Barcelos is where Portugal's FAMOUS ROOSTER STORY comes from!

We've heard this weekly market in Barcelos, Portugal is the LARGEST ONE in Europe. Does it live up to its reputation? Plus, why are there so many roosters in Barcelos? This Portugal vlog has the answer!

Barcelos, Portugal is allegedly home to the largest market in Europe (Campo da Feira), taking place on Thursdays. We've been to a lot of markets in Europe; they're a great way to get to know the area that we're visiting. We travel by train from Braga in order to check out this one. It's massive!

While there, we can't help but notice all the rooster art that's spread throughout Barcelos. Barcelos' rooster is extremely well known, and we share an abbreviated version of the folk tale in this video.

We also have an incredible local lunch that we totally lucked into by walking to the other side of the river - to Barcelinhos.

Recommended eats:
Cantinho do Peregrino (bargain lunch):
Cafe Pastelaria Arantes (with amazing snack):

Walking Tour in Barcelos Historic Center.

As we cross the ancient bridge over the Cávado River, we enter one of the most iconic localities of Minho's folk art, Barcelos.

It is an ancient city, situated in a region with archaeological traces dating back to prehistoric times. However, it was in the 12th century that its history began. First, when D. Afonso Henriques granted it a charter, turning it into a town, and later when D. Dinis, in 1298, decided to reward his chief steward João Afonso by granting him the title of count and donating the settlement to him.

In 1385, the Constable Nuno Álvares Pereira became the 7th Count of Barcelos. He would give the town as a dowry in the marriage of his daughter D. Beatriz to D. Afonso, the illegitimate son of King D. João I. From that moment on, Barcelos experienced a period of great development and dynamism, reflected in the construction of the bridge, the wall (of which the Porta Nova Tower remains), the Paço dos Duques, and the Main Church. These monuments now constitute the historical center of the city, which maintains a pleasant medieval atmosphere, filled with manor houses and historic buildings such as Solar dos Pinheiros or Casa do Condestável.

A visit to Barcelos must include the ancient Praça da Feira, now Campo da República, where you can find the 18th-century Churches of Bom Jesus da Cruz and Nossa Senhora do Terço. This is where the country's largest handicraft fair takes place every Thursday. If you miss the weekly fair, be sure to visit the Pottery Museum and the Craft Center of Barcelos, where you can gain a good perspective on Minho's artistic expression. Among all the pieces produced here, the colorful Rooster of Barcelos is the most representative, not to mention the music bands and figures depicting the region's habits and customs.

Braga has the highest concentration of religious buildings in Portugal. At first, we thought they would be similar to other cities we've visited in Europe. We quickly learned that Braga's religious architecture was incredibly unique! Both the Cathedra of Braga and Bom Jesus du Monte had really unique elements that we haven't seen in other places in Europe (and trust us - we have visited a LOT of churches - they're nearly always free, so they're budget-friendly!). Bom Jesus du Monte has interesting history, too. Pilgrims used to go up to the chapel, climbing all the 577 stairs on their knees, as a tribute to the pain Jesus felt while being crucified. The sunset from on top of the hill was simply amazing.
