Bel Air Mauritius I felt like a prince, a fresh prince

Bel Air is a huge village that makes you feel like a Prince. The welcoming locals, bustling streets, great history, grilled meats, and a train. When Will Smith said home to Bel Air I think he was talking about this great village.

We started at the sign that needed some pruning from the wild banana trees around it. Then we hit the main street and got some food from Our Grill. The loud proprietor, well almost as loud as me, served up a tasty feast of chicken wings and rounders. The real taste of Mauritius he claimed, and I believe him. Our hunger satisfied we went exploring the shops and I got a new selfie stick.

The center of the town is dominated by Saint Esprit church, a beautiful double towered building. I was truly impressed by the stonework both on the outside and around the altar. The church is undergoing renovations to return it to its former glory. The sight of it over the huge banyan trees is one I won't quickly forget. A quick drive through a sunny rainstorm and we were at Deep River.

It took me forever to see the chimney, beautiful as it was because someone had placed a train in the way. An old Daimler-Benz narrow gauge diesel locomotive. I was actually at a loss for words and all I could do for a few seconds was point at it. It has rusted a bit, but it was the highlight of my day. I made sure Riki got loads of pictures before I went off to explore. Two tall bridges crossed the deep river, and Riki saw a great tree.

The next stop was a park containing a lower version of the Deep River and we could see the power of the river as it flowed through a channel. No time to relax in the well-placed kiosk we were off to chimney number two, Bell Rose. She was unfortunately under lock and key, but I did find an old bridge made out of railway tracks and a cute puppy.

A short stop at a temple to see actual gold ponies pulling a gold chariot, a must-see location, before we made our way to La Lucy chimney. She has pride of place in a Bel Air park, with a tree growing on her. Riki remarked something about permaculture, while I didn't eat the fruit that was dropping off her. This would have been of best chimney day ever, but there was more to come.

Caroline, or as I called her Constance, um, for those that don't know Riki's middle name is Carolyn. She is situated down a back alley between a host of houses. We are not sure where she got her name, but some, and by some I mean me, have suggested that she is named after Charles Darwin's Sister.

We finished off the day at the river Seche, which means dry river, but as I pointed out, there was tons of water in it. Riki then pretended to know all the words to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air song while a couple of thrones drove by.

Bel Air in Mauritius would put the Hollywood version to shame. The people of this village, all 18 000 of them will make you feel like a prince, maybe even refresh your soul.

East Coast Drive - Roche Noir to Post de Flacq

We start at Roche Noir on the east coast, home of caves (lava tunnels) including Cave Madame. The road is one of the prettiest and includes the famous windmills (aka massive scary wind turbines) and a drive through Bras d'Eau national forest. Then onto Poste de Flacq on a new road that would make a great rally stage.

GRAND MANAN ISLAND Travel Guide ???? | MUST-VISIT Island in ATLANTIC CANADA! ???????? (New Brunswick)

Hey guys, we’re Samuel and Audrey and today we’re bringing you to Grand Manan, an idyllic island in New Brunswick, Canada, set in the Bay of Fundy, quite close to the border with Maine.

This was a family road trip we planned with Sam’s parents, George and Debbie, and some of their best friends, Joan and Gary.

There are so many things to do in Grand Manan, and together we spent 4 days road tripping across the island visiting lighthouses, feasting on fresh lobster and fish and chips, exploring the historic smokesheds in Seal Cove, birdwatching in Castalia Marsh, taking a side trip to White Head Island, and catching some spectacular cliff-top sunsets.

Our trip to Grand Manan was laid back with lots of time outdoors in nature, and now we want to share it with you. We think this is a must-visit island in Atlantic Canada, and we’ll show you why in this Grand Manan travel guide!

If you’re planning a trip to Grand Manan in the summer, we’d suggest going on the Grand Manan Coastal Transport website and booking your ticket for the crossing ahead of time. This is a popular summer destination in New Brunswick, so the ferry can get busy.

As for cost, you have to pay for your vehicle plus each individual passenger. It was $35.80 for the car and an additional $12 per passenger when we travelled.

Mauritius Travel

Mauritius Travel - The island of Mauritius was first discovered by Arab sailors, at some time in the 9th century, the exact date is unknown. At that time the island was uninhabited and covered in a dense forest. The Arab sailors were not interested in settling on the island which they named Dina Arobi or Dinarobin. Fernandez Pereira, a Portuguese sailor found the island in 1505 and decided to give it the name of Cerne. However, the Portuguese did not settle permanently on the island either.

The first to colonise the island were the Dutch. They took possession of the island in 1598. The Dutch settlers landed on a bay in the south-eastern part of the island which was named Warwyck Haven after the commander VanWarwyck, the bay is now known as Grand Port. Mauritius also got its name during this period; the island was named after the Prince of Holland Mauritz de Nassau.

In 1710, the Dutch abandoned the island, leaving behind macaques, the java deer, sugar cane, fugitive slaves and, also, an irreversible damage to the endemic and indigenous flora and fauna of the island - the Dodo was, by then, extinct due to extensive hunting, the bird being very easy to capture, while the once abundant black ebony tree population was almost completely depleted due to over-exploitation for its timber.

The French settled on the island in 1712, also landing at the bay in the south-east. They renamed the bay Port Bourbon and renamed the island Ile de France. They settled on the north-western side of the island and established their main harbour there, Port Louis, the present-day capital of Mauritius. During the French settlement there was a lot of development in the country. Mahé de Labourdonnais, whose statue can be seen across from the harbour in Port louis,is known as the founder of the capital city and the island prospered under his governance (1735-1746).

In August 1810, the British tried to take over the island but lost after a fierce battle against the French in the famous Battle of Grand Port - the only naval victory of the French over the British during the Napoleonic period. However, the British came back in December 1810 and successfully defeated the French. From then on, the island was renamed Mauritius and remained under British rule until it attained independence, though the British agreed to allow the locals to continue using the French language.

In 1835, slavery was officially abolished and, as most of the African slaves chose to abandon the agricultural fields and move to small coastal villages, indentured labourers (Coolies) were brought in from India to work in the growing sugar-cane industry.

On March 12, 1968 Mauritius became an independent nation within the Commonwealth. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam also known as the Father of the Nation led the island to independence and did a lot to develop the country but during his reign the country faced a lot of economic difficulties and political turmoil following postponing of elections for more than 9 years. On March 12, 1992, Mauritius became a republic under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Sir Aneerood Jugnauth.

A stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record, the country has attracted considerable foreign investment and has one of Africa's highest per capita incomes. Recent poor weather and declining sugar prices have slowed economic growth leading to some protests over standards of living in the Creole community.

Deer burger in Vacoas Mauritius at One N Only

We came to get the deer or Cerf burger, but ended up eating loads of great food. We started with Boulette, dumplings in a clear soup because they are always ready and you can start eating in under 30 seconds. The meal of the day was chicken Kalia, tons of rice, and tamarind achar. Riki is still trying to figure out the spicing. Followed by the deer burger, my fav of the day. They made a milkshake-like drink for us that they had invented called Ole Ole. Based on the Filipino drink halo-halo, but with a Mauritian twist. It was a great day at the One N Only in Vacoas Mauritius. Thank you Shameem and Mama Mary.
