Day Trip to Bellville ???? (FULL EPISODE) S10 E1

This town between Houston and Austin may seem small and unexceptional, but it holds some of our oldest stories. This is the land where Texas began! And more than just that, it's a place filled with passionate folks who have BIG talents.

While you’re in town, be sure you stop by this giant bust statue to say “Howdy” to the Father of Texas!

To learn the story of how Texas began, you’ll have to go a little ways outside of town to San Felipe, where Austin established his “Old 300” colony. If you’re wondering why you’ve never heard of this very important town, it’s because the settlers were forced to abandon the town, burning it to the ground to escape Santa Ana’s pursuits. This museum does an incredible job of telling this story.

The same man who owns Newman’s Bakery has created this dream kingdom where you can feel like royalty for an afternoon. He opens up his towering home for tours, and it’s a great place to bring out your inner kid. Ring the tower bells, have a sword fight or fling cannon balls from a giant trebuchet (aka catapult) into the lake!

This blacksmith shop is an incredible testament to owner Cowboy’s passion for crafting knives — and playing with fire! Each knife lining the shelves of his shop has been hand-crafted over a flame and the detailed designs were carved in by hand.

However you slice it, this family-owned market serves up some GOOD meat and it’s a carnivore’s paradise. In addition to 28 varieties of hand-stuffed, house-made sausages, they also have a huge selection of jerkies, briskets, bacon and more. Stop in at the cafe for a baked potato piled high with handmade pecan-smoked Chipotle Sausage, and after lunch, head to the meat counter to purchase even more meat.

Since you’re in the land where Texas began, it’s only fitting that you have Texas’s favorite treat as a snack. Aside from ruling an epic kingdom, Newman also bakes a mean kolache.

The Hills is the most old-fashioned joint in town, and since 1952, it’s been the place to park your ride and grab a classic burger and shake. Not much has changed since the sock-hop days, and in this black-and-white diner that’s a great thing! Don’t skip out on the onion rings — they’re enormous!

Don’t move to Corpus Christ, Texas. Seriously. Let us tell you why.. In this series we tell you the WORST places to live in the United States. Our TOP 10 Lists tell you where NOT to move and why we think you should avoid it.

Day Trip to Castroville ???????? (FULL EPISODE) S13 E11

The fingerprints of 19th-century European explorers and settlers can be seen all over Texas, but there isn't anywhere else quite like Castroville. Established by Alsatian immigrants, Castroville is unique with its distinctive historical treasures, French/German/Alsatian food, and beautiful public parks.

Established in 1974, Haby’s has been baking some of the best cakes, pastries, and bread in Medina County. Located in historic Castroville, it’s the best place to buy quality baked goods, including French bread, croissants, and other heirloom recipe-produced delicacies.

For over 30 years now, Dziuk’s Meat Market has been proudly serving customers their quality fresh cuts, famous dried meats, and utterly unique (and delicious!) raw meat parisa. They also offer processing services for hunters, as well as lots of groceries and deli offerings.

Established and run by Louisiana natives and Alsatian descendants, Paris St. Po’Boys offers the best and freshest cajun cuisine in the area. Their po’boys are made with authentic New Orleans bread, and they also offer boudin, alligator, and other creole specialties.

Landmark Inn tells the story of migration, industry, and preservation in Texas. The site is very large and you can easily spend a whole afternoon exploring the museum and all of the old buildings.

The Steinbach Hus (house) was originally built between 1618 and 1648 in Wahlbach, France, in the Alsatian style. It took four years to dissemble, relocate, rebuild, and restore the Steinbach Hus. It arrived by truck in Castroville (as a gift from the Alsatian French government) in 1998, and is now open for visitors.

Castroville Regional Park consists of 126 wooded acres on the banks of the beautiful turquoise Rio Medina (Medina River). The park is surrounded by a walking trail and includes lots of amenities like grills, picnic tables, sports fields, and pavilions. And don’t forget to head up the hill to take in the overlook over the city!

[4K] Texas State Penitentiary - Huntsville Unit - Walls Unit Huntsville, Texas

Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville or Huntsville Unit (HV), nicknamed Walls Unit, is a Texas state prison located in Huntsville, Texas, United States. The approximately 54.36-acre (22.00 ha) facility, near Downtown Huntsville, is operated by the Correctional Institutions Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), administered as within Region I.[1] The facility, the oldest Texas state prison, opened in 1849.[2]

The unit houses the execution chamber of the State of Texas. It is the most active execution chamber in the United States, with 573 (as of September 28, 2021)[3] executions since 1982, when the death penalty was reinstated in Texas (see Lists of people executed in Texas).[4]

The prison's first inmates arrived on October 2, 1849.[5] The unit was named after the County of Huntsville.[6] Robert Perkinson, the author of Texas Tough: The Rise of America’s Prison Empire, wrote that the unit was, within Texas, the first public work of any importance.[7]

Originally Huntsville Unit was only for white Texans; the only penalties available to black Texans were whipping and hanging. During the American Civil War, prisoners at Huntsville produced tents and uniforms for Confederate forces at the prison textile factory.[8] After the Civil War ended, Huntsville Unit was the only prison in the former Confederate States of America to remain.[5] Perkinson stated that the prison became, within the state, the first racially integrated public institution.[7]

Originally women in the Texas Prison System were housed in the Huntsville Unit.[9] Beginning in 1883 women were housed in the Johnson Farm, a privately owned cotton plantation near Huntsville.[10] During this time there was some concern that immoral practices may be resorted to in regards to the female prisoners.[11]

Historically the prison served as the administrative headquarters of the Texas Prison System and the Texas Department of Corrections;[12][13] the superintendent and the other executive officers worked in the prison, and all of the central offices of the system's departments and all of the permanent records were located in the prison.[12] In 1934 John Lomax and Alan Lomax recorded the earliest known recording of This Little Light of Mine when they recorded Jim Boyd of Jacksonville, Texas, singing at prison.[14][15]

In 1974, the prison was the site of an eleven-day siege, one of the longest hostage-taking sieges in United States history.[16] Three armed inmates (Fred Carrasco, Ignacio Cuevas, and Rudy Dominquez) held several hostages in the education department. The ring leader, Carrasco, had been a porter in the chapel. Cuevas usually worked in the inmate dining hall. Ten hostages were employees of the prison system: two were educators, and one was a guard. Later on, the prison chaplain would also become a hostage. Four prisoners were also held as hostages. On the final day, the inmates tried to escape using chalkboards and hostages as shields.[17][page needed][18] Dominquez was killed in the attempt. Carrasco killed Elizabeth Beseda, then shot himself. Julia Standley was also killed that day. Ignacio Cuevas was executed on May 23, 1991, for her murder.[19][20]
