9 Best Things to Do in Tarpon Springs, Florida - The Sponge Capital of the World

Less than an hour drive north of Tampa on Florida’s Gulf Coast is one of the most offbeat, culturally-rich communities in the state of Florida.

Tarpon Springs was first settled in the 1870s, named for the giant tarpon that jumped and splashed in Spring Bayou. It was around the bayou where most of the town’s early development took place as a wintering spot for well-to-do northerners. Victorian-era houses still dot the neighborhood.

Toward the end of the century, boats would leave docks along Dodecanese Boulevard to harvest sponges from Key West to the Panhandle. For a bigger return, the Greek technique of diving for sponges was implemented. An influx of Greek immigrants to the area soon followed and the cultural identity of Tarpon Springs took root.

What was once a remote village became the “sponge capital of the world.” At one point, natural sea sponges retrieved from the Gulf surpassed citrus as Florida’s main export.

Sponges are still big business in Tarpon Springs and Greek heritage remains at the forefront. In fact, this community of just over 25,000 has the highest concentration of people of Greek descent than any other city in the nation.

On this episode, we take you to the sponge docks and beyond to show you the best things to do in Tarpon Springs.

Tarpon Springs Travel Guide | Sponge Docks + Anclote Key Florida | Exploring the Nature Coast | Ep.8

Join us on our 8th and final day of exploring the Nature Coast. On this day, we explore the famous sponge docks of Tarpon Springs plus the nearby Anclote Key.

We start our day by grabbing some delicious, authentic Greek coffee and pastries before hopping on a boat tour to Anclote Key. We were surprised to find the tour to be extremely educational and interesting, and we were amazed by the beauty of Anclote Key.

After returning to the mainland, we grab an amazing seafood lunch, do some exploring of the many sponge and soap shops, drop into a tiki bar and a brewery, and grab an amazing, authentic Greek dinner.

????Приятного просмотра!

Tarpon Springs Florida: The Best Greek Food At The Sponge Docks

Take a Greek food tour at the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs Florida.
The Greektown around Dodecanese Boulevard in Tarpon Springs Florida has many great Greek restaurants and bakeries. I head over to Mama's Greek Cuisine for some Souvlaki's and Pastitsio. If you are visiting Tampa or Clearwater Beach, take a short trip to Tarpon Springs Florida for the best Greek food in all of Florida. TOP things to do in Jackson Hole Wyoming

Exploring Jackson Hole Wyoming. Hello Everyone and welcome back to another adventure. This time we are in Jackson Hole Wyoming. We stayed at the Snake River Lodge located within Teton Village for 3 nights while we explored Grand Teton National Park. Come along as we take you on a tour of Jackson Hole as well as the awesome town of Jackson, Wyoming. This has to be one of the nicest cities we have ever visited. The lodging was fantastic, the food was delicious, and their local craft beers were on par with what we have here in the NW.

Jackson is a town in Wyoming's Jackson Hole valley, home to 3 ski areas: Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King Mountain Resort and Grand Targhee Resort. The Town Square features arches made of shed antlers from the nearby National Elk Refuge. The National Museum of Wildlife Art has works by Andy Warhol and Georgia O'Keeffe. North are the peaks of Grand Teton National Park, as well as vast Yellowstone National Park.

THE LAST OF THE OLD WEST – JACKSON HOLE
Jackson Hole is where pioneers sought new adventures.

With so many activities outside our door - like convenient day trips into Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks - today's traveler can explore on skis, mountain bikes, rafts, horse-drawn stagecoaches, and much more!

George Washington Memorial Park, commonly known as the Jackson Town Square, is the cultural, civic, and mercantile heart of the Town of Jackson. Dedicated as a park in 1934, the four main entrances at each of its corners are notably adorned with large arches made from elk antler sheds collected from the nearby National Elk Refuge. The first antler arch was built in 1953, and each arch is torn down and rebuilt periodically. The center of the park contains a stone memorial to famous mountain man explorer John Colter.

The park was named in order to memorialize George Washington for the 200th anniversary of his birth. The state of Wyoming, in cooperation with Congress, planned to honor the country's first president by establishing a George Washington Memorial Park in as many communities as possible.

Attractions
The Town Square is surrounded by local businesses of all kinds including restaurants, art galleries, and retail shops. During the summer months, people often enjoy a horse carriage ride around the park as well as the nightly Town Square Shootout performed by the Jackson Hole Playhouse at 6 p.m. (except Sundays).

Town Square Antler Arch Art Opens in new window
The Jackson Hole Historical Society & Museum guides a free walking tour of Jackson in the summer months beginning on the Town Square. Tuesday through Thursday at 10:30 a.m. you can join them as they point out many of the historic buildings surrounding the Town Square and discuss the wild characters and events of Jackson's past. In the Winter months, the Town Square is home to an ice skating rink, and Santa Claus makes his annual visit on the day after Thanksgiving at which time the trees and the arches are all lit up for the season. During all times of year the Town Square is a vibrant place of activity, hosting numerous fun and lively events of all varieties. Check the event calendar regularly to keep up to date on what's happening around town.

Florida surrendered to the U.S. by Spain, 200 years ago today in Pensacola.

The final surrender of Florida to the United States took place 200 years ago today on July 17, 1821. Pensacola marked the anniversary of the event with reenactments, living history, special events and more. @TwoEggTV, of course, was there!

The final surrendered followed the lowering of the flag of Spain at St. Augustine in East Florida one-week earlier, but it was not until Gov. Andrew Jackson witnessed the exchange of flags in Pensacola on July 17, 1821, that Florida's 308-year history as a European colony ended.

Learn more about today's events, the history behind them, and what they meant for the Seminole, Creek, and other Native Americans in Florida in this new in-depth story that combines history and news headlines.

The Man In Black Johnny Cash's Vacation Home, Port Richey, FL

Come Explore with Bo as we visit Johnny Cash's Vacation Home located at 5030 Sunset Blvd, Port Richey, FL 34668

Johnny Cash, forever remembered as the “Man in Black.”, once found relaxation here in this simple wood-frame house overlooking the Pithlachascotee River in Port Richey, FL.

Originally owned by his mother-in-law, country singing matriarch Maybelle Carter, Johnny and his wife, June Carter Cash, inherited the property in 1979. Fishing & relaxing was the order of the day when the Cashes were in town often fishing from Korman’s Marina.

Embracing his adopted town Johnny gave benefit concerts here back in the 1970’s. Johnny passed in 2003 but the house still hold’s traces of Johnny & June’s legacy. A two-sided fireplace bears Johnny’s name on one end, June’s name on the other.
