AFRICA - FROM GAMBIA TO DAKAR (FERRY) 4K

My solo travel to Dakar. Part I : Kololi - Banjul - Barra.
The Banjul to Barra Ferry Service is one of the Gambia capital's vital economic lifelines and an essential river crossing to Dakar (Senegal) the north bank wharf town of Barra Point in the Niumi District. The journey time from the terminal and across the mouth of the Gambia River estuary is about 35 minutes and services start from Banjul at 7 am and operate until 9 in the evening. Once you have paid and entered the departure terminal there is nothing in the way of refreshments and the toilet facilities leave a lot to be desired. So do be prepared. Keep your personal belonging close to you as there are pickpockets who specifically target ferry passengers. Should you wish to make the trip by pirogue then insist on being provided with a life jacket as this is a mandatory regulation. There are 3 boats in operation which are the 'Johe', 'Barra' and 'Kanilai' with departures taking place at intervals of every 30 minutes.

Top reasons to visit The Gambia, and not only ☀????

Why The Gambia?

And why not?

These are my favorite things to do in The Gambia!
Be amazed by these top places and experiences in The Gambia! iilluminaughtii

Think of long sandy beaches that are never overcrowded, a vibrant colorful culture, wonderful wildlife, and friendly English-speaking locals; there’s no end of reasons why you should consider a Gambia holiday.

The Gambia in West Africa is a fascinating place, and with no rain between November to the middle of June virtually guaranteed, and temperatures in the 30s, it is a fantastic winter sun destination. The coast has many lovely, long sandy beaches which are never over-crowded, even in the height of the season. And you’ll find it much cheaper than many other popular winter sun locations such as the Caribbean.

Are you visiting The Gambia for the first time? Here are some great things to do to ensure you get the most out of your holiday.

Take a bath in Sanyang Beach

There are many lovely sandy beaches in The Gambia, none of which ever get overcrowded and some with not another soul in sight. Sanyang, also known as Paradise Beach, is many people’s favorite....

Explore a Fishing Village

There are fish markets at Bakau, Tanji and Sanyang. These are colorful, vibrant places where you can watch the pirogues (fishing boats) come in and unload the day’s catch. ...

Don't miss a visit to Kunta Kinteh Island

Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly called James Island and St Andrew's Island, is an island in the Gambia River, 30 km from the Gambia River Barra. Fort James is located on the island. It is less than 3.2 km (2 miles) from Albreda on the river's northern bank.

Explore Banjul

A visit to The Gambia’s capital, Banjul, will add some history and culture to your African adventure.

Banjul is located on the island of Santa Maria, or Banjul Island, at the mouth of the Gambia River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The metropolitan area has about 460,000 inhabitants

Visit the Royal Albert Market and Serekunda market

Wind your way around the labyrinth of alleyways lined with ramshackle stalls as you explore the Royal Albert Market in The Gambia.

The tourist market selling clothes, jewelry, arts and crafts, is much like any other of the many markets dotted around the coastal tourist areas, aimed specifically at visitors to The Gambia.

Spend some days at Jynack Island

Jinack Island (also spelled Jinak or Ginak) is in the North Bank Region of the Lower Niumi District of The Gambia, in West Africa.

Get into Abuko Nature Reserve and Tanji Bird Reserve

Abuko Nature Reserve and Tanji Bird Reserve are located in the Kombo South District in the West Coast Region in the southwest coastal area of The Gambia in West Africa.

A walk along the beach at sunset

The sunsets in The Gambia can be spectacular. Being so near the equator the sun goes down very quickly around 7 pm (give or take half an hour).

Falling In Love In Banjul, Gambia ???????? You Won't Believe This! #Gambia,Africa Ep.6

Banjul is the capital city of the Gambia, a small West African country bordered by Senegal. The city sits on an island where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its colonial buildings include the National Museum, dedicated to Gambian culture and history. Vendors at the lively Albert Market sell colorful textiles and local produce. The city's main entrance is marked by the immense, columned Arch 22 gateway.

I am on a mission to visit 21 countries in 2021 telling the African story the African way. So far I have done 6 countries. 15 remaining.

Banjul in Gambia, capital, vacation destination and operator business market

Banjul is the second largest city in and capital of Gambia. The city is on an island, which has constrained its size - population is only 40,000. Consequently much of the population now is based on the mainland between the airport and the city. The main tourist and business centres are around Bakau, Fajara, Kotu and Serrekunda.
Banjul has become very popular as a package holiday destination with British and other European visitors. Travel company 'The Gambia Experience' has been the market leader, but other operators are increasing their offerings too.

Get in[edit]
Banjul International Airport also known as Yundum International (IATA: BJL, ICAO: GBYD) is the international airport of Banjul. There are many direct flights to Banjul from some parts of Europe and Africa. Direct flights to Conakry, Dakar, Freetown, Amsterdam, Lagos, Brussels, Bissau, London, Accra, Abidjan, Madrid, Barcelona etc. For the intrepid tourist, the Plymouth - Banjul Challenge [1] ends here as well.
From Senegal[edit]
Take a Sept-Place, a minivan or a bus to the border to Gambia. From the station you have to walk around one kilometer to the border officials. If you don't want to walk you can take a motorcycle or a donkey for a few cefa. after you passed the Senegalese and the Gambian border officials, you can take a shared taxi or minivan to Barra, cost around 30 Dalasi. From Barra take the Ferry to Banjul, for 25 Dalasi. The ferry takes around one hour. If you are coming from the Casamance region, you can take a Sept-Place to Banjul.
Get around[edit]
Most hotels will have a selection of green taxis, which have fixed prices to the most popular destinations. Bicycles are also available for rental. Car hire is available from Avis and AB, both of which are based at the SeneGambia Hotel. Car hire will cost about 1500 Dalasi/day for a small car.

THE GAMBIA: Crossing by ferry boat ⛴️ the mighty GAMBIA RIVER (AFRICA)

Gambia, Africa - crossing Gambia River by ferry, scenic views of ferry crossing of Gambia River. Let's travel to Africa and let's visit the capital of The Gambia, the city of Banjul. We are going to cross the Gambia River, we are going to take the ferry from Banjul (the Barra Ferry Service) which is one of the Gambia capital's vital economic lifelines and an essential river crossing to Dakar (Senegal). The Barra Ferry Service journey time from the terminal and across the mouth of the Gambia River estuary is about 35 minutes and services start from Banjul at 7am and operate until 9 in the evening.
The Gambia is a small West African country, bounded by Senegal, with a narrow Atlantic coastline. It's known for its diverse ecosystems around the central Gambia River. Abundant wildlife in its Kiang West National Park and Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve includes monkeys, leopards, hippos, hyenas and rare birds. The capital, Banjul, and nearby Serrekunda offer access to beaches.

Bakau, coastal city in The Gambia, hotels, Fajara, fisherman, market, bars, guesthouse

Bakau is a pleasant area in which to stay which is a little calmer than some of the more traditional tourist hotspots. There are still bumsters, however they are less aggressive and less frequent. There are some reasonable places to eat, a good variety of bars and plenty of places to buy crafts and produce.
Get in[edit]
It is uproad from Fajara, past the MRC. Take a yellow taxi from anywhere in the capital area and it should not cost you more than 100 dalasi, even from Banjul. Haggle hard.
You can also use the yellow taxis as shared taxi. Just tell them you don't want to have a town trip (privat taxi drive), then you will just pay 8 dalasi from Serrekunda or from traffic light. You can also use the small buses, just ask them where they're going, it will be a little bit slower than a taxi, but it will cost you 8 dalasi as well and you will travel like a local.
Get around[edit]
Yellow taxis are inexpensive if you know what you're doing, bush taxis (minibuses) are available also but you need to know how to navigate them. Bakau itself can be explored on foot and there are no areas where you cannot safely walk, although in the backstreets there is no street lighting so may not feel comfortable after dark.
See[edit][add listing]
There is a landing place and market for small boat fishermen, which is enjoyable to watch. This is more somewhere to stay and party in the evenings, the major attractions are in other areas.
Do[edit][add listing]
Mainly an entertainment area.
Buy[edit][add listing]
There is a craft market which is a good place to buy souvenirs if you want your money to go straight to the craftsman.
Eat[edit][add listing]
The best restaurant in the area, which also has outstanding views over the sea and fish market, is called something like the Fisherman's Rest (I forget the precise name) and is in the building which was once the house of the old colonial governor. It is comparatively expensive but good and not so touristy.
A cheaper but decent alternative is Saffie J's, especially for African dishes. between 175 and 250 dalasi for a main dish and 10 dalasi for a fish pie. Try the local tapalapa sandwiches for breakfast, they're selled everywhere on the street. You can find the best ones on the Kofi Annaan Road, opposite to the one world guesthouse. Try the one with potatoes. Between 15 and 20 Dalasi for a huge tapalapa baguette.
Drink[edit][add listing]
Bars here are plentiful. The locals will all try to get you to go to a place called Lama Lama, however I do not recommend it as it is very sleazy and not very good. If you want a place where you will not encounter bumsters, L.A. Live is a good option as the security keeps them out. Sinatra's often has good live music. If you want a heavy Reggae party, the Romana guesthouse has two big nights a week, dont go here until you are used to Gambia however. The last post, ie the bar open latest, is called Podium and located in the backstreets. I recommend you go here with a Gambian, it is worth buying a few drinks for him to have him lead you safely through the streets when you are drunk and to stop the other people in there hassling you for drinks. There are lots of other options, also lots of good places to watch English football. But I would avoid Lama Lama.
Sleep[edit][add listing]
The Romana guesthouse is cheap at 375 per night and is pretty good EXCEPT they have two big club nights per week where you will not sleep until 4 am (all other nights are quiet). If you are there to party, great, if you are staying there you are like the VIP. However, if you are the quiet type, do not stay here these nights.
One World Guesthouse, Kofi Annaan Road 10. 18€ for a double room with shared toilet. Very clean and a beautiful garden with a pool. Staff is nice and helpful. There are other guesthouses, all reasonable prices and quality.
Contact[edit]
A few honest people: Ali is an Egyptian who runs the Fisherman's restaurant mentioned above. Noah, the manager of the Romana will keep you safe and deal fairly with you if you stay there. Saffie, who runs Saffie J's, is an ex-soldier with a lot of influence, if you need someone to tell a bumster to go away he is your man.
Get out[edit]
The whole capital area is easily accessible, river trips can be arranged, you are not too far from the Barra ferry if you want to go up to Senegal.
