BASSANO DEL GRAPPA - Veneto | Italy

The town of Bassano-del-Grappa has very ancient origins, and we know it was inhabited in prehistoric times, as shown by archaeological finds and a protovillanovian necropolis (X-VIII century B.C.) discovered around St. George in Angarano.

Bassano was later conquered by the Romans, who called it Bossianus.

Around the 10th century a fortress was built that was later transformed into a castle, with some houses that developed around it - this was the first real core of 'modern' Bassano.

In early 1200 the famous 'Bridge of Bassano' was built.

In the Middle Ages and up until the 15th century, Bassano suffered from being the centre of many rivalries and was in turn defeated by many Italian Seignoiries: the Vicenza, the Scaligeri (Scala family from Verona), the Visconti from Milan and Padua all established their domination of Bassano at different times.

In early 1400 it was conquered by the Venetians, who ruled until the fall of the 'Serenissima'. The years of Venetian rule were, overall, prosperous for Bassano, which was embellished by numerous palaces and churches, and various manufacturing activities linked to the production of silk, ceramics and wool.

After 1600 the city entered a period of decline.

In the 18th century, following the  invasion of Italy by Napoleon, the city was ruled by the French, then after the fall of Napoleon by the Austrians (1814).

Finally, after the struggles of the Risorgimento, Bassano became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

What to see

The wooden Ponte Vecchio bridge, rebuilt several times, after being destroyed by high water and wars, but always according to Palladium’s original 1569 design. The bridge is well famous for a popular song of the Alpine troops in WW1 (Sul ponte di Bassano - là ci darem la mano. - Là ci darem la mano - ed un bacin d'amor...)

The majestic Sturm Palace, the patrician dwelling of the XVIII century, with interior stucco decorations and frescoes, now housed in the Ceramics Museum.

in the central Piazza Libertà, the statue of St. Bassiano and the church of San Giovanni Battista, with a richly decorated rococò chapel.

Castello Superiore, the first defensive fort that later became the citadel, in the higher part of the city.

The 10th century cathedral Pieve di Santa Maria, inside the fortress whose construction was started in 998.

The Parolini gardens, laid out by naturalist Alberto Parolini, with a wonderful variety of tropical plants.

Events

Between May and June: the “Biso & Verdiso” a feast celebrating the typical local white asparagus.

June: the “International Street Art Festival”

July and August: the “Opera Estate Festival Veneto” (Veneto Summer Opera Festival), with 400 performances including dance, theatre, jazz concerts, opera and films of cultural value, held in Bassano’s most fascinating spots.

In mid-September: every odd-numbered year: “La Ballata del Millennio” with more than 500 characters in costumes re-enacting the most significant moments of Bassano’s history.

About Bassano del Grappa:

Bassano del Grappa is a city and comune, in the Vicenza province, in the region of Veneto, in northern Italy. It bounds the communes of Cassola, Marostica, Solagna, Pove del Grappa, Romano d'Ezzelino, Campolongo sul Brenta, Conco, Rosà, Cartigliano and Nove. Some neighbourhoods of these communes have become in practice a part of the urban area of Bassano, so that the population of the whole conurbation totals around 70,000 people.

The city was founded in the 2nd century BC by a Roman called Bassianus, whence the name, as an agricultural estate. However, an ancient bronze sword (called spada di Riccardo), found in 2009 and dating back to the 7th century BC, possibly between the 18th and 15th century BC, suggests that the area of Bassano was already inhabited not just in the pre-Roman period, but possibly even in the pre-Venetic period, as confirmed by some artifacts found in a necropolis located in the neighbourhood of San Giorgio di Angarano.

The first news of the existence of the medieval city dates from 998, while the castle is mentioned first in 1150. In 1175 Bassano was conquered by Vicenza, but the city maintained a semi-autonomous status as a free comune in the 13th century also, when it was home to the family of the Ezzelini, who first unified the various territories of Veneto.

In 1278, according to Giovanni da Nono, Matteo of the Cortusi family of #padua / #padova  was elected podestà. In 1281, the city came under Paduan control. In 1368 Bassano was acquired by the Visconti of #milan and was given the status of separate land (terra separata).

In 1404, Bassano became a part of the Stato da Tera 'Mainland State' of the Venetian Republic, which granted the Bassanese district the status of autonomous podesteria, free and separate from whatever city and from the jurisdiction of whatever city (sit ipsa terra exempta et separata a quacumque civitate et iurisdictione cuiuscumque civitatis) and subordinate only to #venice / #venezia The autonomous district included Bassano properly and the villas of Cartigliano, Cismon and Primolano, Rossano, San Nazario, Pove, Solagna plus Cassola (on lands previously belonging to Pove and Solagna) and Tezze and Rosà (on lands previously part of Bassano). In addition to this, Valstagna and Campese (then belonging to Vicenza and the Seven Communes) and Romano and Mussolente (then belonging to Treviso) had strong commercial and political ties with the district as they were located very close to Bassano and its port on the river Brenta connected with #Venice. In 1760 Doge Francesco Loredan granted Bassano the title of City, subsequently retained under the Austrian and the Italian States. The Serenissima did not alter the town's magistratures, limiting itself to impose a Captain chosen by the Venetian Senate. The city became home to a flourishing industry producing wool, silk, iron and copper, and mainly for ceramics; in the 18th became especially famous in all Europe for the presence of the Remondini [it] printer company.

During the French Revolutionary Wars the city was the site of the Battle of Bassano. In 1815 it was included in the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia, and became part of the unified Kingdom of Italy in 1866. Napoleon Bonaparte remained in Bassano del Grappa for many months.

The original name of the town was Bassano Veneto. After the terrible battles on Mount Grappa in World War I, where thousands of soldiers died, a decision was made to change the name of the town. In 1928, the name was changed to Bassano del Grappa, meaning Bassano of Mount Grappa, as a memorial to the soldiers killed. Ernest Hemingway during his days as an ambulance driver in the war spent many days in Bassano and eventually settled there as part of A Farewell to Arms. Also other American writers spent some days in Bassano during World War I such as Scott Fitzgerald and Dos Passos.

During World War I Bassano was in the front area, and all industrial activities were halted.

In the last days of World War II, Bassano del Grappa was bombed by USAF B-24s and B-17s.

The symbol of the town is the covered Ponte Vecchio, which was designed by the architect Andrea Palladio in 1569. The wooden pontoon bridge was destroyed many times, the last time during World War II. The Alpine soldiers, Alpini, have always revered the wooden bridge and Bassano del Grappa. After the destruction of the bridge, they took up a private collection and had the bridge completely rebuilt. Soldiers often flock to the bridge to remember and sing songs from their days as alpine soldiers. The grappa shop of Nardini Distillery is located on the bridge, known as Ponte degli Alpini.

Bassano Del Grappa. Drone Video. 4K

???????? ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Drone footage of Ponte Vecchio in Bassano del Grappa.
Bassano plants its feet firmly straddling all the various passes of its history and thus creates a harmonious whole... The oldest traces of settlement here are datable to 3000 B.C.; then, after the Paleovenetians, the Romans settled here. In fact the town is named after the Roman family Bassia who possessed vast tracts of land.
Today the two periods which give the area is characteristic aspect are the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Bassano has always been a highly active mercantile centre. From the manufacture of textiles to the making of paper and ceramics, the town continues undaunted in its traditions, preserving the same care and attention at to its magnificent monuments.

Almost nothing has changed these days, as Bassano takes great pride in the worth of its heritage.

A stroll under the porticoes and through the lanes and squares leads us past Renaissance palaces and medieval churches. At the hub of everything lie the two squares, Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza della Libertà, with san Giovanni Battista and the loggia of the Comune which houses frescoes of the most important local artist: Jacopo da Ponte, known as Jacopo Bassano. Continuing past the 14th centruy church of San Francesco, we encounter the Palazzo Pretorio, the Remondini house (famous family of editors), and the Civic Museum which contains one of the best collections in the Veneto region, including examples of ancient Greek ceramics, and works by the da Ponte and Tiepolo families, Hayez and many more.

The main symbol of the town is however the Ponte Vecchio (also known as the Ponte degli Alpini), rebuilt many times but always remaining faithful to Palladio’s 16th century original.

Also meriting a visit are the 12th century fortress, the Duomo, and the many illustrious palaces, among which Ca’ Rezzonico, which demonstrates its Venetian provenance. Its elaborate decorations include touches by Canova. Its monumental architecture notwithstanding, let us not forget that Bassano is synonymous with the famous grappa, and to white asparagus, gastronomic delicacy of international renown.
