splashes seven meters into the air. Children play and splash in the fountains, squealing with joy, while adults and even dogs can refresh themselves in the cool water on hot days. Young people gathered in small and large groups, sat around the fountains, had picnics, seriously discussed and perhaps even rehearsed a dance performance.
Rosengarten Bern ????
The Rose Garden is one of the most beautiful parks in Bern, offering a unique view of the rooftops of the old city, the cathedral and the bend of the Aare River.
The magic of cherry blossoms in spring, about 250 types of roses in bloom in summer, the radiance of colors in the autumn months and the cozy veranda of the Rosengarten restaurant in winter make a visit to Rosengarten something special at any time of the year.
A leisurely walk in the park, reading a book on a bench, a picnic with friends, watching the sunset on a date, or just sitting on the garden wall with your legs dangling: the relaxed atmosphere of the rose garden invites young and old to linger. The park is known to the locals as a place for romantic dates and a popular place after work.
Perched high above the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the public park offers great views of Bern's old town and sights. In good weather, the view extends far beyond the city limits to the local mountain Bern, Gurten and the Alps. This makes Rosengarten not only a local recreational area, but also an ideal place for beautiful souvenir photos.
Bear Pit ????
The Bernese Bear Pit is a landmark known far beyond the borders of Switzerland. Since 2009, Bern's bears have also been given a 6,000 square meter state-of-the-art park, which they can enter through a tunnel.
Guests can tour the old bear pit as well as the new bear park. They will see the new park with its green hilly terrain including caves and the Bear bath on the river Aare. You can also book excursions during which you will learn a lot of interesting things about the history of the bear park - take a look behind the scenes.
Nydeggbrücke ????
The oldest and most beautiful bridge in Bern, still in operation. Originally built in 1256, the bridge was made of wood and crossed the Aare River in the area of Nidegg Castle. The bridge was destroyed during the flood of 1460.

Saas-Fee, the village of the glaciers, where WHAM’s LAST CHRISTMAS was filmed! Saas-Fee / Saastal is a very exciting tourist destination, in particular during Winter. The village is car-free, thus you will be experiencing great holiday vibes up there. Saas-Fee is surrounded by the tall Alps, the Allalinhorn is the iconic peak of the village. Saas-Fee has everything it needs to be a perfect winter wonderland village, just like Zermatt. There may be no Matterhorn in Saas-Fee but the village has many glaciers. This made Saas-Fee to one of the most snow sure destinations of Switzerland and is the reason, why you could come here for Summer skiing. The upper part of the slopes are on the glaciers itself, in Saas-Fee but also in Saas-Grund (the sunnier side of the ski resort). Do not forget to take the cable car and the Metro Alpin up to the Mittelallalin. The journey is surely going to be unforgettable: You will be taking the world's highest located underground funicular, up on the Mittelallalin you may eat at the world's highest altitude revolving restaurant and you may visit the ice pavilion, the largest manmade glacier cave. The glacier cave is full of wonderful scupltures and it one of the very highlights of Saas-Fee!
Besides a fantastic ski resort, Saas-Fee hosts many great hotels. One of them is the Hotel The Capra, a brilliant 5 Star Hotel (paid content). The hotel has a wonderful spa with even a private section. A highlight is the outdoor jacuzzi/whirlpool. The hospitality of the Capra hotel is really of high Swiss standard: Very genuinely friendly personnel, professional barkeepers, a master of a Sommelier and the hotel also offers shuttle services to the ski room near the teleferic. Although the hotel is not cheap, it is very worth the price!
