10 Real Haunted Ghost Towns to See in America!

Want to visit a REAL ghost town? Spooky abandoned post-apocalyptic villages aren’t just the stuff of movies - there are plenty right here in America, and some are said to be haunted!

1. Bodie, California
This National Historic Landmark is a perfectly preserved example of the late nineteenth century gold mining towns of California. Rumor has it, any visitor who tries to sneak off with an artifact from this ghost town will be cursed with bad luck!

2. St. Elmo, Colorado
St. Elmo was a lively mining center with a booming population of 2000 until the local railroad closed down. Apparently, the ghost of former resident Annabelle Stark keeps watch over the town.

3. Centralia, Pennsylvania
Centralia is home to 10 stubborn people who refuse to move and was the main inspiration for the horror movie Silent Hill. A mine fire which has been burning under the town since 1962 has caused most residents to leave over the years.

4. Bannack, Montana
With a thriving population of 10,000 it was nicknamed the New Eldorado by the hopeful prospectors. It also once had an outlaw gang leader as its sheriff. Each July, there’s a re-enactment festival celebrating the town’s former glory.

5. Cahawba, Alabama
Cahawba was once the capital of Alabama but today is an archeological park open to visitors. You can wander around and view the many abandoned streets and ruins of this formerly important governmental center.

6. Rhyolite, Nevada
First established as a mining camp near Death Valley in 1905, Rhyolite saw its peak during the American gold rush. It’s a great testament of the boom and bust cycle of this era.

7. Terlingua, Texas
Once a district of mining villages, today a ghost town, reduced to several closed mines and many abandoned industrial facilities, businesses and homes. However there’s still a working saloon for those seeking the authentic Old West experience.

8. Oatman, Arizona
Located in the Black Mountains it became famous when 10 million dollars worth of gold was discovered in the area. Wild burros now roam the streets and gunfights are staged on the weekends.

9. Glenrio, Texas
Formerly known as Rock Island it was a railway town which fell into disuse when Interstate 40 bypassed the community in 1973. Visit the Phillips 66 Service Station and other once-busy buildings that are now ghosts of their former glory.

10. Kennecott, Alaska
One of the most remote ghost towns in America, is an old copper mining town. Virtually abandoned since the Depression in the 1930’s, it now has guided tours allowing visitors to explore the abandoned buildings frozen in time…

What’s the spookiest place you’ve visited? Comment below!

Interstate 80 East

Number 2 in length, Interstate 80 is almost certainly number one in importance when it comes to transcontinental routes. Lots to talk about in the longest Control City Freak vid yet! Control City Freak is updated weekly and covers every two digit Interstate Highway in America. I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. I welcome all to join my geeky tour of every primary Interstate in the country!

All images of roads and signs come from Google Street View unless otherwise specified.

The Ghosts of Bellefonte - Search the Past and Present for Apparitions in an Alabama Ghost Town.

#letswalk through Bellefonte Cemetery in #Alabama in search of #ghosts
But first, let's hear about the town's eerie #history
#ghosttown #ghost #civilwar #nuclear #spirits #spooky #cemetery #graveyard #haunted

Transcription of the Historical Placard at Bellefonte Cemetery:
Before the courthouse was completed, the community selected a location for a cemetery. The highest elevation in Bellefonte's corporate limits was chosen as the town's burial place. The earliest inscribed marker in Bellefonte Cemetery bears the date 1826.

The Civil War exacted a heavy toll on Bellefonte. The Federal Army burned the courthouse and the town never recovered. The town square was sold at public auction in 1878. Only the Bellefonte Cemetery remains of the bustling river port town which was Jackson County's seat of Justice from 1828 until November 1858.

A 1936 TVA survey identified 229 grave plots and 57 inscribed markers in the cemetery. Recent surveys of the cemetery show many graves with plain limestone rocks and numerous unmarked graves.

The Jackson County Historical Association began efforts to preserve the Bellefonte Cemetery in 2005. They placed the marker here to honor those individuals who established the 19th century town of Bellefonte, Alabama.

The Alabama Historical Commission listed the Bellefonte Cemetery in the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register in 2005.

Eating, Drinking & Staying in Bellefonte, PA for 36 Hours for the Hello Social Co Creator Meetup

I just spent 36 hours in Bellefonte in Pennsylvania’s Happy Valley for the Hello Social Co. Creator Meetup. Hello Social Co. is a firm focusing on destination marketing and social media. I got to participate on a panel at this fantastic event for internet creators to network with each other, learn about social media trends and engage with Destination Marketing brands. I stayed at the Gamble Mill Restaurant, Bar and Inn while I was in Bellefonte. This former mill was recently renovated to include a Bed & Breakfast along with the restaurant. I stayed in a small and very nice room with a very comfortable bed. I got in late the first night so I grabbed dinner down in the restaurant. I got a tasty burger with prosciutto, brie cheese and caramelized onion jam. After dinner, I headed downstairs to the Republic Bar, which has a nice speakeasy vibe. They served me one of the best cocktails I had recently. For breakfast the next morning, I walked down the block to Bonfatto’s, the small café and Italian Grocery in town. I got a latte and a great croissant breakfast sandwich. My last food stop of the trip was at Axemann Brewery just outside downtown Bellefonte and one of many breweries now in Happy Valley. I got the Hazy Dazy IPA and a Meatball Parm Pizza.

Nice comfy town in Pa. I love it there!

127 Curtin Street E Bellefonte PA

The Victorian elegance is a must see. You can own a piece of history located in Bellefonte's historic district and built in 1880. Andrew G. Curtin, Governor of PA had this house built. The home has been restored with attention to detail and upgraded functionality. Home sits on large level lot with 3 parking spots. Many windows bring in lots of natural light. Home is full of architectural details including 10' ceilings, and detailed woodwork. A wrap around porch welcomes you to this historic gem.
