Portugal Roadtrip Day 1 - Beja in the Alentejo region

On the first day of our Portugal Road trip we head 90 minutes up the road from Ferragudo to the ancient city of Beja. Mostly known for its castle and city walls; Beja is a beautiful town with traditionally tiled buildings, excellent restaurants and we enjoyed a wonderful stay on a converted farm.

We really enjoyed the cute town despite many restaurants and shops being closed due to confinement. The restaurant we found offered excellent local dishes. One of the town's churches provided an opportunity to purchase handmade items from local artists. We really discovered there are a ton of things to do in Beja and hope to return when things are back to normal.

We stayed at Herdade da Diabroria:

Alentejo, the perfect Portugal

Between Lisbon and the Algarve, lies the Alentejo, Portugal’s largest region. The name stands for “beyond the Tejo”, as it sits past the river Tagus, below Lisbon.
Alentejo is a region of vast fields dotted with olive groves, vines, and lonely cork trees. To the east, bordering with Spain, you’ll find hilltop villages with castles, and to the west, a beautiful coastline of quiet beaches.

In The Mood for Alentejo: Part 3 | Exploring Estremoz, Elvas, Mouchão & Marvão | Travel in Portugal

Alentejo in Portugal is a spectacularly vast region that urges anyone with a love for bucolic sceneries and dramatic landscapes to come back over and over again. This time, we headed to Alto Alentejo, this Portuguese hinterland that shares a border with Spain, exploring the deeply historic Estremoz, the garrison town of Elvas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its mighty twin fortresses, and climbed the Serra de São Mamede (on the mountainous district of Portalegre) for the grand finale that is the ancient hilltop town of Marvão.

In between, we encountered two wonderful surprises -- a stay in Monte da Provença, this idyllic and rural farmhouse hotel just outside Elvas, and finally, a visit in Herdade do Mouchão, one of the oldest vineyards in Alentejo, with their heritage Alicante Bouschet wines that have surpassed renown.

As you can see, I truly enjoy Alentejo. There's just so much beauty in the region still left unexplored that I keep coming back here to create more videos.

ALENTEJO Portugal ROAD TRIP (Beja and Badoca Safari) | ???????? We slept in a former convent

We continue our Portugal road trip in Alentejo, with the medieval city of Beja, the capital of Lower Alentejo. The highlight of our stay was our hotel, a former convent with lovely grounds and a pool. The pool was very appreciated, as Beja is known as the hottest city in Portugal. When we finally managed to leave the pool, we visited the Badoca Safari Park, the Africa of Alentejo. We link them both below.
Have you visited the Alentejo region in Portugal? What was your highlight?

We started the Alentejo road trip in Evora, with lots of tasty food and Roman ruins that you should check out here:

Beja, Alentejo, Portugal - 4k ????????

Beja is located in the Alentejo area of Portugal. The area is fairly flat with a lot of farmland surrounding small towns and villages. However, the city of Beja is situated on a 900 foot tall hill overlooking the plains. CNN Portugal was filming something as I arrived. It looked like a b-roll sequence.

I took a detour on the way from Albufeira to Coimbra.

We may be retiring in Portugal and I wanted to spend a few weeks doing a scouting trip looking at several areas.

Is the Interior of Portugal Worth It? TOO RURAL?! How much is it?

We're on a 3 month tour of Portugal starting with the Algarve and working our way up north one region at a time. This vlog is from Alentejo and more specifically our 2 nights in Beja. Where is Beja and is this region even worth visiting or considering living in? We ended up staying in Alentejo for a total of 10 nights, which was shorter than planned but due to the lack of housing options that accepted dogs, we had to shorten things.

The next video we'll be in the Lisbon region as we hope to give you a glimpse of things to do, places to live, and cost of living/traveling around Portugal. We've included all of our travel costs for each region so that you know what our expenses for 4 adults, 1 child, and small dog is like.

Castle of Beja (Castelo de Beja) #findingtheuniverse #Beja #Portugal

The Castle of Beja is a medieval castle in the civil parish of Beja, municipality of Beja, Portuguese district of Beja.

During the Reconquista from the Moors, the region was first conquered in 1159 by the forces of King Afonso Henriques (1112-1185), but it was abandoned four months later by his forces.

In 1253, King D. Afonso III began work on reconstructing the fortress, which was already a severe stage of degradation.[1] A foral (charter) was issued to Beja in 1254.

???????? An aerial view of Beja in Portugal

Taken exactly 3 years before, this was my first ever drone video and the exciting beginning of a new hobby. From this date onwards, at least one drone would be a permanent companion to my journeys.
